TF2: What's The Deal With Earbuds?

So, let's just get all the snickering and looking down upon right away.

I play TF2 on my Macbook. And It functions fine. It also functions well with the other valve games for it, as well as the Sam and Max and GMod. Any quips about my system of choice or the fact that I use it regularly, please be made now.

So, anyway, when I got TF2 on my Mac, the first thing that happened when it got booted up was that I got a pair of free earbuds. Like a badge. So, I thought "Hey, that's pretty cool. I guess I can put it on my characters." And I did. So, I played for a few months, then played some other games and left it alone for a while. Last year, I came back to it and got addicted again.

Now, everyone seems to be making trade offers with me for my earbuds. Once, some guy even added me to his/her friends list and requested a trade. I just hold onto them though for various reasons. THey might be important, I'm sort of wearing a sign that the Mac can play games, and they might be somewhat valuable.

So, my question is why do people want them?

Because you can only get them if you have a Mac, and they look pretty cool.

...and they look sorta neat. Especially on the Spy.

The earbuds were only available to get for about a week. And even then, only when you played on the Mac.

So basically, they're rare, so therefore people want them really badly.

Some people want what they can't get. You have to buy TF2 on a Mac to get them or trade for them. You could probably garner a high price (figuratively) from one of the crazier collectors.

It's retarded, but earbuds are kind of an accepted currency in TF2. They're used in quantities to buy other, more expensive hats, such as Bill's Hat, Max's Severed Head and of course Unusual hats.

It's no surprise so many people want them, because they're trying to work their way up to get more junk.

people freak out over 'rare' items in TF2 for some dumb reason. And for being rare i've seen a lot of them around.

I've had people open trade with me asking for hats i don't have. its so stupid. play the game and leave me alone.

I get asked about mine every day. Some people are pretty desperate to trade for them. (I've had bushels of gear thrown at me in exchange for my earbuds) but I'll never trade them.

When TF2 first launched on the Mac OSX, for a couple of weeks, the earbuds were gifted to the newly introduced Mac users. They were then discontinued, and due to their (relative) rarity, have become hot property around the item trading servers.
