I too originally thought Australian but heard some much better arguments for British a while ago.

What's your take?

What are the arguments for British? I've always thought it was quite clear he was Australian.

EDIT: especially since this is the bio from valve's team fortress page...

Country of Origin: Australia
Role: Support

In his former life as a tracker of dangerous game in the unforgiving Australian outback, the Sniper would spend months by himself. Prolonged isolation taught him a valuable lesson: You don't have to rely on other people if you never miss.

Australian. Undoubtedly Australian. I take it you're from the US?

[Edit]I swear I didn't mean to start a flame-war

What does that have to do with anything? Is it the sterotype that all Americans are retards? Well, I've met more idiotic Brits than Americans in TF2, just saiyan.
OT, he's obviously an Aussie, but he doesn't ride a kangaroo to the battle... so he must be a Brit! /sarcasm

I meant no offence, I'm from New Zealand (a country sometimes confused as part of Australia). My logic is that the biggest countries which predominantly speak English are the UK, the US and Australia. No-one in their right mind from the UK or Australia would ever entertain the idea that the sniper's accent is British, there is however a slim chance that someone from deep inside the US might be a tad confused coming from a country with its own set of accents.

I'll admit, this does take some massive leaps in reasoning. I know not all Americans are as stupid as the loud-mouthed morons in the broadcasting business.

He's supposed to be Australian. Says things like "thats how we do it in the bush" and he doesnt say "Mate" like people in blighty do, he says it in that Australian "Mayte" kinda way.
Speaking as a UK native, if that lends me any kind of authority :|

British? Who said that? Ever?

It's pretty obvious from the intro video that he's Australian.

Also...

So... Australian it is.

Hold on...

What?
No. Just no. There's NO possible argument for him being British. Nobody from Britain speaks like that (unless they're ACTUALLY from Australia).

I hope he's British, because I've never met another Australian that speaks in that ridiculously stereotyped way he does. Valve probably thinks we all use kangaroos as our only mode of transport or something.

His accent is that of a British person putting on an Australian accent. The character himself is Australian though.

... You do realise it's a joke, right?

Seriously. All the TF2 characters are over-exaggerated stereotypes.

All of the characters are stereotyped. I doubt many Scottish people talk like the Demoman.

Given Gabe's been there [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/94640-L4D-Modder-Raising-Funds-to-Fly-Gabe-Newell-to-Australia], I doubt it's anything more than exaggeration.

One of the comics shows a picture of Australia and it's just a bunch of Saxton Hales brawling or something. All TF2 characters are ridiculous stereotypes though, except for the Pyro who is a non-entity and always will be.

Oh I don't know about that, I once heard a pretty convincing argument he was Chinese ;)
Jokes of course, that made me laugh a fair bit :p

Wait you mean we don't all have moustaches (including our buxom women) and harness Australium in order to make ourselves the most technologically advanced country in existence?????
