So has anyone played this game yet?
It is a 2D RPG-ish game with the ability to build and construct things.

Side scrolling Minecraft... Yeah no.

I've heard of it. I've seen it. I'm not highly impressed.

Plus any mention of it is accompanied by breathless enthusiasm to the extent that I can't help but think its just viral marketing. Which isn't impossible.

I might buy this tonight. Was just reading up on reviews myself. Best I can say is that a friend of mine bought it on Steam and played it, more or less, all day long. He maintains that it's brilliant.

It is MUCH mre than "side scrolling Minecraft"
Minecraft is building with pretty random zombie fighting.
Terraria is more of a RPG, with building.
And i think this game called "Real life" invented building things.

You should buy it, only 10$ and pretty good.
Will give you many hours of entertainment, especially if you play multiplayer.

Saw TotalBiscuit's WTF is? video on it. Strange how he absolutely refuses to touch Minecraft with a 50 foot barge pole, and yet he showers Terraria with praise and adoration all the while recognising that the concept and mechanics are pretty much exactly the same, just side scrolling. Okay, so you can make more items than Minecraft, but part of fun (sorry, a huge portion of the fun) in Minecraft is building some incredibly impressive architecture, whether it's a doom fortress, or that shiny golden you-know-what that our very own Yahtzee talked about. Okay, so you can build 2d houses and stuff for your sprites, but sprites really aren't as appealing as the nostalgia gamers would have you believe. Two dimensions feels terribly restricting to me as both a builder and an explorer. I want to be able to craft my masterpiece in three dimensions and be able to behold its glory from all the way on the other side of the map, not that one tiny 2d fixed camera angle space you get. So while i recognise Terraria isn't completely trying to ape Minecraft (even had endorsements from Notch via his twitter), it just doesn't... really hold any appeal to me. What's the purpose of it, if the sandbox element is gone? What's the point in digging if you're not going to be able to build something to be admired later on?

This game sure has a good number of internet people to promote it. I'm begining to wonder if they are paid to do this...
I made this thread merely to discuss about Terraria, but apparently it is hard.

Well its all down to opinions.
And if you prefer pure building, then Minecraft is by far best.
But Terraria has building, and so much more.

A genuine question, but what else does Terraria offer? As far as i was aware there was no structured story to it. It's still randomly generated content like Minecraft with randomly spawning enemies. Is there some kind of ultimate game goal to work towards? What are the RPG elements like that you have mentioned?

Because Terraria has a goal. You build a bigger castle, collect coins, attract vendors and other NPCs, and fight huge boss monsters. What does Minecraft have compared to that? Putting one block on top of another block.

If you're not interested in the "building" aspect of it, Minecraft slaps you with his johnson. Terraria offers you more then that.

You should check out the trailer, I am pretty bad at explaining really.

Edit: And you can look at the above post.

Minecraft has a goal. You build a small hovel to survive the night. You expand it to create a mineshaft or a castle. You create an underground horticultural facility complete with glass sunlight roofs for trees and crops to grow. You create jails and traps for monsters and players. You start designating what corridors go where with signs. You expand it, make it more complex with minecart travel systems. You trim the fat, remove the excess material that gets in the way of the general aesthetic and...

Okay, you get the point. You make your own goal in Minecraft. Terraria might have 'structured' goals of gathering resources, NPCs and the like, eventually culiminating in boss battles, but what's the point...? If there's no overarching goal, it seems trivialised and something that would get boring on repeat playthroughs. The beauty of Minecraft, after all, is that because the player is constantly thinking of new ways to reshape the landscape, they create their own entertainment. While i can recognise this is done to some extent with Terraria, there's only so much you can do with two dimensions and there's only so many times you can go through the arbitrary process of waiting for monsters / NPCs / bosses to come to your little fort before you grow tired of it. I think the attempt to add direction for the player comes off as earnest, but ultimately detrimental to what these kinds of sandbox games are all about. After all, once you've defeated the boss monster for your level, what else is there to do? Wait for another one to show up? Seems pointless once you've taken the challenge out of it by beating it the first time.

Edit: Having seen the steam trailer, notably the impressive 10 second or so section that shows the rudimentary beginnings of a house, through the middle stages, and when it's finally completed does demonstrate the kind of appeal that Minecraft has for me. I suppose it's because i'm rather dubious of the 2d style. It might just be the way my mind's been conditioned to think in terms of Minecraft's landscape, but i just can't really wrap my head around it for long term building projects. Still, it is nice to see such a wide variety of items that can be made and a more improved combat system. (magic gets a thumbs up from me)

Yes, I bought it a few days ago, and it is quite fun. I love Minecraft, but this is similar and different.

Been to the dungeon yet?

Instead of the usual "Mine > Get ores > Get more ores" kind of chain, there's more endgame content than just 1 item set.

You get loads of items, armour, etc. There are dungeons, not just randomly generated caves, but a dungeon that is always on the map, regardless of whatever map you choose. That's also there, you can choose a small, large, or medium map. You can also build so many different types of items, Boomerangs, guns, magic, swords, grappling hooks, etc.

You'd honestly have to play it to find out, it's dirt cheap too, and updates come out a few times a week to balance the game. It supports PvP, and will soon support servers, that I assume, you can find PvP ones on.

OMG THIS GAME IS SO MUCH FUN!!!!!1111!!!1

But seriously it's a fun game, 2d minecraft with magic and special weapons. I had problems playing online at first, but if you run it through Hamachi or something like that it works great.

Definitely worth buying.

There is also "Underground jungle" which is just as hard as the dungeon.
And 3 different bosses.

Dungeon is totally harder. Jus' Sayin'. Those hornets aren't as troublesome as casters that can shoot through walls. ^^

Those casters are no problem for me anymore when I got the sword that reflects water bolts :p
Also all the dungeon items are pretty cool, like the water candle, spikes etc.
