THAT double standard, why does it exist?

A lot of people assume this is a double standard enforced mainly by men. Which is completely untrue. Think about what you've seen personally and you'll probably realise that it's rarely ever men who call or consider a woman a slut, or make her feel bad for being free with her sexuality. It's usually fellow women (I stress "usually" here, just for the record. You do get the possessive man types who like to throw the word "slut" around). You've all seen and heard it. For some reason it's a big thing in modern western culture for women to treat each other, frankly, really really badly. So if you're wondering where any of these double standards come from, that's what you really want to be investigating. The old days of women being oppressed by a male-dominant society are over. These days women's biggest enemies are quite often themselves.

EDIT: Might as well throw in an opinion on top of an observation. I don't care how many guys you've screwed, as long as you're clean and I like you anyway, it's all good.

Here's my guess.

When women look for guys, it's like they're hitting up the grocery store.

When guys look for women, it's like they're in hunting grounds.

Getting a guy is easy. Getting a girl is tricky.

men hunt, they really want a one night stand and that would do it for them, its the chase, from chatting her up to bringing her to ur place and pullling. A guy with a string of one nighters is seen as a success.

Women are domesticators. Grab a worthwhile man from the wild, make him stay, convince him that she is all he wants in his life and have a long term relationship.

A woman with a string of one nighters means she is good at luring guys in, shit at keeping them.

More importantly, different standards come from different judges. A man is judged by his peers, (fellow men) a woman by hers (other women).

So if women want really are looking for someone to blame for this its her freinds and who she listens to

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

What a load of shit. I could rant about how offensive this is to women, but I'd rather focus on men. You do realize that by saying this you are claiming that men in general have very low standards, no? Just about every single man I know would contradict this.

Don't forget that it's the feminists who hate men! Even though it's guys like this who think all men are desperate for sex, universally unattractive to women, have no standards, have to pay for sex because ...I dunno, I guess they're terrible at it? Considering all the decent, fun and good-looking guys I know (who get plenty of sex) it's just sad to think some men have such low self-esteem (and such a low opinion of their fellows.) As a feminist I have a much better view of men -- and women, those stupid bland ugly (but still bangable) things! -- than that guy does! :p

Here's a new double standard for the thread! Since you all seems stuck on the 'Guys a stud, girls a whore' one, here is a new one. Still involving sex.

A guy can be fine with the idea of a threesome with two other women. But if the woman suggest two other guys version threesome the male is more often against it even if the woman is alright/open to the first option. The concept is fair from both views, but usually far less accepted on one version from males.
A variant of this: having sex with 2 identical twin sisters is supposedly the height of awesome for men of a certain mindset. I'm not sure how they'd react to an offer of a threesome involving their own brother.
Yeah its something about for guys just seem more likely and open to do such things for the sake of sex till it gets turned on them. Not saying girls are any more alright or open to such ideas, but males just play the double standard off way more.

It's is no harder for a guy to get laid than it is a girl. As you said a guy is not going to try to get with an unattractive woman so unless you're incredibly stunning girls have to put in effort too. Some girl put in hours of effort doing their makeup and making sure what they're wearing looks good on them just to get a guy to look at them. While guys usually make the first move girls still put in the same amount of effort to keep a good conversation going and worry about the same things that guys worry about when trying to pick up someone. No offence intended here but you've made it sound like all that matters is looks and that's pretty shallow.
If you're looking for a relationship then yes, all of that stuff matters absolutely. Thinking otherwise would be completely shallow and would no doubt be a terrible relationship. However, if you're just looking to get laid like the thread is about, then just looking good is enough for a girl. A guy will keep talking to a girl even if she's completely boring if he thinks he'll get laid, but if he was looking for a relationship he'd leave as soon as he knew he wasn't interested.

Working on makeup and all that jazz is time consuming and whatnot, but IMO working on your appearence and actually making moves on people are completely different. One can be perfected and an entire day could be dedicated to it if needed for whatever reason. The other is all in the moment, requires a lot of confidence and some guts to get things going.

If a girl is looking for a relationship then she should be thinking the same thing as the guy is as well... but if she just wants sex then she can often just pick out a guy she finds attractive and make it happen.

1. A guy goes around sleeping with as many women as possible, he is probably considered cool and well respected by guys

This actually isn't true.

If a key opens lots of locks, then it's a master key. But if a lock is opened by lots of keys, then it's a shitty lock.

Edit: May as well add a little something extra.
We also celebrate the man for the skill it took. Lets be honest here. Unless you look like a male model, have a wallet fatter than your cock or have a python hiding in your trousers then picking up a chick is not going to be a cakewalk. You have to have charm, be funny, interesting, blah blah blah.
For a chick to pick up a guy, all she has to do is exist. She does not have to be smart, funny or even that good looking. As long as she is not a total cave troll than guys will flock to her with no effort required on her part.
Guys have to hunt for sex. Women have it hand delivered.
This sums up the matter perfectly.
