Ahh, we all remember our first time. That magical moment when we found a game that we were truly addicted to. That first game that washed over us like pixelated heroin, forever ravaging our innocence and dooming us to chase that next level. Whether you were hooked as a child, racing home to flip that heavy metallic switch on your 2600 to try and out dodge Coily in Q-bert. Maybe you put aside your homework, to wander around in a four man line, hypnotized by the ceaseless music of Ultima. We all have that ONE game that was the catalyst to our grown gaming vices. For me it was a game called HERO for the Atari 2600. A platformer in which you play a Heli-pack wearing rescue operative, sent to the aid of trapped miners. Armed with a sweet laser helmet, level after lever, deeper you go. Facing bats, magma walls and butterflies(?!). This game is why I'm not something important today. While there were games that came before it(shout outs to Pong, Pac-Man and the Oregon Trail) This little nugget was what turned me into that glazed eyed fat kid, that would sneak out into the living room late to play with the sound off, and draw pictures of the game's protagonist on my paper-bag book covers. It's the game that made my mom take away my system, because apparently 'fresh air' is important. So whether you got turned out as a youth or you're new to the trappings of addictive gaming my question to the masses is simple. What was the first game you were addicted to? I'm off to play Oblivion...

My god....

Someone else remembers Hero. I *loved* that game.

And as unoriginal as it is to say, mine's the same as the OP, although the Hero I played was on the C64.

I refer to these games as having 'eaten my life'. The first one I can remember was Sonic Spinball, which seriously took up large chunks of time. I think I was doing 4-5 playthroughs a day.

Theme Park on the Mega Drive was another one. That took up not just my time, but everyone else in the family. Even when not playing everyone had to have their opinion on what needed doing.

Final Fantasy 2. Altough in terms of "stay up late and not do stuff I was supposed to" playing Quake 2 CTF online was by far the worst offender.

Dr. Mario ate my family, until the SNES came out and my parents couldn't get any time to play because The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past was becoming the first game to eat their children. And every major Zelda game thereafter has had the same effect.
I finally managed to put down Guild Wars after 3 years though. I'm so proud.

I suppose at some point in my life I did have said one game that set up the addiction... But to be totally honest that was so long and so many games ago I don't think hypnoses could unearth the name of the game... My best guess would be something in the ZX Spectrum, the first place I ever remember playing a game...

I do have a tendency to get addicted to games with some ease, but I suppose the first game to get me to that point of "near-withdrawal-symptoms" would have been Final Fantasy VII...

Spy Hunter. (A stand-up arcade one at that.) I've been ultra-cautious on icy roads ever since.

The Legend of Zelda : Ocarina of Time. I would play that game for days, re-visiting the same places, vainly hoping to be surprised with an entirely new storyline.

I like games 'n all, but I never really GOT to be addicted to one until recently. Even then, there's no particular game that I've given my life for.

Yeah, I'm a sad gamer...
