Honestly, as much hate as Salvation got, I kind of would have preferred to see that timeline get continued. Maybe with more focus on John Connor being a leader and less fanfiction revolving around the special snowflake human robot.
I didn't think Salvation was at bad a film, it doesn't deserve all the hate it gets. It's miles better than T3, which was just a lame remake of T2 with a younger age restriction. With Salvation we finally moved out of the present day and it's increasingly ridiculous time travel plots. We finally got to see the world post-Judgement Day, after all those small glimpses in previous films, which I was glad about. It was the logical next step for the franchise and, despite the stand in cameo, proved that the Terminator films could move on without Arnie.
I too would rather have seen the Salvation timeline get continued into the trilogy it was supposed to become. I think that the next film would've focussed more on John Connor being the leader. Especially as the chain of command was wiped out when the main HQ aboard the submarine was destroyed so the Resistance would need someone to step up which Connor would be able to do; the only reason he could do that is because the machine gave him his heart otherwise John would've died.
I was really looking forward to a sequel to Salvation. However this new film looks a lot better than expected.
Isn't it also a branch of Skynet that is sending back the Terminator's who help Sarah & John Conner? A branch that would rather the war be over, a rogue element of Skynet.
