OK, getting back to the topic of, "Why are computer geeks and computer nerds turning into bare nuckle brawlers?"

I think their are a few reasons.

The first is unpleasing stereo typing, As a kid I was a nerd, in jr. high I was a nerd and hating it, in high school, I was a geek who played LeCross. Many Nerds probably got fed up with being the root of ever joke, and (Like me) fixed the unsocial aspect of what they where doing, by making them selves like the cooler kids but smart.

The second, and much more likely I think, is the Xbox Generation. If you unconditional like halo without having played half life, or Unreal Tournament you probably fit in this group. People who where and/or are members of The Legion of Stupid, decided to start playing games. and the two games that lured them over where Grand Theft Auto (no surprise) and Halo. What's odd about Halo is it shouldn't have been as massively popular as it is. I was a fan of Marathon, and because of that fact was mildly excited for Halo, because it was essentially Marathon 3... sort of. Then it became massively popular, and everyone somehow gets the gall to call it the best game ever.

so either nerds got brawny, or stupids got halo. Well I know why guess is on, and as a brawn-ifyed nerd I'll tell you i doubt its number 1.

Strictly speaking, current-day psychologists are under the impression that you don't work out your rage by expressing it. On the contrary, it seems many emotions which are expressed regularly become stronger. So, in terms of using fight clubs to "work out their rage" it actually doesn't work that way. When psychologists counteract repression, it's usually something else entirely.

I figure these tech fight clubs are harmless so long as these guys are just doing this in the spirit of having fun and letting off steam by being goofy. If they're doing it because they want to prove they can be angry, that's a road to ruin.
Dead on. Everybody go back and watch the movie Fight Club. It wasn't just a gimmick that he was fighting himself. The point was that instead of dealing with his inner demons, he'd just unleashed them and instead of going away, they'd hijacked his entire life.

I have no problem with organized brawling with referees and rules and everything. It's a release to watch it, just like it is to play violence in a game. But anyone, nerd or biker, going out and beating the crap out of someone - or letting it happen to them - because it feels good? That isn't a hobby or therapy. It's immature and dangerous.

Yes, we have the potential to be growling cavemen. But look around. We're not growling cavemen anymore, and for good reason. Feeling pain and/or causing it may feel good for whatever reason, but it isn't healthy behavior.

Take it from a recovering cutter. What starts as release becomes addiction, and addiction is never funny or relaxing.

(EDIT: I know they're hitting each other with keyboards covered with pads. But I've also seen people backyard brawl with barbed wire and nail boards. Is there really a world of difference?)

They fight in a friendly atmosphere, they have head protection, they beat each other with keyboards - not exactly the most lethal weapon in the world - looks like pretty much innocent fun to me.

I think that some amount of physical fighting in a controlled environment (and, more importantly, with the right attitude) is a healthy way of listening to our instincts. Because yeah, the thirst for physical conflict can lurk in many of us and you can either pretend it doesn't exist and have it explode someday, or try to control it. Modern sports give plenty opportunities to do so.

The first rule of tech fight club, you do not talk about tech fight club!

Honestly though this is the silliest thing I've heard in a long time, fighting for the sake of fighting is pointless atleast with boxing you can justify it because it's a sport.
It's a guy thing. Inside every male, no matter how deeply-seated, genetically, there is the need to beat your chest and fight others. It's part of an old survival habit, in which the strongest of the males would become alpha male, back when we all lived in small tribes, and that sort of thing was essential to survival, protecting others and hunting stuff, etc. But like it or not, we have to live with our genes, and there's soemthing primal and cathartic about beating somebody else in a fight, especially if it's organised, and there's understanding between the fighters that it's just a fight for the sake of it.
Imagine then, what happens when men are now told that men aren't the only ones who can provide and protect families, that women can do it too. What have men got left? Muscle, aggression and libido. So unfortunately, that's what a lot of them cling to, in the face of having nothing left to determine their masculinity. Others turn metro, and that's a whole other story.

Ad there you've come across another manly issue...most guys are no good with tools, yet everybody expects them to be! It's a great blow to masculine pride when we have to bring in another man to fix things for us as he stands there expertly quoting technical jargon at us, whilst we smile and nod, knowing that this guy was doing DIY before he could walk, whilst we've never done anything like this in our lives, and it's scary!

We fight with more than just keyboards.
dulled Knives, toilet seats, plungers, Kendo sticks, Eskrima Sticks, weighted hand bags, extension cords, and pretty much anything else that one can hold in their hands ans strike another with.

I briefly wondered how much of this is caused by G4 airing Fight Club so much. Then, I remembered that even nerds don't watch G4.
