It spikes to let you know you're body is satiated when you're eating. Obese people often have developed a resistance to it, i.e. it no longer singles to your body you are full, much like people with adult onset diabetes and insulin (there is a lot of overlap too -- people who are overweight and diabetic will have resistances to both signaling hormones thought to be caused by chronic exposure of these hormones to their receptors).
I'm a research tech and most people are unaware of this - at least people in my circle of friends who don't work in !SCIENCE!
