The idea of gray goo, a nano tech machine that endlessly replicates itself would require a lot of technology we don't even have. At this point sending bombs to nano tech researchers to keep such a scenario from ever happening is like killing the wright brothers to prevent 911 from happening.

I Live in Mexico, they also tried to bomb a school inside the "Instituto Politecnico Nacional" (National Polytechnic Institute.) Creepy shit, I'm on my first semester of Nanotechnology, and fourth semester of Physics in that school.

{Edit}Note: The bomb was difused before it went off, and the teacher who gave classes at Monterrey Tech also gave classes in that school, so it was mostly targeting him.

Well, someone missed the Nanotech journal article that pointed out grey goo scenarios (and nanotech that might cause them) aren't possible with our current understanding of physics -.-

(You know, the one written by the dude thought of Grey Goo first)
They aren't possible in general unless we've completely missed the barn on some parts of Quantum and EM Theory. Gray goo has this terrible problem of falling apart to applied static magnetic fields which will bypass any sort of electromagnetic shield and creating electromagnetic effects within said shielding resulting in fried and worthless circuitry. Not hard to make/simulate and use to destroy said gray goo, heck our sun does this every few cycles (read thousands of years) with enough strength to bypass our shielding magnetic field from the Earth.

There's a good reason we're made of carbon and all gooey on the inside.

I got an idea! I'll propose nano-carbon covered nanobots!

They'd have to be made of carbon, not covered in it... you know, like that other goo we live with on a daily basis: life.

Aren't nanobots just tiny robots. You didn't need to blow the lab up guys. on the off chance things got out of hand you could just brake out the magnets.

I'm messing around ;) As in "If X Happens Y also does, and Y is a situation we'd like to avoid.

Hey! Science! Lets do X!" Scenario

Protip;

Trying to bomb labs containing things you fear will escape due to error and etc, going out of your way to accidentally a whole containment field trying to stop them, makes you a complete and utter idiot.
You just took the words right out of my mouth.

It's like saying "I HATE NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS! IT'S DANGEROUS!", and then trying to bomb a nuclear power plant... >_<

They are targeting nanotech, not nanobots. Nanotech encompasses working with sizes between 1 and 100 nanometers. But that doesn't necessarily mean robots, you can also make (for instance) circuits with it, along with many other things, Being a bit anal here, but huge difference. Also, you wouldn't see the nanobots.

So unless you are going to walk around with a "Magnet armor"...

I think these idiots need to add '28 days later' to their, obviously extensive, 'Sci-fi disaster movie' collection. They should watch the first scene repeatedly until the penny drops...

Then it is even less reasonable to think that this technology could go out of hand... But i would totally wear magnet armor

This is actually retarded enough for me to believe they're just really bored and came up with the backstory to mess with people.

The "bots" aren't scary (weakness to magnets and all, as previously mentioned) its really the novel ways people find for pathogen delivery with these nanomaterials that's frightening. You deliver a nice virus through some novel, undetectable, airborne method (on purpose or by accident) and things can go out of control real quick.

Given that the new Deus Ex title just released, I almost have trouble believing that this is even real news. Did somebody just take their gaming a little too seriously? Are they celebrating the release in a new and bizarre fashion?

Aw man, I'm gonna study nanotech...
It's true that nanobots can destroy the Earth if used for evil, but so much technology can say the same. I was hoping to use it to cure all diseases... I don't think terrorism is the way to get people to their cause.
Isn't that what made the zombies in numerous ways? Saying they found a cure for restoring life's cells, curing all diseases, but turning them into zombies later? or mutated smart apes, or mutating limb-shooting prototype? :p sounds like we got this department filled with enough tales already?

Also, ethical question, wouldn't curing every disease make the people problem much much larger?

This is why I'm tired of Hollywood demonizing science... people like these morons read too many bad technophobic rants and actually believe this shit is possible.
