Didn't see a thread anywhere else like this, so wa-hey.

What do you guys think of the weapons? Personally, I'm disappointed. The Demo seems to get very... well, not creative, but going away from the usual, but the Solider... eh. That's my personal feeling.

Share your thoughts.

EDIT: Also, the Demo's last weapon has been revealed. I don't see people using it over the regular stick launcher, but I guess the large clan matches it could be useful.

Soldier's weapons are great, now people who are skilled can use alt rocket launcher at the cost of splash and that buff is very nice. As an offensive class, it's logical they put a crit boost and pickaxe bonuses. Demo... first I thought it's just silly, but I'll probably love new gadgets over time (using it to make Braveheart machinima is a neat bonus). New sticky has a great concept (activating only the group of mines you point at) and since it's reloading time is slower than default sticky's, it won't feel over/under-powered.

I knew that bugle was coming, but I didn't expect the pick-axe to show up in the Soldier update, what does that have to do with a Soldier? I mean, I can see why an Engineer would end up with a pick-axe, seeing as he is a construction worker, but a Soldier?

I would've liked a Civil War style sabre or something, yes the Demoman has a sword too, but that only makes it better in this war scenario. I'm cool with the mechanics behind the the Equaliser though, just would've liked a different skin.

It was more of a mining pick, in my opinion.

And mining picks are - or at least CAN - be used in order to dig trenches, especially in certain conditions when the ground is too hard to dig with a regular shovel. So it makes perfect sense.
Pick-axe, mining pick, same thing. Some have a little shovel thingy on one side, some just have 2 points. It matters not, it's still not something iconic for a Soldier unlike the bugle, and if TF2 is known for something, it's for being so delightfully stereotypic. I prefered the looks suggested by that bloke who thought of the mechanics first:
A Trusty old spade, perhaps a little more well-rusted than the traditional shovel. Wrapped around this shovel are dog-tags and chains, with a knotted mess hanging down across the soldier's fingers. This symbolizes the pain and lost comrades of the soldier (so what if he made up his fellow platoon-mates, they are real to him!)
Or the broken spade with 1 side sharpened, like that other guy said. All awesome, all more iconic than the pick-axe.

But lets not get too hung up on details, it's still a pretty damn cool weapon complimenting the rocket-jump (which I still cannot preform properly, I just don't know how to do the really long one's), making the Soldier even more of an assault class together with the bugle. The Demoman is even more defensive with the new stickies. Love the names of the new achievements too, by the way, Valve cheesiness once again.

The argument I was making for the pick-axe/ mining pick was that it fit the soldier well.

Look at his uniform - it's certainly inspired by something that came from WW1-WW2, 2 of the biggest wars of the century, in both of which trench warfare was widely used. Which explains why the soldier has a shovel for his melee weapon.

And that's pretty iconic if you ask me, at least no less then the shovel.
Oh I can see it's use for a real life soldier, yes, and see why it makes perfect sense, but I can't recall seeing pick-axes in stereotypical war movies and pictures, I don't think it's one of the first things a person thinks of when saying "soldier". Besides, a Civil War style sabre (heck that even works with the "back in the day" text in the official update) would look awesome with the Buff Banner. Chaaaaarge! Aw yeah...*nods gangsta style*

It's why I would've rather seen a Crocodile Dundee style massive knife for the Sniper instead of the Kukri, just to name something. Of course a machete makes 100% sense in the Australian bush, but it's so....generic, I like my TF2 over-the-top.

Heh. One can only hope to see some interesting stuff for engineer... The class I kind of hoped to come first instead of Demoman/Soldier.

Yeah, I see where you sentiment comes in relation to the sabre. But I guess one sword per update is enough =p
True, true, although imagine a line of Demomen charging with their shields and sword against a line of Soldiers hurtling forward with their sabres and blowing their bugles ( wagonloads of innuendo right there, just pointing that out to negate it's effect). I mean, that's just awesome!

Anyway, yes, Engineer, I actually expected that to come with the Demoman and Soldier, in an update themed Construction VS Destruction or something. 2 To 1, but the Engineer has his trusty mechanical allies. It would've worked, I think, ah well, I wonder what they'll come up with to make the Engineer update just as epic as this one.

I also rather hoped to see a Meet the Medic video, as they are the one's who keep this war going. Hopefully we'll see that soon, I can only imagine what they come up with, will it trump the Spy one? I hope so.

You want my opinion? New rocket launcer and stickybomb launcher are awesome, and will find lots of uses. Bugle and Eyelander have good mechanics, and vaguely fit with the theme. Targe and pickaxe also have good mechanics, but look totally out of place.

I see people shooting rockets at themselves, then pulling out the Pick Axe and ninja owning guys.

Uh. You will still have to come close, and with low health you're pretty likely to get your butt spanked if your target knows how to shoot. And it's not like soldiers usually walk around with full health - unless there is a medic around... Rocket Jumping takes health.
I know. Thats why I said NINJA.

Ninja usually involves not getting hit.

So camping a corner, or just sneakily running around.

Really that hard to understand?

Hm... if only there was some group on this site for TF2 players...

Oh, wait, there is! [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/The-Escapist-Team-Fortress-2-Group-PC]

Anyway, I'm exited. The precision rocket launcher looks like it will be fun to use, and the targe and eyelander will cause many-a-ragequits.
