The thread you were in was a hypothetical one. This teenager was actually saying that he was going to do it. There is a difference between a hypothetical discussion and hearing someone say they are going to commit a school shooting.UtopiaV1 said:samsonguy920 said:If it was the government monitoring LIVE that then arrested the boy, and then probably the man for not saying anything about it on his own, then you would be right. It is a part of a person's civic duty to follow up when they are witness to a crime that is happening or is in the process of. I am curious when down the road a crime is committed against you or someone close to you, and you find out later that someone could have stepped up and said something that would have prevented the crime from being committed, if you would forgive that witness since they didn't play the part of an "Orwellian stooge." Ask yourself that.
And civic duty doesn't mean it falls under law, and to that end I would prefer it stayed. States and communities that have a Good Samaritan law are seriously being overreactionary. People shouldn't feel compelled under the law to report a crime, but instead should feel it to be their part of the community that they live in.
The man did his civic duty, and for that I applaud him. You're missing the point. He couldn't and didn't commit any crime whatsoever. And was still arrested and held in custody on BS "word of mouth" charges.gof22 said:What if the student actually meant it though and the other gamer did not report him? What if the shooting did happen and people were killed?
How would you feel about if it did happen?
A month or two ago, there was a thread about how you would assassinate the US president. I said that I was going to do it, giving a specific time, location, and details on how I was to kill him.
Of course I didn't do it. We all know that. I was making a point, not actually planning an assassination. (the point - no one in that thread should be arrested for hypothetical musings... much like this thread really)
So no more 'what ifs', alright? Police are supposed to operate on 'just the facts', and in this case, the facts pointed to zilch. About that, there can be no dispute.
Yeah, people get way too irate on it. Some kid threatened to "Rape and pillage" my family because I kept killing him on domination on MW2. (His fault for standing in the open at the flag)The DSM said:Wow, if the police take X box threats seriously, it must be a slow day.

I have had 1337 people threaten to kill me and as far as I know it hasnt happened.
Well that's not true. There is no reason why this kid couldn't have been serious. It's better to be safe than sorry, and I applaud the fellow who alerted the authorities. Think of all the school shootings, suicides or murders that could have been prevented if someone would have done this. It's way too easy to pass something off, saying "Bah! He is just bluffing!".The DSM said:Wow, if the police take X box threats seriously, it must be a slow day.

Only way this article could be better. Good on that person. That kid needed to have a good slap of reality.Austin MacKenzie said:A man living in Port Alberni, British Columbia happened to be playing Call of Duty 2: Modern Warfare over Xbox Live when he heard a shocking admission. His fellow player was failing school; he had drawn up a hit list and made detailed plans for a school shooting he would carry out the next day. The man, disturbed by the admission, questioned the player further but the conversation ended abruptly. He immediately contacted Royal Canadian Mounted Police, who in turn launchedan investigationa missile.
exactly. school shootings are happening all to often lately. just this morning there was another shooting in a near by college just 2 years after the last shooting. NIU for anyone that cares. people need to chillax and kudos to the police for actually doing something.Onyx Oblivion said:They killed you in your sleep. OT: Well, you made the threat, you do the time. Serious or not, you can never be too sure.
