That book would make a great video game!

I didn't find a thread like this; apologies if I missed it.

Have you ever read a book and thought, "Y'know, this would make a great video game"? This is a thread for that.

For discussion value, give a quick description of the book and why it would be a good video game? What sort of game would it be? What sort of art style would it use (over-the-top cel-shading/gritty realism)? How would it play (serious like Heavy Rain/lighthearted like TF2)?

As for my entry, I'll say World War Z. The book reads like a documentary, exploring how the world would react if a zombie apocalypse actually happened from numerous perspectives. There are stories from North America, Europe, Asia and Africa (that I can remember, there are probably ones from South America as well). The stories cover everything from hospital workers to soldiers to thermonuclear submarine commanders.

The game would be played much like a documentary, with each chapter profiling the events that happened to an individual or an area, told from a point of view suited to profiling said events. These events would be played in a style that suited them (though almost all would be told from a first-person perspective, narrated by the individual being played). Some chapters might just be a cutscene if they wouldn't work as playable sections (the bit about European castles would probably end up like this). Not all chapters would need to end with the PC's survival, though I think they all do end like that in the book.

The first-person segments would probably be most like first-person shooters, but without all the flash and glamour, since the book is very toned-down. You would need to shoot/melee the zombies in the head in order to kill them, since they never completely die otherwise. There probably wouldn't be crosshairs, only the iron sights on whatever gun you happened to be using.

I should state that the purpose wouldn't be to make Left 4 Dead 3 with an international cast (though that would be pretty cool). The purpose of the game would be to provide calm and rational insight as to how the world would function in the case of a zombie apocalypse.

Never thought I'd type that sentence. What do you have to say, fellow Escapists?

I think the Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin would make a decent fantasy RPG. It has the huge scale you'd need, the variety of locations, the different factions all with their own allegiances and the interesting variety of characters. Admittedly the more medieval setting and lack of any real supernatural element could be limiting, but a lot of the detail is already there.

Having said that, making a game that directly fitted into the story probably wouldn't work so well, because unless it was focussed on many different characters instead of one main protagonist, there isn't much of a variety to be had. The way to go would be a new character who has their own goals and own storyline that could take place at the same time as the story in the books and link into elements of it. The amount of dialogue and the like would make it quite reminiscent of a Bioware game, and it would probably be too much like Dragon Age to be a real success, but as someone who loves the series and would love to get even more immersed in Westeros I'd love to see a game.

With the release of the HBO show it's not completely out of the question to expect some sort of tie in if it's successful on the TV, but I wouldn't hold out much hope for it being more than a dreary hack-and-slash.

Here's one. A universe-spanning MMORPG based on The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Maybe get Yahtzee Croshaw and the guy that made Deathspank to work together on it.

...but that is more or less expanding on the universe. I can't honestly think of a book i like that could be made into a game. I can name a few graphic novels that might work, but they don't really count as books, do they?

The Stainless Steel Rat series.

Seriously, I like the series and the thief its based around is put in many different situations that would be great in a game.

Most of the books I read have so much depth, or have a concept that is mostly thought, and is hard to conceptualize, so turning it into a game format would be very difficult.

Hmm...

Re-make the LotR games as RPGs?
Wheel of Time could potentially be a good game (it has more than enough lore to draw off of), but the magic would be hard to nail.

Actually, I don't think a book would work that well as a game(I'm talikng about Journey To The West), but anything is possible, right?
