In all my years of gaming, fighters have been one of the genres that I've always enjoyed, and Tekken was never an exception... that is until the PS2 days. During it's hay-day on the PSX, I enjoyed the first three games quite a lot, but after a while it just started feeling stale. Here I am 4 games later and it feels like I'm still playing the first game but with better graphics. Characters seemed to have little variety (compared to the likes of Soul Calibur or Virtua Fighter where each character is like learning a completely different game), and it was hard to get into it enough to know whether or not the developers put any balance into it.

So I have to ask, now that it's upto what I believe is the 5th installment, what is Tekken's appeal these days? For those who are still playing the game: What keeps you coming back?

You can play as a wrestler wearing a jaguar mask.
What? I thought he had a real jaguar head!
Thanks for destroying the one good childhood memory I have of that game <_<

It's actually 7th

Tekken
Tekken 2
Tekken 3
Tekken Tag Tournament (some bastardization of Tekken so the PS2 would have a Tekken tittle)
Tekken 4
Tekken 5
Tekken Dark Resurrection

And Tekken 6 should be on it's way.

Why do I keep playing Tekken... Beats me tbh... I like playing it with friends, but It's kinda hard to mobilize enough friends over to your house to have a "Tekken party"... And when I do I have the slight problem of beating them all without sweating... Which kinda cuts down the fun of it...

Nope, mask. In the intro for one of the first three games it shows the mask sitting on a dresser, and then he puts it on.

Ah yes, as Yahtzee would put it, they subscribe to the "Resident Evil" school of sequel numbering. I stopped following the series after T4, but I know I've seen Tekken 5 machines around.

As for your second comment, that's kinda when I have the most fun with fighting games. It's not as fun when you just stomp the other guy into the ground, because then you don't know if you're learning anything. It's when the other guy knows that he's doing that you kinda learn how to dodge and weave and which attacks are better to use when. If the other guy is a complete moron though, you can beat him spamming the same move. :/

It's the ultimate drunk Bro game. Soul Calibur etc is close but Tekken got there first and has been ripping the face off of competitors for years and probably will continue to.

Woah, nobody knock tekken tag tournament! Thay may well be my favourite game in the series! Large number of characters, good multiplayer modes, fun with character combos.

I don't know if tekken is 'hyped' as such. It's pretty much what it's saying it is. It's a solid fighting game - very solid. It's a bit slower than other fighting games which means that there is a lot more opportunity to gain skill - button bashers get *crushed* against experts. It's very pretty. The move lists are just the right length... All up? A solid, high skill, well made fighting game.

beleive it or not, tekken is the best fighting game, its purely fist fighting....well more or less is you leave out yoshimistsu, but the graphics are good, the characters are well done, no steryotyping, the story line well... its a story line. THe main thing is the game presents itself amazingly, when you watch advertisements it glorifies the game to well, and the Tekken players are very loyal to their game it wont take much to win them back or keep them buying the games

The guttural feeling I get when playing it simply has yet to be matched. Being able to slam someone onto the ground, then have them skyrocket 20 feet in the air, hit the ground, then stomp them again on the rebound...I mean dude, that's awesome. The combos are like a sandbox.

I saw those too...

... I'm hoping they're just visual effects... But to be honest a lot of things in T6 did leave me worried.

6 is going to be amazing hands down. The weapons usage in the trailers look like a welcome, if slightly one-sided, gameplay element. The lead-in animations looked long, which leads me to assume that they'll be easy to dodge. It looks like they're using these moves as punctuation marks after landing a combo.

To you maybe... I want weapons on my Tekken like I want to be bludgeoned in the face with a crowbar.

But see that's the thing - I only think they're going to be used like, say grapples for example. Something you can counter. Which is kinda cool.
