Why do you think you see so many cops on the side of the road waiting to give out speeding tickets? Oh, sure, they call it production (because calling it a quota would apparently be illegal), but they do have to give out a whole book of tickets each month. That's also why they tend to be less forgiving of violations at the end of the month. They got to meet that quota! Seriously, I've heard of plenty of cities talking about increasing the amount of tickets that the police have to give out in order to raise money. Did you really think it was to promote public safety?
Yeah of course I'm aware they do this, but a few tickets here and there couldn't possibly be enough sustainable revenue. The government should really step in to ensure that all essential services, big and small, are properly funded. Ticketing is just an exercise in futility. In the future, they might end up ticketing us if we breathe the wrong way.

ah republicans "The rich dont need to pay taxes lets make budget cuts. Now lets see wat to cut. our income? nah, I know the police! its genius and we can blame the dems for it."
And how do you blame that on republicans? Where in the article were republicans mentioned anywhere?
its tx, those bastards pretty much own this stupid state, in fact perry is probably gonna do a presidential run based on 6 billion in the rainy day fund that he and the other republicans prevented anyone from using just so he could say it was there

Haha, they cut the police force, of all things, from the budget? I'm almost tempted to say that they deserve the chaos they've got coming to them.

so does this mean that police departments in neighboring towns are going to make their cops due double duty to protect this town? Alto has all kinds of trouble brewing up for them.

Such a small little town can't support a police department? Not news, really.
Pretty much this.

My hometown has less people in it (By a considerable degree), but has the same population density. The have one part time police officer. I fail to see why this town actually needs a police department, when simply hiring 1-2 police officers could cover the area (The could even do what my home town did, and basically outsource their police officers. You give their salary to the closest large town, and in turn, they give you a police officer that actually patrols your neighborhood. And you don't have to pay for the building they work out of, as well as numerous other small oddities).

Basically, small town victim of poor ass planning.

Detroit for everyone! Horray! :D

Well, one can hope that people don't turn into animals... But having seen how quickly New Oreleans population morphed into degenerate savages. Yeah, my hopes aren't high. Lucky me i'm not even on the same continent.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that in a large city the revenue from tickets can range in the millions of dollars in a given year. A local police department is actually giving out mostly warnings in protest of some recent decisions made by the local government regarding pay, such as merit pay increases (there are none). And from what I heard, it WAS hurting the city funds. Or they were. I'm honestly not sure if they are still doing that or not. The point is, you should underestimate how much revenue tickets actually generate.

I only made a joke based on current politics sorry.
Well, the rich do pay a shit ton of taxes, as do the allegedly rich and middle class. That aside, budget cuts are the way to go. This, however, is ridiculous. If you have to make cuts, cut everything but the police.
I'm of the mind that governments should only exist for common-sense business regulation, emergency services, and military, anyway.
Well, the state has already cut Education, can't cut that anymore, or schools will up and vanish.

While i generally agree with this statement you have to keep in mind this is a small town who in all likelihood was self contained. And that very few big ol' corporations make there home in that town i doubt. It seems like everyone in this country is taking a hit BUT the politicians.

It happened in a small town not too far from where I live in Florida a few years back, too. When the taxes that go to pay for this stuff get cut, eventually a point comes where there isn't enough money to pay for it. Incidentally, it hasn't made too big of a difference; we're talking about a tiny town, and a county with plenty of cops.

Here in Northern Ireland most of our small police stations have been shut down, for example I live in a village of 500 people, and the nearest police station is pretty much 15 minutes away, so we are in the same situation as this town, although according to wikipedia its population is 1164, so thats twice our size. Americans seem to have this belief that were it not for their extreme deterrants they would be getting burgaled every single night. Oh, hold on, theres a noise downstairs, I'll be right back...
Americans are afraid of anarchy which leads to the whole "burgled every single night" thing. Then again we're afraid of everything that ends in "-ist" Communist...terrorist...florist.

And don't come downstairs yet I've almost got all your cutlery into the bag.

OT: It's absolutely ridiculous to cut emergency services. I'll admit I'm not the most pro-government guy but a police force is one of the most basic requirements.

But that's exactly it.

You're talking about tickets collected from a city, and this is a very small town. So I'm still not convinced they were making reasonable money from tickets to begin with. I don't know the internalized politics, and I don't know how the US government manages funding for essential services but it sounds like a disaster I'm glad to be miles away from.

Awesome, now lets get rid of schools and hospitals too, the population could use some trimming and McDonalds isn't going to staff itself.
