It is MUCH mre than "side scrolling Minecraft"Custard_Angel said:Side scrolling Minecraft... Yeah no.
I've heard of it. I've seen it. I'm not highly impressed.
Plus any mention of it is accompanied by breathless enthusiasm to the extent that I can't help but think its just viral marketing. Which isn't impossible.
You should buy it, only 10$ and pretty good.Hiphophippo said:I might buy this tonight. Was just reading up on reviews myself. Best I can say is that a friend of mine bought it on Steam and played it, more or less, all day long. He maintains that it's brilliant.
I made this thread merely to discuss about Terraria, but apparently it is hard.Sober Thal said:This game sure has a good number of internet people to promote it. I'm begining to wonder if they are paid to do this...
Well its all down to opinions.Gralian said:Saw TotalBiscuit's WTF is? video on it. Strange how he absolutely refuses to touch Minecraft with a 50 foot barge pole, and yet he showers Terraria with praise and adoration all the while recognising that the concept and mechanics are pretty much exactly the same, just side scrolling. Okay, so you can make more items than Minecraft, but part of fun (sorry, a huge portion of the fun) in Minecraft is building some incredibly impressive architecture, whether it's a doom fortress, or that shiny golden you-know-what that our very own Yahtzee talked about. Okay, so you can build 2d houses and stuff for your sprites, but sprites really aren't as appealing as the nostalgia gamers would have you believe. Two dimensions feels terribly restricting to me as both a builder and an explorer. I want to be able to craft my masterpiece in three dimensions and be able to behold its glory from all the way on the other side of the map, not that one tiny 2d fixed camera angle space you get. So while i recognise Terraria isn't completely trying to ape Minecraft (even had endorsements from Notch via his twitter), it just doesn't... really hold any appeal to me. What's the purpose of it, if the sandbox element is gone? What's the point in digging if you're not going to be able to build something to be admired later on?
A genuine question, but what else does Terraria offer? As far as i was aware there was no structured story to it. It's still randomly generated content like Minecraft with randomly spawning enemies. Is there some kind of ultimate game goal to work towards? What are the RPG elements like that you have mentioned?Grufflenark said:But Terraria has building, and so much more.
Because Terraria has a goal. You build a bigger castle, collect coins, attract vendors and other NPCs, and fight huge boss monsters. What does Minecraft have compared to that? Putting one block on top of another block.Gralian said:Saw TotalBiscuit's WTF is? video on it. You should check out the trailer, I am pretty bad at explaining really.Gralian said:A genuine question, but what else does Terraria offer? As far as i was aware there was no structured story to it. Minecraft has a goal. You build a small hovel to survive the night. You expand it to create a mineshaft or a castle. You create an underground horticultural facility complete with glass sunlight roofs for trees and crops to grow. You create jails and traps for monsters and players. You start designating what corridors go where with signs. You expand it, make it more complex with minecart travel systems. You trim the fat, remove the excess material that gets in the way of the general aesthetic and...Altorin said:Because Terraria has a goal. If you're not interested in the "building" aspect of it, Minecraft slaps you with his johnson. Terraria offers you more then that.
Yes, I bought it a few days ago, and it is quite fun. I love Minecraft, but this is similar and different.Grufflenark said:So has anyone played this game yet?

Instead of the usual "Mine > Get ores > Get more ores" kind of chain, there's more endgame content than just 1 item set.Gralian said:A genuine question, but what else does Terraria offer? There is also "Underground jungle" which is just as hard as the dungeon.Blights said:Played the game through with 2 other friends, we're going to venture into the underworld tomorrow.Instead of the usual "Mine > Get ores > Get more ores" kind of chain, there's more endgame content than just 1 item set.Gralian said:A genuine question, but what else does Terraria offer? You get loads of items, armour, etc. There are dungeons, not just randomly generated caves, but a dungeon that is always on the map, regardless of whatever map you choose. That's also there, you can choose a small, large, or medium map. You can also build so many different types of items, Boomerangs, guns, magic, swords, grappling hooks, etc.
You'd honestly have to play it to find out, it's dirt cheap too, and updates come out a few times a week to balance the game. It supports PvP, and will soon support servers, that I assume, you can find PvP ones on.
Dungeon is totally harder. Jus' Sayin'. Those hornets aren't as troublesome as casters that can shoot through walls. ^^Grufflenark said:There is also "Underground jungle" which is just as hard as the dungeon.Blights said:Played the game through with 2 other friends, we're going to venture into the underworld tomorrow.Instead of the usual "Mine > Get ores > Get more ores" kind of chain, there's more endgame content than just 1 item set.Gralian said:A genuine question, but what else does Terraria offer? And 3 different bosses.
Those casters are no problem for me anymore when I got the sword that reflects water boltsBlights said:Dungeon is totally harder. Jus' Sayin'.
