I don't care if it's not out yet it's still the only game I will spend way too much time on

Vanquish or Bayonetta.

Action games at their purest. Just you, a bunch of enemies, and your own skill. And a threadbare narrative just there to set it all up and show you cool shit.

I played Vanquish at least 4 times in a row, though. Bayonetta was on-again, off-again over the course of a few weeks.

So, I guess Vanquish.

I'm sick of the hearing people on the Escapist keep going on and on about narrative and immersion. You can keep your Mass Effect 2s and your Red Dead Redemptions and your New Vegases. The inevitable favorites of this topic.

Give me more crazy shit!

Although New Vegas has it's share of crazy shit (Animal Husbandry Farm, anyone?)...It's core gunplay and leveling systems are severely flawed and lacking.
Is Vanquish really that good? Cause I was considering getting it but wasn't sure if it justified the full $60 american.

Mass Effect 2, easily.

Followed by RDR.

If New Vegas had actually worked, it would have been that. But alas, way too broken.

my favorite games:
Crackdown 2
Mass Effect 2
Prototype (not this year, but i first played it this year)
Saints Row 2 (same as Prototype)
Just Cause 2
Fable 3

My game of the year:
Mass Effect 2 - only game that made me laugh, cry, and go "FUCK YEAH!" whenever i accomplished something

Mass effect 2.

Awesome story, Lovable characters, RPG leveling, fast and furious combat.
But top of it all, Biotic powerrrrrs.

Oh and before I forget!

I'd first answer Pokémon Soulsilver, but since it's a remake, I won't.
My second place choice would be the Sly Cooper Collection, but that's just a re-release.
So it's a tie between Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep and God of War 3.

Halo: Reach. It pleased in all aspects and was as good as all the critics (that matter) said it was. Didn't quite live up to the hype, but the hype was so ridiculous I didn't expect it to. Nothing could have.

Following that, Mass Effect 2. Great characters are the game's main strength. I do wish the brilliant Mako was still there though, screw the Planet Scanning mechanic.

Other than that, though, the only thing that holds it back is the combat, which works and is quite fun sometimes but pales in comparison to stuff dedicated to combat like Reach.

Those are the only two games I've played this year... :/

Bayonetta.
Loved it.
I love Bayonetta too, but it came out in 2009, not 2010.
Unless I've misunderstood the thread which is about the best game you played this year, regardless of release date, in which case I apologize.

edit: It's been pointed out to me that I was wrong and it came out at the veeerrry start of January, so my apologies :)
It came out in early January, so it counts, doesn't it?

Rock Band 3!

No, wait! Let me explain!

Every year in the UK we've had a numbered edition of the Rock Band series, and every year I've absolutely loved it. But every year, another game has come out that has just narrowly beaten it (2008: Saint's Row 2, 2009: Uncharted 2). But in 2010, nothing has come close to it. Rock Band has almost been perfected (the "find online players" system is, in my mind, a step back compared to the one in RB2) and I've been loving every single second of it. Plus, I held my first Rock Band party this year and had the most fun I've ever had with any game since 2005 (my first Buzz! all-nighter if you must know).

So, yeah. Call me bias. I don't give a shit. It's my number 1. Followed closely behind by Heavy Rain (despite its faults, I still love the hell out of it).

New Vegas or maybe Halo: Reach. I've had so much fun with them. I'm putting down Tron: Evolution even though it's not released yet. It looks like pure, unadulterated awesome.

There was nothing better than rampaging and slaughtering not only most of the mythical Greek beasts, but also the entire Greek pantheon in glorious HD on the PS3.

For that, God of War III gets my Game of the Year award.

I generally judge GOTY based on whether I actually felt compelled to finish it.
And according to that criterion, the closest thing I have to a GOTY is Minecraft.

So thereby hangs my choice.

There other games that i liked but it just seem to me that only Mass Effect delivered the full experience this year.
