Excuse my long-winded title. I'd like to know more about the members' curiosities.

ever had a time you tested a well known theory that you learned or were told and successfully disconfirmed it?

For example: my parents always told me using my laptop for excessive amounts of time will damage my eyes, while reading will not (granted they are buttfucks, but thats not the point). yesterday I tried this theory by comparing 6 hours of web surfing to 2 hours of intense reading. the result? My eye strain was at least ten times stronger after reading the book in contrast to the aformentioned web surfing.

lets hear your theory debunking stories!

That staring into the sun for extended periods of time would make you need glasses.

10 staring minutes, and Two weeks later, I had glasses.

...Whoops.

I'm in the middle of an ongoing experiment with Karma.
So far nothing, but should it turn out to be true I will one day be struck down by the wrath of an angry God.

I've heard many people make the theory that every (or most) Muslim youth will turn "extremist" between the ages of 16-20 even if they have a normal, good life in a first world country.

I'm almost 19 and I still am the most peaceful person you will ever meet with no urge to do anything violent and I still want to be a CPA; kind of like every other fellow young Muslim I've ever known and still know today. If there is a Muslim (only called so because of his heritage) that has gone or will go extreme, it's pretty easy to tell. The lack of intelligence and screwed up viewpoints about Islam itself and the world are a dead giveaway.

Or Shiva. You better hope it's not Kali cause she will fuck you up.

OT: That people who had gone to college could outsmart me when they were clearly talking out their asses. Way back in the (about ten years ago now) in a class some doctor/tosspot came to one of our classes and told us that "Science" had proved people with Brown hair and Brown eyes were smarter than people with Blonde hair and Blue eyes. Yes they just did reverse Hitler as part of a psychological experiment to teach us all a lesson about something retarded. What was worse was the explanation was just "science" said so in the form of genes, honest it's true.

Really the main thing that gave it away is I honestly can't see a school having someone come in and say that a segment of the population is inferior without a severe backlash. Anyone else ever encounter this bullshittery? I know in america they did it several times in the 60's with kids between eight and 12.

Stop ruining good stereotypes, running around being well-adjusted.

The 16-20 bit is kind of accurate it's just ignoring the catalogue of anti-social and isolationist behaviours that the recruiters look for. That's the problem with people looking for terrorists everywhere, they start to SEE them everywhere.

Hmm, I read somewhere that sugar doesn't actually make kids hyper, and that it's purely a psychological thing. I cant remember if it was a reputable source but I preach it from the rooftops at anyone who will listen.

That is possibly the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. wtf?

... I proved Santa didn't exist when I was 6 by following my dad around when he got the mail. I saw that box under the tree a little later... And then I proved the tooth fairy didn't exist by putting my tooth under my pillow but not telling my parents for three days.

The one I mostly do these days is prove that not every teenager on the internet is an asshole or an idiot.

I'm sorry! I didn't mean to! I'll be better I promise! :(
ummmmmm......DEATH TO AMERICA!!! DIE INFIDELS!!!! 72 VIRGINS HERE I COME!!!!
Is that better? :)

In all seriousness I think this theory came to be because of a few misguided Muslim youth in England (I think...) where a recruiter got to them and convinced them to do something violent and stupid "in the name of Islam". Their lives (and heads) werent stable to begin with and being young and impressionable didn't help.

It would be nice if they were legitimate theories/beliefs and not your own personal strawmen.

Stuff that's obviously not true before you even talk about it is kind of a waste of discussion, isn't it?

Karma and god are two separate things which don't relate to each other. its more the idea of What you do comes back at you. I found it to be very accurate.

EDIT: OK they don't Always relate to each other. I know plenty of people not believing in a god. while they do believe in Karma.
