Hardcore FFA on Nuketown?
Haha. As if it wasn't a clusterfuck enough with only ten players.
Did it on PC with 18-people, since it switched from TDM to FFA.

Was fucking awesome

Are our attention spans this short that we forget that there are two other FPS's that broke that barrier YEARS ago? Before SOE killed it, Planet Side was doing a few times that number! Battleground Europe pulls 5x that number on a daily basis.

^What he said, although i thought the cont. cap was either 300 or 600, can't remeber which. Still that's extremely impressive by today's standards, imagine back in 2003. Planetside: One of the best damn games ever made. Ever. Of all time. (IMHO) Until SOE Screwed it up, and their screw up was the worst screw up. ever. of all time.(not really but was still kind of dumb on their part) Still a good game now though! Back in the day was the coolest thing ever, the adreneline of fighting a large scale war with bombers, fighters, tanks, buggies, Armored buses, Power armor, cloaked med stations, all the different certifications, making good friends in a friendly outfit, being in an outfit that did training once a week, OH MY GOD! Never have I had such an epic experience since that game. Planetside 2 will hopefully be even better, and become the best damn game ever made!

I'm probably not getting the point of this, but what about MMOs like World of Warcraft or Runescape? At least in specific servers, don't they have upwards of thousands of people on at once? What makes this one special?

On a single server yes, but that server is split into all the different zones and instances. This on the other hand will be all one persistent battlefield. Imagine the entire server full of people in an MMO in one place, it tends to crash the servers. (WAR was able to do this at launch, but if all players gathered in one area for big fights the server lagged and died, so they put a cap and when it was reached, it spawned a second instance. These times were rare, but in peak times, somewhat annoying.)

But as other have said, games like Planetside and other large scale FPS games have had pretty damned large games, with much MUCH better graphics/gameplay!

This has already been done with the same technology they described. Darkfall Online. Look it up. FPS, check. Over 1000 people online at the same time, easily been done many times over. Hell go look at some of the videos on youtube and you can see for yourself that it has been done. I hate it when someone tries to claim a first by just copying someone else who has already done it.
And I hate people assuming any idea like this is 'stolen'.

Granted, if someone got there first, then their 'record' attempt is meaningless, but not every cool idea a person gets is automatically a stolen thought just because someone else has already done it.

It is actually possible to come up with the same idea independently you know.
And what's more, if it involves technical constraints, it's even quite likely that any solution to actually make such an idea possible is going to look rather similar.

Imagine how you'd feel like if you come up with a cool new idea, go through the hassle of creating a working implementation, then someone accuses you of 'stealing' the idea because some other group you've never even heard of got to it first?

Not that we can tell, as outsiders if any given idea was devised independently, or copied from elsewhere somehow...

This. is. NUTS!
In a good way.
They should probably disable air strikes or the re-spawning will put the server in a comma.
THIS IS SPARTA!!!!!
Also, 1000 people is totally insane- besides which, when playing against a major online server they'd be lucky to get enough people for 10 games
