I am pretty sure someone has caught themselves ,at one point in time, playing a minigame in a game. But then there are those moments when you realized, you've spent more time in the minigame than the actual game.

What games have you caught yourself doing this very action?

My current exploits would be Pokemon X and Pokemon Amie. I think I spend more of my playtime in there then I do the actual game.

Fable 2 and the woodcutting, since you reminded me. My hero, clad in amazing decadent clothing, and amazing Will tattoos. Spent a lot of time working in bars and woodcutting. And then it occurred to me in those moments, "aren't I suppose to be saving the world? all well gotta serve this gent some beer"

Well I know I played way more Blitzball in the original Final Fantasy X than I should have, even though I never won the special prize the whole thing is there for. But what can I say, I loved to dominate the game. The only team who ever stood a chance against me were the Luca Goers, but even they couldn't stop me until I reached the end of my 70-80 game win streak my great team had given me.

Gummi Ship missions and building stuff in the Kingdom Hearts games was pretty fun back in my early teens, slapping all the lasers and guns I could onto whatever ship looked the coolest at the time. There were a bunch of cool gummi ship segments in the optional missions too, so it was totally worth the hours spent in there.

Fable II and my Beer serving, I dunno why but i did love serving beers long into the night till the crack of daawn, going back to bowerstone market to spent my hard earned coin on new furniture and then going to bed for a few hours before going out on one of my many adventures, but then I kept coming back to pour a few more of those "perfect" pints =P.

Honestly though I loved Fable II's mini games, Fable III's not so much but I also loved occasionally playing fetch with my dog, I've yet to have a companion like that in a non Fable RPG game that retains the same feel for me.

And now I'm sads because I no longer have a 360 and really want to play my copy of Fable II, I do have some dosh saved up and my friends did say I should grab a new 360 to play with them more often annnnd I have more friends that still play both 360 and a PC so maybe it's worth going back to grab a new slim model and jumping back into Bowerstone =D.

Fable 2 despite the way it was heading, I still aprreciated it the most. Fable 3 was just a sad sad sad disgrace. And tbh, even though Peter M was not the best person in the world, without him Fable will just continue to go down hil. Alas we will never get a good game that was as good as the first Fable.

But I digress.

I actually got really damn good at the woodcutting. Not so much the beer pouring, but the woodcutting. I was a woodcutting god. Surely the antagonist of the game must fear my woodcutting skills for they were legendary.

Fable II was pretty much my 2nd 360 console game I'd bought when I got into the console those years ago, it had a good charm with me and although it felt weird in some areas it was still an enjoyable game, I actually loved pouring those pints, hearing people congratulate me whenever I did something good for them, hearing people talk about others in town, it kinda felt alive for me at the time.

I'd agree on FIII though, I had a little bit of fun but overall the menus were annoying and the save the world but fuck everyone over part really tore me silly, I just couldn't bring mself to care for what I;d strived for in the end, it felt so stupid compared to Fable II where you could replay the game up to 3 times for 3 different outcomes and different play styles, I did love the slightly more open exploration though, I would still love for a Fable II remake with more exploration to be had.

Also the ability to buy a bar, work in it and hire people to do it for me when I feel lazy/ wish to redeco the town and place =P.

Also still love me some Fable II tunes

I certainly didn't play it more than the actual game, but I generally really enjoyed Triple Triad in FF8. If it existed as a more fleshed out not in FF8 version, I would have totally played that probably just as much as I did FF8 itself.

Duke Nukem Forever is just a pinball machine to me.

In all seriousness I really can't think of one besides the obvious Mario Party joke.

"Gambling" in Pokemon Ruby/Emerald... It's like I have the "golden touch" whenever I play the Poke-slot machine...

Honorable mention to when I'm playing Birth By Sleep's "Fortune Street" minigame... I spend more hours playing that than actually going to the first world of whichever character I'm playing during that playthrough...

Swoop racing and pazaak in the KOTOR games, not more hours then I've put into those games, but still more than I care to admit.

Pazaak is like a sci-fi blackjack, its a pretty cool game and it's not like you can do anything better with the ingame money anyway (shops don't sell anything worth shit). It's gambling, but without the consequences!

Swoop racing is just a pretty decent racing game, hell with some tweaking it could stand as it's own game.
oh god...all of this. I used to love owning the shit out of the taris race, I'd restart from my previous save and try and get a better time more than I care to admit -_-

OT: Witcher 1 and 2 and the dice rolling poker type game,

the dice game in witcher 1. that was actually a lot of fun
damn you! right when I was about to post and I see someone beat me to it!

The music for the mini-game though was very enjoyable (at least I enjoyed it, witcher 1 was good but I enjoyed 2 better)

surprisingly I couldn't find the little tune for it online anywhere..so I used this lets play of it...not even the name of it! if anyone knows it, please let me know :)

I played a whole lot of that card game in Rage. I never did manage to collect all the cards, but I put together a deck good enough to reliably beat the hardest deck the game could throw at me.

Also, if you count the hacking minigame in the first BioShock, I've done that way too many times. It's semi-necessary, so I don't know if I can count it as a sidetracking minigame, but I do tend to hack every single thing in the game.

Edit: I just remembered, the last time I played Mass Effect 3, I finished the Citadel DLC section and then spent hours goofing around on the Silversun Strip, playing Relay Defense and Shattered Eezo, and mastering the Armax Arsenal Arena. Man, that's a great piece of content.

Yakuza series, the King of all mini games in a game. Even the arcade games were awesome. I don't care if it ends up not getting a plat. I'm not going to learn how to get good at go >.<

I definitely spent more time raising a perfect chocobo in FF7 than I did beating the actual game. Not sure if that counts as a minigame or not, but I'd say it fits the parameters.

As much as I loved the first Fable I wish it would have been what we were promised to begin with. Worst thing about Peter M is that he under-delivers so hard that even good games by him are overshadowed with "Why the fuck didn't we get x?"

OT: Chocobo racing and breeding in FF7 since I was obsessed with getting KOTR, Blitzball in FFX because it was a hella lot of fun.
