Pockies are kinda terrible. Like low-grade hershey's "chocolate" dipped on a pretzel stick. Mikado is the same as Pocky however it uses real chocolate instead of "chocolate".
Not once in Japan did I ever see a "Mikado". But yeah, Pocky isn't anything special. I like it when I expect I will need a snack throughout the day but don't want to eat a lot at any one time. Pocky is easy to pack, and easy to eat a couple sticks and then put away.
Isn't Mikado just the western re-branding of the Japanese product Pocky, this would explain why you wouldn't find "Mikado" in Japan.

Because people all across the world enjoy different tastes it is highly possible that Glico decided to change the chocolate formula of Mikado in order to match the taste of westerners. Most Japanese people find western chocolate and sweets to be too sweet compared to native chocolate.

As for awesome stuff from Japan, compared to where I live I could name several things but I'll just stick with one thing for now; heated toilet seats with built in music, bidet's and other gadgets.

And one more thing; the public transport system, especially the metro and train system. Compared to the public transport system here in the Netherlands, the Japanese version is godlike.

I guess I have to show you the most disturbing children's song that me and a friend saw when we were in Japan this summer.

Yeah... there's so much wrong with song I don't even know where to begin. It was pretty awesome though, we got up pretty early in the morning every weekday we were there to watch it.

I have heard enough to know that trains in the UK are not more convenient than trains in Japan.
Oh my friend you couldn't be more correct. When you get rush hour delays due to 'adverse weather conditions' (the adverse weather being rainy...in a country where it rains 70% of the time), you know there are problems. Yes in London it's nice that trains and underground services can get you to most places, but it certainly ain't quick.

Riding a high speed Shinkansen is one of the biggest draws for Japan in my eyes, it makes the travelling a highlight of the trip.

That's just the regular flavor, though. There are tons of others.
I know, I've tried them. They're inferior and the only reason I could give for someone preferring them to Mikado is for the weaboo factor. Most of the flavours of pocky are available in actual form with Mikado. There are even some good ones like Da'im which you might have tried if you've been to an IKEA.

Hell even at their best Pocky as a concept aren't even that good.
SOmething just struck me... Was the Pocky you've tried from Japan or Thailand?
