I'd go with Minecraft.

The usual advantage quoted for Terraria is that it has adventures, where Minecraft doesn't.

The thing is, Minecraft does have adventures. Yet.

Oh, and Minrcraft has pistons.

at this point I'd say terarria for the plain dumb fact that that game is actually being updated frequently
To be honest if I remember correct terraria now is on 1.5 or 1.6 whilst minecraft after all it's time is at 1.7.2 without any real real big changes having happened outside of mods
your forgetting alpha and infdev.....

terraria also has much lower system requirements
either way, terraria is a fully flushed out game, it has some loose story and you actually can get to the point where you are 'done'
minecraft, you just get to the point where you're bored
on that note, if you have a good group of friends that have minecraft, you will get many more hours out of it than terraria

I had a good group of friend with terraria. Our session lasted longer than 6 hours.
That argument will not do. Good group of friends improve any game (we did a drinking game with Daikatana. We had more fun than I ever had playing team fortress 2)

I enjoyed playing Terraria more than Minecraft, so I would go for Terraria.

Here's an idea. Get both. Play both. One's 14.99 euros (you do the math), and the other is 7.49 right now on Steam. That's just over twenty dollars. So go buy both and enjoy all the fun they both have to offer.

I'd recommned buying them both when you have the chance. Though I personally prefer Terraria over Minecraft.

I sunk over 40 hours to Terraria on my first 5 days, not so much on Minecraft. Terraria has more variety in terms of areas/gear/monsters and it takes longer time to reach/get/beat them (f.ex Corruption is almost impossible to traverse without better gear/friends, nevermind Underworld). In Minecraft there really is nothing else than your desert, mountains, snowy area, forests and a single underground layer (at the moment that is), and later Nether. Also, the gear you get in Minecraft is pretty random. You could be donning full diamond in matter of minutes if the world generator is generous enough and you're lucky, but in Terraria no matter how you play, it's going to take a long time to get to the endgame areas and get the best gear. Oh, and the boss fights are goddamn awesome.

Err... Like people have already said, buy Terraria for adventuring, Minecraft for building.

Terraria lasted me a week.

Minecraft has lasted me for several months and is still going.
Pretty much this. It's safe to say that I'm addicted to MC. I've gotten over a weeks gametime on simply one SMP server, never mind all the SSP stuff I've done. Terraria, however, lasted me a week, at best.

Oh, and if you want THE BEST MINECRAFT SERVER KNOWN TO MAN, go here. [http://www.escapecraft.net/]

Well, it depends. Minecraft is a building game with survival elements, and Terraria is a survival game with building elements.

If you want to play Legos, and if building something grand is something you really want to do, I'd buy Minecraft first. If you want something that feels more like an mini-RPG in 2D get Terraria first.
Perfectly summarized, if I do say so myself.

OT: Exactly as above, it really depends weather you want to let your creative mind flow, or if you have a thirst for adventure.

Personally, I'm not sure which one I choose, but I'd have to go with Minecraft by default, since Microsoft .NET 4.0 Framework is being a massive *****, thus preventing me from playing the copy of Terraria I just purchased the other day.

BTW if you've got some buddies with either, go with that for now. both MC and Tarraria are great on their own, but with friends, they're absolute soul-sucking time-wasters. In a good way.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, Minecraft's modding scene is much, much more active than Terraria's, so it's worth taking that into account.
Ah, we must never forget to take into account the insurmountable genius that is the Adventure Map.

i have a good group of friends in terraria to, we have put in about 20 hours onto the game together
i had about 10 hours in terraria before i wanted to find a group
i also have another group of friends on minecraft, we have about 250 hours in our map
i had about 2 hours in minecraft before i got bored and needed to find a group

as i said, if you have a good group in minecraft, you will get many more hours
EDIT: and that group is done with terraria (im currently looking for another group), my minecraft group is still going strong

Terraria has a lot more content for adventure and exploration, as well as better combat.

Whereas Minecraft has better building mechanics and potential for cool machinery (thank goodness for pistons), is 3D, and I find is a lot more pollished, showing a more disciplined and thought out design. Also controls easier. Also looks nicer.

So I prefer Minecraft but you might as well get both, they're not exactly expensive.

On a side note I've never gotten the multiplayer to work for either of them.

Terraria is what I prefer and I own both.

Minecraft is better if you want to create things whilst Terraria is better for having a more focussed gameplay elements like combat (I know Minecraft has optional combat too but Terraria does it much better in my experience). Terraria is awesome when with friends in multiplayer too.

I have both but I only played Terraria for a week and got bored I have been playing Minecraft for 6 months and still I find things to do. So I would say Minecraft all the way.
Thats not to say Terraria isn't a good game I think for me it gets a bit tedious after a while.

Personally I would stick with Minecraft, I really prefer feeling like I'm actually there in the game world and MC pulls this off better. Mods make MC an excellent game to play!

Terraria is pretty fun though, don't get me wrong!
