That game series/franchise you used to love, that you think have destroyed themselves?

Kingdom Hearts. The original game was Final Fantasy and Disney in equal parts; it borrowed many elements and gameplay mechanics from the JRPG genre while sticking to a decidedly Disney mood, never taking itself too seriously. Starting with Chain of Memories, the balance began to slide closer to Final Fantasy and farther from Disney, forgoing the lighthearted mood of the first game to focus on melodramatic plot twists involving the paper-thin characters original to the KH universe.

The series has now become completely unbearable to me, bogged down in metaphysical nonsense and character relationships that feel artificial and forced. I hate to use this turn of phrase, but it really is essentially a bad fanfic now. I feel like it's a vehical for fangirls and diehard Nomura followers more than anything, with less and less time being devoted to an actual plot and more and more time being devoted to long, confusing monologues about Darkness/Light/Hearts/etc.
Have you played Birth by Sleep? I loved that game, it really felt like the series was going back to it's roots.

Wait, how come I don't see any Dragon Age posts? I mean, I liked 2 but I'm still surprised given how much bitching that game caused.

Anyway, I'm going with Bioshock. For now anyways. The sequel made me bored of Rapture for giving me too much of the same (and also by pulling a new storyline from their rectal area). I do hope that Infinite is able to redeem the series though, since I did love the first one.

Because DA isn't much of a series (yet).
Not much to love, before it gets ruined.

Wow, after reading this thread, I'm surprised so many people say Final Fantasy. Well, I'm not that surprise. I loved the franchise. Still do. I guess a lot of it is based in the hate for Final Fantasy XIII which I actually enjoyed, but go figure. And I loved Final Fantasy XII for that matter as well, though none of the games will beat FF VI or FF IX. Also, I have high hopes for the rest of the Final Fantasy XIII sequels/spinoffs.

I haven't got a PSP, but I've been wanting to play Birth by Sleep based solely on the good things I've heard about it. If it's closer to the original game than the other sequels have been, it'll go a long way toward restoring my faith in the franchise, but until I get the chance to play it for myself, my expectations for KHIII remain firmly at rock bottom.

Final Fantasy. What the fuck happened guys?
they fired sakaguchi thats what happened MISTWALKER FOR LIFE
Ninja'd, and Ninja'd!

Wayneguard, Here's what happened...

In the aftermath of the financial disaster that was Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, Square placed the majority of the blame at the feet of Hironobu Sakaguchi (the original creator and godfather of the Final Fantasy series). Sakaguchi "resigned" from Square around the same time as the Enix merger. Enix was wary about the merger because of the Square's huge financial setback from The Spirits Within and it's been speculated that Sakaguchi's "resignation" from Square was a requirement for Enix to agree to the merger.

So the father of Final Fantasy left, Square became Square-Enix, and the core Final Fantasy series started to lose its magic FAST.

Sakaguchi founded his own studio called Mistwalker which has put out Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, and a small handful of other games not yet released anywhere but Japan. I've played FFXII and FFXIII; XII was mildly disappointing, but still decent in my book, and XIII is the most disappointing game I've ever played in my life. I've also played Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey; both of these games are incredibly solid releases and feel more "Final Fantasy" than anything that Square-Enix has made.

Coincidence? I think not.

pretty much this lol, except I actually liked XIII better than XII myself, not sure why

Seconded, i think X was the last good FF game and even that was a little iffy
Did I mention that the last core series game that Sakaguchi worked on was FFX? Technically he contributed to FFXI as well, but his contribution to XI was much smaller and most followers of the series don't count XI as a "main series" game.

True, but Bioware is obviously intending to make it a full-blown series, given how much side products have been made (including books, a tabletop RPG etc) and the cliffhanger-y ending of 2.

I'm going to have to go with the Warcraft series as well.

Up until Warcraft 3, the lore was rich, the gameplay elements made sense, and it was entertaining to progress through which added even more incentive. However, even since the rise of the multi-billion dollar monster, the quality in the games have sunk. Of course, it's expected since they're trying to cater to the individuals who'd rather have online play.

But hey, I know what you're probably thinking, World of Warcraft and the Warcraft series are on completely different grounds. Yes, that is true, yet the lore isn't. WoW is still a continuation from here the third installment left off. Blizzard simply decided to continue explaining their "lore", which they're doing horribly at. But the idea of being able to majestically incorporate lore into an online game seems difficult to me considering the fact that no one is there to read, study, or listen to anything that would prove to be lengthy or require some form of previous knowledge regarding the earlier segments of the series.

Here's where we are at now.

Dragon comes and fucks shit up, people get pissed, they're all now on a hunt to kill him in order to prevent the destruction of their homeland. Nothing complicated.

Command and Conquer.
That series was ruined when EA got their dirty claws into it.
Right up until C&C3 it was witty, immersive and fun, then it got turned into a "streamlined", "revolutionary" RTS with far too much emphasis on online play, and its "All Star Cast" was incredibly meh.
Seriously EA, you disgust me.

*barely concealed fanboy rage*

Okay I'm acting all sweet and friendly on the outside but for all you people who have hated on Halo let it be known that I am stewing with anger on the inside and am intent on bloody retribtutution...

*Smiles innocently *

Anyway now that the ugliness is out of my system let's talk serious:

Honestly, Fable. The first Fable was great, no masterpiece but it functioned well, it was well paced and the world felt appealling enough. It was fun to play, it had a decent length and I had fun playing it.
But then Fable 2 came along and, I don't know... too much changed. The way you used magic was different, there wasn't as big a selection of weapons, character customization was too difficult, there wasn't any real difficulty given that you couldn't die, the dog just seemed like a pointless addition.
Basically they put greater work into the features I didn't care about and did nothing or worse allowed to rot all the things that I loved about the game. Hence it's been harder and harder to actually enjoy Fable as a series now.
That said, it has got great voice talents.

Oh dear God, Medal of Honor. Those games are so amazing, but their last two in the series... I mean, they used to be so realistic; now there's Nazi supersoldiers carrying Mg-42's that take 4 .30-06 rounds to the face before they even flinch, there's hyperrealistic call of duty clone mixed with BC2. Dear God, they used to be so good.

The Spyro series. They took a perfectly good series and tried to make it "epic" thus upsetting fans everywhere. (And don't get get me started on the upcoming game.)

Crash Bandicoot and Spyro.

And no it isn't just the nostalgia, the latest games really are shit.
The PS2 ruined both of those games. Actually scrap that, not being made by Insomniac ruined Spyro and I have no idea what happened to Crash.

Obligatory spyro and crash bandicoot mention.

I've got to go with halo.

I loved the halo trilogy and even ODST, because they did things differently to a lot of other FPS's. But then reach came out. I was really disappointed to find that a lot of the things I hate about other FPS's had been put into my beloved halo.

It's still a fun game but it's just not the same.

Fallout, without a doubt. Even if it's the fucknuggets at Bethesda that ruined it rather than Black Isle/Obsidian, it was still killed by "itself", sort of.

I'm going to say Sonic because of how the series went stagnant/bad after Sonic Heroes since Sonic Team became incompetent and I've lost pretty much most, if not all, interest in the games at that point.

There's a very logical reason for that. Namely the original developer stopped creating Spyro games after Year of the Dragon.

Anyway my pick is Tomb Raider. Again very simple reason, different developer.
