It's pretty much the only balanced multiplayer FPS in the world other than Halo.

This is why I like it.
Balance keeps it fun. People will complain about certain weapons, but that's because they themselves suck at the game. They complained about the Demoman's Shield and Sword because they were too stupid to react appropriately to it, for example.

And the way to act appropriately is to sidestep.
Or if your pyro then airblast/flame.

OT: Its an insanely balenced, hilarious, charming, unique, and just plain fun game.

Every class has a role to play. And everything has a counter.
Many games champion good multiplayer, Team Fortress 2 is one of the few to actually deliver. Plus it places emphasis more on teamwork than Kills/Deaths. Which is just fantastic.

Plus its actually supported years after launch with new maps/class updates/bugfixes/gameplay tweaks and whatnot. Well on the PC at least. Plus all the DLC is free.

Its not like most games where you get a few patches and maybe 2 DLC that you have to pay for right after release and thats that.

Not much to add other then going this. I wish I had bought the Orange Box when it first came out but I didn't figure TF2 and Portal were worth it...I was rather wrong in all regards.

This sums it up pretty well. It's a well balanced, humorous online multi player FPS.
There is so much content, both official and community made. Hell, I know dick-all about making games, but I still like to fool around in the Hammer editor and work on maps.

Simply class based objective based cartoony and humorously based 6-18 teams fighting it out with awesome funny as hell classes or characters.
Spy is french who thinks too much of him self.
Heavy is a russian dummy.
Soldier is american wannabe soldier.

Sniper is australian who loves piss.
Pyro is a pyromaniac.

And that's the strangest thing: very, very few people in TF2 are mic-spamming assholes. It's really, really surreal. You're playing a game with tons of potentially foul-mouthed teenagers, but most of the time they act civillized. I have not seen this phenomenon happen with any other FPS.

Cannot stress this enough. I'm at something like 400 hours played and I might have only seen that happen once. The community makes this game, everything else just makes it better.

It is to the Team Fortress series what Plants vs Zombies is to RTSes. This isn't really a bad thing, it's pretty damn fun and easy to pick up, however at times it can be pretty slow. For best results, bring friends and communicate with your team.

Oh, and the backstory is fantastic and the game has a brilliant sense of humour. I would actually say this game is a lot funnier than Portal.

However, gameplay wise, I think Unreal Fortress is better.
