It depends on who I'm talking to and with which medium. I usually always use proper grammar except for chatting.

I type normally by default even when txting. I make sure to use the 160 character limit (unless multi-messages then I use the limit as much as possible) because else I feel it's wasted space.

meh i'm definitely above a 6th grader when it comes to spelling like i'm texting, however i use most shortcuts out there that are common enough.

i do know some people who take it to the extreme though, like this one i got the other day:

"idts, mabe, i check out aft work, i got 1 mor, u can hav aft i get bak"

i mean i could understand it..but jesus, shorthand is short!

The only time I'm not anal about spelling and punctuation is in game. People say I'm annoying that way but being the son of a speech/language pathologist and a teacher myself, it's just kind of hammered into my head so hard it's tough to write any other way.

I always text properly, and I always have, even with a traditional number pad layout (predictive texting made it simple enough to write in actual English). Now I have a shiny touchscreen phone with access to a full QWERTY keyboard, there's no excuse not to. It's quite amusing that my sister and I both text in prose, whereas my parents both use text speak extensively. To be honest, I think text speak makes any message look ridiculous. How much longer would it have taken to write it properly?

Worst case of this I had was when a girl I'd asked out earlier rejected me with a text message that included the immortal line 'Ur a rly gr8 guy, but...' typed exactly like that. That really made me feel special. [/sarcasm]

I take my time and make sure my spelling and grammar are correct. I hate trying to decipher text speak. Whether it be text messages, internet forums, facebook, twitter, etc... It makes no sense and makes you look retarded and uneducated. I will of course make an exception with text messages in which I am one letter over what it is for one page of text to send to change like "to" to "2" because I personally hate having a text with one word on it. That is my only exception though. Or I will shorten a word to make it that one page text. I went to school, received an education, and like to appear to people as though I have received the education that I did. Also, internet/text speak tends to hurt my eyes and my head when I have to decipher it.

It really bothers me when people try to TyPE lEyek Disszz!1 or when someone can't differ between "your" and "you're". Even with how quick it is to shorten words during typing, I do not type incorrectly. There is usually a time and a place for that, but I always type properly, regardless of the situation.

However, apart from some abbreviations, the only short phrase I use sometimes is "u" for you.

Chatspeak is my biggest petpeeve. If you're too lazy to speak basic English, and use the reasonable IQ you have...It's just pathetic. There's no excuse.

It takes longer but I always attempt proper spelling and grammar when texting. Predictive text, autocorrect, and booze tend to throw me off from time to time though. It actually bothers me if I notice a mistake after sending the message.

Anyone that sends me texts using standard text or internet shorthand gets a load of shit from me the next time we meet face to face. I guess that's why no one texts me anymore.
