Tekken Characters May Not Join Smash Bros. Cast

Tekken's producer reckons his series' cast might not appeal to Smash Bros. fans.

Since Namco Bandai is co-developing the currently untitled Super Smash Bros. installment for Wii U and 3DS, it's a given that a few of the developer/publisher's more notable characters might make it into the game. The elephant in the room is whether or not Namco will allow characters from Tekken to appear in a rival fighting game. Tekken producer, Katsuhiro Harada, doesn't seem too keen on the idea.

"The fans, rather than asking about Tales or Gundam or some of our other franchises, the fans abroad saw Tekken as one of the key words and took off on that," he told NowGamer. "We're not really sure at this moment but when thinking of the player base who is playing Smash Bros., maybe Tekken characters is something they wouldn't want, so I've been pulling back on that a bit. But I don't know."

Harada perhaps has a point, Smash Bros. has traditionally pulled characters from non-fighting games, which to me, seems to be part of the appeal. To make things more awkward, Tekken mainstay, Heihachi Mishima, has been confirmed to appear in Sony's take on the all-star brawler formula, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale.

Harada called the upcoming Smash Bros. game a "big priority" for Namco-Bandai, and that the company has "a lot of people" from its numerous franchises working on the project.

Perhaps Harada is hesitant to put Tekken characters in the game because he's afraid they might be ... Tekken for granted.

I'll show myself out.

I love Tekken, but I agree, I don't think they're appropriate in the game. Not because of the violence or anything, but the non-fighting game character appeal Carter mentioned.

Still, it'll be nice to have a company that can make good, balanced fighting games making a Smash Brothers.

Lets get the wolf from Vesperia.

He wields a sword and smokes a pipe.

I rest my case.

Just a thought: Maybe they would consider it if the new Tekken for the Wii U turns out to be a unprecedented success. Or at least a moderate one. :)

Aw man a character or two from Tales of Symphonia would be awesome. It was a Gamecube exclusive release at first (although later ported to PS2 in Japan) so it would make the most sense to pick a character from.

Lloyd and Kratos would be the most logical choices IMO...

Yes, yes and yes!

OT: Couldn't we have Gon? I know he was a guest character in Tekken 3 and is from a Manga, but could we still have him in SSB? I mean, he should fit better and be more appealing to the original cast style!

And Lloyd, fucking badass with dual-swords.

OT: ye, Tekken characters don't fit in the Smash Bro games, imo. I don't really know why, just doesn't feel right, I guess.

Yeah, I don't think many of the Tekken characters would make a good fit in SSB, aside from maybe one of the animals, or Gon (and even then . . . meh). Although if the next game also has assist trophies, they might work well in there.

Oh, and on that note, what about Katamari Damacy? That would be awesome. Or one of the Point Blank guys. They'd make good assists. Maybe not characters.

I like Tekken and I love Super Smash Bros., but I cannot imagine these two things being incorporated into the same videogame unless your objective was to make a bad videogame.

It'd be like someone making another Shrek sequel and having Al Pacino make a cameo.

Lloyd would fit very well in Smash Bros. Artes would work well for special moves. I can already imagine Demon Fang being the default B move.
Tekken characters, only if they're assist trophies.

If ANY Tekken (let alone Namco) character get added to the roster, for each character added that is not from a Nintendo game the Fans WILL ***** harder at a character slot that could be used for a Nintendo character that was NOT included!

There's no good way to approach it since SSB is Strictly for 1st party game characters, its bad enough that they will be unable to include everyone's favorite character in the next game.

Why fucking Tekken? What Tekken game was on the Wii? (I know there was one on the 3DS) Come on, ad Travis Touchdown at least he was on a Nintendo platform and is loved by everyone who played No More Heroes. While yer at it, add Raichu (Why not, Pikachu is in it and Pichu was in it, why not Raichu, he is quite popular among Pokemon fans)
No more character copies!! Christ I'm sick of those enough as it is, we don't need more!

Shame we'll never see Banjo or Kazooie in a Smash Bros game.
