Well, today I booted my desktop PC and I got a funky little message saying "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key". So, I reboot, go into my BIOS, look at the Boot Order drop-down menu... and the only things available are Floppy Disk and Disable. Obviously, I want to boot from my hard drive, which is where Windows is. I'd assume it'd be there, but it's not.

Did my HD get fried? If not, how do I fix this? Is it salvageable?

Open the case, plug the hard drive in and out. Make sure you check the power and SATA/IDE wires at both ends.

Also, if you're not experieced with this kind of stuff, be careful not to touch anything you shouldn't.

Oh, before you try anything else, you should try spamming F8 while it's loading up. See if you can boot that way.

F8 didn't work

You also might want to try doing what it says.. booting from the floppy, and then taking a look around to see if it can locate the hard drive that way.
Thing is, booting from the floppy is what it's been trying to do (to no avail, since there are no floppy disks anywhere in my hosue).

Turning it off and back on didn't work the first 3 times, but a stubborn fourth try made it boot OK. I'll try rebooting again after my dad's done using it.

Have you been getting the BSOD lately? if you have that would indicate that your hard drive is wearing out.
Also if you are able to get it up from time to time what you may want to do if you have a CD burner is download a live cd of some sort of OS, its not hard to get a live disc of Ubuntu linux, for instance, or even just gparted.
A quick google for any of these things will take you to a place you can download the image file for it, burn that to a cd and boot from that next time it does this. At least you'll have some functionality that way until you can get this fixed, and having an os to boot from helps with troubleshooting.

other than that, maybe you've just got a dodgy cable connecting your hard drive, try another if theres one in the case, there usually is.
