microsoft fixed mine for free.
when my sony tv broke down, I called sony up and they sent a repairman out and fixed it for free. something do about a programming fault in the tv.

If you got a problem with any hardware you have, do a check of the manufacturer's website or support desks. You'll probably find free help even if you didn't buy a warranty.

I'm going to assume that you are past your warranty date and MS is not going to help you without you paying them. So...
I found this website helpful. http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/repair/xbox-360-repair.htm

According to this website based on your error code (0102) http://www.xbox360problemfix.com/E74error.htm

"0102 Error in the "Digital Backbone" (CPU/GPU/RAM), this is usually caused by a cold solder joint between the GPU and the mainboard.

There are two theories to fixing this one deals with the "X" clamps that hold down the chips . The other involves re-Heating the chips . DO NOT attempt either of these if your console is still under warranty. If your console is still under warranty return it to the store where it was purchased or call MS to have it replaced."

EDIT: From what I understand, the problem with your 360 is that the cold solder was not applied correctly. So, you're going to need to disassemble your 360 to clean and reapply the solder under the heat sinks.

Put it in the fridge.

Seriously.

This has actually worked for me and a couple people I know.

Plus this won't void and warranty pressuming it's still valid (up to 3 years for RRoD methinks) so if it doesn't work you can still send it to MS

Just send it to Microsoft and get a new one, then remove a select set of screws on the one you get back to make sure it doesn't happen again.

NONE OF THESE WORK, SEND IT TO MICROSOFT, IT IS THE ONLY SUREFIRE WAY TO GUARANTEE A WORKING XBOX. ALL OF THESE WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY SO IF THEY DON'T WORK THEN YOU ARE SCREWED.

Really sorry for the caps as well as bold, but I wanted to make sure that stood out. Once again, sorry. The thing is, none of these are guaranteed, and if it does work then you're very, very lucky. All of these suggestions will void the warranty so as I said, you're screwed if it breaks down again and you're out of pocket. When I had the RRoD, I sent it straight to Microsoft for repair. Estimated repair time was three weeks. I got it back in two, completely fixed and good as new, and the paperwork was all sorted for me and I was given a free month of XBL Gold membership too. Microsoft have only ever done me good, and by the way, all of this was free as it was covered under the warranty (two and a half years it lasted, in a three year warranty, so it had already had a good run anyway :D). Do not listen to any of these ideas. If you do, don't come running and crying to me when Microsoft refuse to take your 360 in for repairs when it craps out on you again.

Okay, seriously.

Most of the people posting on this thread are idiots, save the ones that are telling you to send it in.

And you're an idiot for not sending it in to begin with.

Both my old roomie and I have 360s. Both of them got the RROD within a week of one another. He wrapped his in a towel and turned it on, left it on for a few hours, and repeated the cycle three times. It worked for about a week and a half. When it stopped working again, he tried the process once more, and the machine caught on fire.

A friend of mine had one that also got the RROD almost a full year before mine did, and the towel trick didn't work for him at all.

I sent mine in, WHILE IT WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY, and got it back in a week and a half. I DIDN'T HAVE TO PAY SHIPPING OR TO HAVE IT REPAIRED, AND I GOT A FREE MONTH OF LIVE GOLD OUT OF IT. That was over a year ago, and I haven't had a single problem with it since.

...

Let that sink in.

SEND IT IN.

...

Point made?

Send it to Microsoft. They may have been stupid for making the 360 so defect-prone, but they are surprisingly quick about getting it repaired.

While you're waiting to get it back, do what I did: dust off your last gen system (in my case, PS2) and buy a game that you missed out on during that system's heyday (in my case, God of War II).

There is no proven fix at the moment... I would say crack that baby open and make it more heat resistant and re solder anything that came off. Actually, I wonder what the guts of a RROD 360 look like compared to a normal one.

Not 100% sure but to hazard a guess I think what the towel method achieves is that it heats up the Xbox to a point where some of the internal components expand and restore functionality for a couple of hours until the expansion effect wears off and the red light error returns.

There's plenty of videos you can pay for as DIY fix-its, but you might as well just download them off Piratebay for free - I don't see why you should have to pay to fix your own damn Xbox?

Make sure you've got a soldering kit and some good tools too.

edit - If you've never had any experience with electronic parts or computers before, I strongly suggest sending it in.
Chances are you'll stuff it up, not even I would be confident enough to give it a crack and I've been working with computers for about 15 years.

Um...I was going to add my two cents about sending it to Microsoft to get fixed, but it looks like everyone else has already covered that.

Just don't muck around with it. Even on the slim chance that you know how the interior of an Xbox 360 works, you'd still probably just make it worse. And then you'd have NO warranty. Up shit creek, as it were.

Send 'er off to Microsoft. They're very fast about getting it back to you. Not to worry. (Relatively speaking, of course.)

You can't fix it

Explanation:

The problem is that the solder joints on the Xenos GPU aren't quite up to the task and fail after many many repeated warming/cooling cycles (because of thermal expansion). The reason the towel trick works is because you're forcing the system to heat up which expands the solder to a point where electrical contact can be made. This also wears the solder more than normal and will eventually cause your system to not work at all.

All that being said, if you're getting a Red Ring of Death error there is pretty much no solution for your issue that doesn't involve sending it back to Microsoft so they can repair the motherboard. You can't resolder the pins yourself because there are hundreds of bga balls packed into a tiny area of the board. It has to be done by a machine.

There you go, now you know why.

Umm if your worried about something cheap..then there is nothing cheaper then validating the warranty and getting a new one for nothing...this shouldn't be a hard decision.

"Have you tried turning it off and on again?"
No seriously, I got pissed when mine red lighted so I kept turning it off and on just in the hope it would work and after about 20 tries it suddenly worked perfectly. Occasionally it'll give me the lights again but I just turn it off and on two or three times and it's fixed!

Send it in. While I have manually fixed an Xbox 360 myself (once with the temporary 'overheat it with a woollen towel' method and once by ripping it open), I'd suggest sending it to Microsoft. If you void your warranty then it breaks again, you're screwed.

Unless, you're saying you've gone ahead and chipped your Xbox 360 or similar and already voided the warranty, in which case it will eventually die anyway. All the other methods will often be temporary, and the ones that aren't are delicate and can either cause problems of their own, or be unfixed if you move it in the wrong way.

Send it to Microsoft if you can; make them damn-well work on what they should have fixed.

I did the clamp fix, but my warranty was voided long before I got the RROD.

If you haven't opened it, send to Microsoft. Seriously, why are you even debating it?

but my warranty has been gone for awhile
thats the only reason i even stooped to the level of "fixing" it myself

Blast! My 360 just went RROD... I have to do this? Dude, that sucks... So I have to sacrifice as in kill a male virgin? Or is the sacrifice something pretty cool? But I guess that wouldnt be much of a sacrifice, unless you are sacrificing your virginity... NOw this is just confusing, cant I just use a goat?
