1. A guy goes around sleeping with as many women as possible, he is probably considered cool and well respected by guys

2. a woman goes around sleeping with as many guys as possible, she is a slut/whore/skank/tramp and many others

now why is this?

I supose there are reasons, a woman who sleeps around that much usually indicates a lack of self respect, (and somtimes the whole sleeping around thing usually comes with being an unlikeable person) how ever I do admit thats generalising which we shouldnt do, thats just speaking from (very limited) experience [/B]

anyway again what about guys? does a guy who sleeps around alot indicate lack of self respect? I dont think so

Well said. Anyway, what you have there is really just guys being guys. We believe we are naturally dominant, thus naturally able to sleep around. Guys see girls who sleep around a lot as trashy. (And in many cases they are) By the way, I wasn't speaking based off my beliefs rather than what appears to be the general idea. I don't care for either gender sleeping around with lots of people.

Now, more serious answer, I'd say it just stems from the differences between genders, mostly social/nurture differences. Overall, men tend to be more gung-ho about sex, and women more withdrawn, because that's what's expected by most western cultures.

Actually, to get into specs here, its a stereotype really. We don't congradulate a guy for having sex with lots of women, we congradulate a guy simply for having legit sex. That's a good way to put it I suppose.

So having sex with lots of women/men could give you self respect. (Implying that lack of sex with women/men would leave you with little self respect)

It's just about positive reenforcement really. Where "positive" is a matter of perspective.

It's the same answer for either gender. It manifests differently because same-gender clusters of friends behave differently. Guys are competitive, and tend to be more concerned with "the playing field". Girls tend to be more inter-connected with each other, so are more interested in "the players". But everyone is playing the same "game".

Vauge and shaky metaphors at best, but it was only way I could think of explaining beyond "so very similar in different ways" or something equally mystifying.


*I* don't think it's cool to go around sleeping with as many women as possible. I'm a hetro guy, and I prefer to make meaningful bonds, I am heavily governed by what I see as "right". And I feel any relationship worthwhile involves two people sharing more than a bed together.

I wouldnt exactally call it a double standard as in this case the word "*****" has two meanings

1. ***** being basically the female equivalent of Bastard or Asshole,

2. ***** basically meaning "you are my *****" as in "I am the boss of you, shut up and do as I say" while its usually used for guys it can also apply to girls (though theres somthing rather mysoganist and unpleasant about applying it to girls) so its usually used as an insult for guys

Or they just want sex because they're horny. That's the reason why most "tramp" women I know sleep around. Most of them respect themselves more than I do, and it has nothing to do with dicking.
