Tera vs. Guild Wars 2

Okay, apparently this question has been asked all across the internet, judging from my Google searches. But, still, I value the opinions of this community, and I think there's quite a few people who can give a good answer. If not, then just give be funny ...

A few of my friends are playing Tera, and praising it to high heaven. They say the combat is the best they have ever experienced in an MMORPG, and are suggesting I get it. Meanwhile, I've retorted that GW2 looks amazing and that I'm actually rather excited for that - especially the fact there is no subscription fee. My friend has said that will only mean very few updates, and that you'll be paying for expansions at a later date - also, will I get my upfront money's worth? However, I haven't been interested in GW2 for long enough to actually pre-order and play the Beta weekend(s?), so my argument is purely conjecture.

I can see both sides: Tera's fantastic combat vs. GW2's great questing, subscription vs. buy-to-play etc.

Now, what's your opinion on them both? Which is better? Which have you played/are going to play?

I've only played GW2.

I'd be lying if I didn't admit that Tera's pre-teens in panties art style made me more than a little uncomfortable.

I haven't played GW2. However, Tera's combat is really really fun. Yeah, the scantily clad prepubescent girls is a little off putting. Also, after Star Wars I just cannot be bothered to read quests so I have no idea what's going on in the game.

I'm going to have to say GW2, despite the lack of loli-furries :p.
From what I hear, Terra is a good combat system squandered on an outdated world design.

GW2 has overhauled everything in MMOs.

Well, yes and no. They've tweaked enough that it feels relatively "fresh" and different, but they've not re-invented the wheel here. If EQ was version 1.0, and WoW and it's army of cheerful imitations was version 1.2, this is version 1.5 or 1.6, not version 2.0.

Tera is super Pedo-bear mode with what's supposed to be some amazing combat.
GW2 looks to have similar combat, but with fewer prepubescent little girls in tini-bikinies.

I'll probably try them both.
I'll just have to hope Chris Hansen doesn't show up while I try Tera. <_< (I say in her bio she's 87 man! what's the problem here?)

TERA's just another Korean grindfest. The questing is as boring as you can get in an MMO, I played up to lv25 in the closed Beta and all of the quests were kill counters. I remember watching a video where TotalBiscuit was playing TERA with a dev and the dev actually said "who even reads the quest logs, right?" Durr. The combat is completely overrated also, it may as well use a targeting system like that of other MMOs because you don't need to aim the reticule in TERA at all, it doesn't feel all that actioney either when you're incapable of moving whilst attacking and there's a pause after every attack.

In terms of actual PvE content it's not bad, BAMs are pretty fun to fight against but everything else is forgettable and all the good shit is end game, which as already mentioned requires the completion of quests that make me want to stab myself in the prostate. The PvP is laughable too, everything revolves around gear which, like Aion, seems to attract the worst kind of MMO player that confuses the ability to put up with poor game mechanics with 'hardcore'. Also, as mentioned above, the art style is fucked. I've said it another thread, but during character creation your options are limited to picking either a prostitute, a gay pornstar, or a loli.

As for GW2, I'm bias because I still play GW1 and have been waiting for GW2 for years and love what I played in the Beta. The world is amazing and quests vary hugely, the levelling process itself is also end-game when you consider that you're scaled down to match the area's content, so lv30 content stays relevant and difficult at lv80, even more so when you consider the low gear cap and focus on gear difference through aesthetics and not stats. You can be boosted in one click to lv80 for structured PvP, so you don't have to force yourself to PvE to play what you want. The combat is so much more fluid than TERA and I feel plays much like a MOBA. TERA just doesn't compare at all for me.

As for the whole buy-to-play thing, GW2's team is splitting into two at launch with one focusing on creating more content and the other on refining current content. The cash shop will only be used for cosmetic items or boosts like GW1 and content will probably roll in quick, the first expansion (although they're considered standalone games) for GW1 came a year after its release, with the next coming 6 months later.

Tera's combat from what I've heard relies on movement and preemptive healing (blocking and dodging.) GW2 does the same thing, but with no trinity and self sufficient professions.

Tera has a $15(month)-$9(year) (prices shown by monthly cost) subscription fee on top of $40 game. So the game +3 months (I'm assuming are free) is $40. GW2 is $60. Every month after makes Tera cost closer to $12-$9 dollars. So 1 year +3 free months cost minimum $147-$159. GW2 for box and expansion (assuming within a year) $120.

Also, better quests/events in GW2 so that's where my money's going.

(Scantly-clad loli race is a turn off.)

You can dodge while attacking. I do it all the time on my slayer.

Aman, Baraka and Popori are nothing like that.

Your bias clearly shows.

Honestly, I don't care how many races AREN'T sexualized little girls. ONE race of sexualized little girls is one race too many, for fucks sake.

It's a curious defense is all.

Sure this game features pedophilia! But it also features OTHER THINGS! Like anthropomorphic raccoons! And fun combat!

Like, how much pedophilia is too much? How much spoils your game? 10% pedophilia? 20%?

I like to make my MMO characters up as skimpy highly sexualised women. Yes I said women. Women. I like women. I mean females that have passed puberty.

So yeah, I'm going for GW2.

GW2 combat follows MMO standard pretty much though with like bloated said, enough tweaks to keep me from thinking I've played this game before. But then again it was only 1 beta weekend and I felt the same way about TOR. Fortunately with the public quests which i loved about Warhammer online and the streamlined skill system that means people will have different load outs rather then just be carbon copies with the only difference being which of the 50 skills they use first.

Sorry, still bitter about WoWs influence on rift and Tor..... So much potential but fear of trying something new dragged them under.

Anyways, I like the idea of Teras combat though I haven't tried it yet, the pedolicious furries make me too uncomfortable, In the words of yahtzee, "I know somewhere someone is getting off to this, but its certainly not me".

GW2 meanwhile, I was not wowed with the 2 days i played, the lag, bugs and stuttering affected my enjoyment and while I know it will probably be fixed, I have have to use it to judge it now. In addition it seemed too easy to suddenly die and then trying to figure out how to win at that mini game type thing was horrible, These are problem that could of been alleviated if there was anything to explain game mechanics, I like figuring out things for myself, like skillchains in FFXI, but I don't like getting blindsided by mandatory things that shouldn't be a secret. Other then that my only gripe is that combat lacked weight.

Note that's not the same as lacking complexity, but i never felt like what i was doing was actually affecting the monsters, they barely reacted when I used a big attack that wiped out half their health and my auto-attack gave me the impression I was shooting gumballs at them with a slingshot rather than rapidly shooting them with a gun. I'm not complaining about the damage or anything mechanical, but rather something cosmetic that kept me from connecting with the game itself. I would use my blowtorch skill and wouldn't be sure if I hit the enemy or completely missed and wasn't sure if it mattered and thats when I started feeling like I was wasting time.

I came away from GW2 beta weekend with a negative impression but then I think about everything else it has and I really want to play it, I just hope my issues are cleaned up at launch and aren't considered finished.

It doesn't have pedophilia. The worst you see are shorts. That is a loooooong way from pedophilia.

It's just ignorance on your part. I'm trying to clear it up.

shorts huh? really?...I've seen quite a few screen shots of Terra gear with tini-bikini 13 year olds. They might have been fake...but I dunno.

Oh heavens no, you're right. There's nothing remotely discomfiting about that. I'm well accustomed to seeing short shorts on 8 year olds.

Might have been a mod?

I haven't played that particular race at all. The few that I've seen jumping around don't have a hyper sexualized atheistic to me. It seems more of hyper pixie-like cuteness.
