TF2 Hatless Update Bug

I've been having problems with TF2 since the Hatless Update. My game starts fine, I join a match, play for a while, and then the game freezes, crashes, and I'm told that hl2.exe has stopped working. The time I get to play varies, but it ALWAYS crashes. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a way to fix it? I'm just praying that this doesn't turn out like Left 4 Dead 2 (it updated and the requirements were too much for my computer, it's unplayable until I get a new computer), seeing as how TF2 is a contender for my favorite game of all time (I bought it last Summer, already have over 500 hours logged). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE: Just sent in a bug report to Valve. I included m email address, so to everyone else who's having this problem, I'll post their reply here.

Sorry mate, never had that problem.

It would probably help more though to post your problem on a Valve forum, if you haven;t done so already.

Good luck in getting it all sorted out :3

Send a bug report to valve. Input like this is how they avoid problems in the future, as well as fix what there is. It won't be immediate, but it will be addressed.

Believe me, I've been having the same issues here, Bantha. I play on my Macbook Pro, and the Hatless Update has completely made my TF2 unplayable as well. I'll join a game, take two steps, and the whole thing will take a crap all over itself and freeze, locking up Steam as well.

I'm in the process of reinstalling the game due to all of this. That's the only solution I can think of.

Sorry, I can't really help you, but know that you aren't the only one having this problem.

Actually...

You're lucky you can launch TF2 at all. I'm on Mac, and I've been struggling with it all day. Whenever I try to launch it, it either gets stuck on "Preparing to launch Team Fortress 2" or gets to about 41% on "Validating Steam Files" and just sits there.

I've tried completely uninstalling/reinstalling both TF2 and Steam. Installing TF2 was a *****, too, but that I know is from all these Potato Sack people overloading the Steam servers playing those games for Portal 2.

I checked out the Steam forums, and this seems to be a widespread problem for both Mac and PC users since the patch on Thursday. From what I read, they released another patch which was supposed to fix it, but it hasn't solved anybody's problems yet. So my guess is they'll get something out by tomorrow or Monday. Until then, all we can really do is wait :-\
The exact same issue on this end. I'm on a Mac as well.

I have the same problem. I lost some items too. Also, it said someone logged onto my account and kicked me off one time. I thought it was my bro but his computer is broken.

I also am paranoid about missing money. I accidentally deleted the amount I had recorded and after I added some and recounted it seems too small.

Edit: lol, wrong pic.

Yep, happens to me as well. After about fifteen minutes or so the game crashes on me.

Guess I'll be playing more Killing Floor until the issue is addressed, probably on Monday (Valve doesn't update on weekends).

I think it's a common problem since there was a pretty big engine overhaul with this update. Unfortunate, but hopefully it'll all work for the best.

It was getting pretty bloated before, so it did need an overhaul.

Happens with me. I can't play in more than ten minute intervals, and when the game crashes it won't close, I have to manually restart my PC.

Also, all my skins are fucked up, I had to remove all of them (annoyingly), and when I hit the Manage Items button on the main screen and choose a class to change, TF2 takes a fast and immediate trip to crashing town.

Do you have any custom content enabled? I was told my female model replacements (and other custom models) are crashing the game after the latest update.

I was hoping this'd be a joke like "There are still hats in the game." Alas, I was misled.

Go into C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps (Or the Mac equivalent) and delete team fortress 2.gcf. When you launch the game TF2 will realize that you are missing that file and re-download it, it should work after that.

I've already done it once but the bug reared it's ugly head once more and I'm doing it again as we speak (Type, whatever).

I'll understand if you'd rather not take technical advice from strangers on the internet but it worked for me so... >_>

On the Mac equivalent of that file, I'm seeing three Team Fortress 2.gcf files. There's tf2 client content, tf2 content, and tf2 materials. Were there three of them there for you, as well?

There are a number of bugs that hopefully Valve will address soon:
  • Random hl2.exe crashes
Team Spirit does not Display properly when using the Switch Teams Button in Hat and Items Preview in the Mann. Co. Store
Rotating Building Blueprints makes "Cannot Pick Up" sound effect, which is annoying
    Cubemap errors on some maps
Voting Windows appear behind Achievement Progress bars in the in-game HUD, making them difficult to read

No I have those too, I deleted all of them the first time and it worked, then the guy I got the tip from (Steampowered forums) said that only that one file needs to be deleted. If you delete just the team fortress 2.gcf and it doesn't fix it go back and delete all three, but it will take longer if you do it that way.

EDIT: The guy I got the tip from was using a Mac BTW, I'm using a PC and his tip worked perfectly, twice I might add.

There's enough whi...complaining about this bug on the Steam forums, did you really feel it necessary to bring it here too?

Oh good. This is actually a relief for me. My computer just had a major meltdown and I had to reinstall Windows 7 and start with a clean slate a few days ago, and ever since TF2 has been crashing. It's good knowing that the issue is with the recent update.

And yes, I have been having the issue as well.
