That one album that completely fried your brainbox

We're all different people (well most of us are) and we all have our own opinion on the bountiful gift that is music. That opinion is secondary here i.e. subjectivity shall be honoured.

With that in mind, what was that ONE ALBUM for you? You know the one I mean. The one that you made you sit blot upright. The one that made you say something along the lines of "goodgollygosh". The one that, as the thread title implies, fried your proverbial grey matter. I'm talking life-changing.

For me, it would be TWO (that's right, I'm pretentious enough to have two).

The first one was From Enslavement To Obliteration by Napalm Death, which I purchased when I was about fourteen years old. I bought it completely at random, having no idea of the concept of grindcore before this, and MY GOD. Seriously. Off the hook.

The second was Lift Yr. Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven by Godspeed You! Black Emperor. I shan't prattle on about the merits of this work of freaking art, needless to say that the second movement of the track Sleep damn near moved me to tears.

So, fellow Escapologists, what was That One Album for you? Do tell...

I never buy albums i only download mixed tracks from various singers or bands. But if i piece together my favourite songs from one particular artist who has recently opened my eyes to life i would have to say:

Most recently it has to be Kalmah's For The Revolution, it is everything that CoB's Something Wild was and better.

But the most impactful was Wintersun, the band/self-titled album, though I don't listen to it as much anymore.

The Mars Volta - Frances the Mute. That album forever changed my perception of music.
Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet. Soon as I heard it I knew PT would be my favorite band forever.
Meshuggah - Nothing. That album forever changed my tastes in metal.

I can really narrow it down to just one but most recently I would have to go with Dark Tranquillity's Haven for how unsurprisingly awesome it is.

My One Album to Fry Them All would have to be The Rising by Bruce Springsteen

That album is so passionate and poignant, and heartbreaking in places. It's a beautiful piece from a great artist.

For me it wasn't an album, it was a concert. Marilyn Manson played a gig in Hamburg in 2001, and because of one certain song (Great Big White World) I resolved to start playing the guitar. I'd call that life-changing. (Mind you I wasn't actually there, at that time I was living 600km away from Hamburg, but luckily there was a live broadcast on MTV that day.)

The other experience I recall that had me going, "... Bwuh?!" was Porcupine Tree's 'Voyage 34', which is a musical representation/interpretation of a collective LSD trip the band went on together.

OH MY GOD. the only thing that could of made that album better was if the song "circles" (by hollywood undead, and if you dont know it GOOGLE IT and listen to it) would of been on it.

its the only album i actually downloaded, listened, went to the store and bought it...TWICE. yea, it was that good. i bought it twice.

The Nightwish album Century Child, blew my freakin' 15 year old mind, the lead singers voice was just beautiful and the back up singer sounded like a hot Finnish gigolo...

Then Enter Shikari's first album came along, Take to the Skies blew my freakin' 20 year old mind. Just awesome track after awesome track with an awesome flow about it.

Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From A Memory by Dream Theater. That album has remained my favorite album of all time since I first heard it. It's so good I can't just listen to one song. I have to hear the entire album.

I can listen to this from beginning to end and I have had this uncanny ability since I got my first copy of this on Cassette tape [I later got the CD] way back in the mid 90's. Ride the Lightning is also excellent but this one indoctrinated me first [though they are both from a mystical time when Metallica was a fucking awesome band WITH NO DISPUTE]

Yes you are!! And good choices. Rust In Peace was one of the first albums I bought with my own money; a fantastic piece of work.

I lived that album when I first heard it. I got completely involved in the story, the references, the clever way the music ties in perfectly with the pace, mood and themes of the plot... At one point I attempted a bit of fan-fic (my first and last attempt) to convert the story into prose. It didn't work out, but I still love that album to this day.

Fear of a black planet - Porcupine Tree. I've heard a lot about this band from uni mates but never listened to them. One day I decided to pick up this album and woah! Everything they said about this band was true. Woah..

Secret house against the world - Buck 65. The first Buck 65 album I heard. I've never heard anything like it. It was Hip Hop, but it wasn't. Changed the way I looked at the genre.

Talkin' Honky Blues - Buck 65. Country + Hip Hop = Mind blown.

More hearts than brains - Bike for three! Buck 65 teams up with Greatings from Tuskan. Alt Eletronica + Hip Hop = Mind blown!
