...that turns a usually-smooth game into complete insanity.
...that just appears out of nowhere and spikes the difficulty so high that you are left speechless wondering WTF just happened.
...that no matter how many times you played the game, makes you his ***** in the first attempt at defeating him.

We all have That One Boss. For me, that's Sephiroth in Kingdom Hearts 2. Never playing the arena area much in KHI, I never faced Sephiroth before. I just come to the end of Hollow Bastion, and this one winged dude is waiting for me. I recognize olde Seph immediatly. The boss battle then begins. I try to attack, he blocks, and one attack from him kills me. Just like that.

I tried time and time again, to defeat him I had to grind to lvl.99, go to a GameFAQ to see what were the most OP moves, and create Ultima by going back and forth to collect the Orchaluims+.

AND EVEN THEN THE SON OF A ***** TOOK 27 TRIES TO KILL.

Uh there's this one boss in Persona 4 who literally turns around and bitchslaps you in the face in I think the third dungeon. It really spikes the difficulty, partly because Black Frost doesn't work against him. Black Frost is stupidly good in the second and third dungeons but he falls off hard after that, think Drake Sword in Dark Souls type falling off. Really good to absolute bollocks in a second.

Ok fine i'll name it but spoilers

Shadow Teddie if you don't realise who i'm going on about. Shadow Rise was deceptively manageable then BOOM FUCK YOU SHADOW TEDDIE IN YOUR FACE!

The Four Kings in Dark Souls.
The second cheapest boss fight in Dark Souls. If you aren't a tank or magic caster you are screwed. The worst part is that even though they have a shared health bar they revive if you don't kill them fast enough making it a dps race.

I saw a comment on youtube that accurately describes the BS of that fight.
"That moment when you find out that there are actually five kings..."

The Harvester from Dragon Age: Origins - Golems of Amgarrak DLC. Granted, the biggest reason the boss is so hard is because of the terrible party you're given for the DLC. Rather than having your regular party from DA:O, you're given two dwarves and a golem, none of them a dedicated healer and one of the two tanks an average tank at best. It shames me to say, but I haven't been able to beat the boss on nightmare yet. I had to turn it down to hard, because I was consistently getting my ass handed to me. I plan to go through the DLC again some day, but with a mage, so I have the option of respeccing to either dedicated healer or Arcane Warrior. We'll see how it goes then, hopefully it'll ease things up a bit.

Ornstein and Smough is another example. I've beat Dark Souls numerous times and done most of the game solo, but these two, despite knowing the mechanics and their abilites very well, is such a pain in the ass. Artorias from the DLC is a worthy example as well, because he's just so damn fast and aggressive. I often see my 20 Estus flasks just dwindle away slowly and him nowhere near dying.

The first playthrough isn't so much an issue, but when NG+ and so on, it's a nightmare.

The previously mentioned Dragonslayer Ornstein and Executioner Smough. For those not in the know, one's a fat guy with a hammer, the other one is a skinny guy with a spear. One knocks the player around like a ragdoll, the other zooms around because he's Speedy Gonzales, the fastest mouse in all of Mexico. They fight you both at the same time and have no respect for concepts like "fighting fairly". If you kill one, congratulations! The remaining guy absorbs his dead friend's power, gets back full health, and enters a super mode where he's either a giant or farts lightning bolts.

Also, Flamelurker. Because seriously, that guy sucks.

After he killed my Dante and Uber-Pixie for second time I was ready to give up, but I've decided to punch him just one more time. That was it. Here, take your shitty TRUE DEMON ENDING, sure that was worth it!

Yeah the four kings make the "block and be careful" approach go to fuck.

I'm on NG+ and it's ALOT harder than the first time I fought them ....

I disagree . Once you get through , the amala labyrinth , you are immune to BS for the rest of your playthrough/gaming career. Even more so if you do it on hard mode . But does that really count? Since he's basically a " secret boss" , there no difficulty spike . You go through the rage enducing labirinyh , fight baal and a bunch of bs bosses , then continue into the final dungeon ( which is piss easy in comparaison) then fight the final boss and all his forms .

OT: i want to say Elizabeth from Persona 3 , but she is a secret boss also so i won't count her , instead i'll choose the final boss from SMT: Strange journey . Good luck surviving the final boss and her final form , even at max level that boss is NOT easy . And she can still kill you in one turn if you are unlucky .

I'm immune to everything but Almighty, and that ************ got a whole lot of almighty attacks! The problem with Luci is that battle with him goes right after Kagutsutchi and you don't even have time to grind a little more or even prepare team composition.

I recall having a lot of trouble with one of the last few bosses of White Knight Chronicles 2. Once I went back and got some better equipment and prepared a bit it was still tough but doable. Now there are bosses that are much much harder, but this one just caught me off guard compared to how easy the rest of the game was. I recall WKC1 being extremely easy...WKC2 was almost as easy until this boss.

The original Devil May Cry.

The smarter lads among you may have noticed I didn't mention a specific boss, and that's because while I found the standard enemies challenging, but entertaining, I never beat a single boss in that game in less than ten tries.

The Four Kings in Dark Souls new game plus were a ***** and a half to deal with. Eventually, after what seemed like a dozen or so tries, I found that if you get right in their faces, their sword do about half as much damage as they normally would. Not sure why, but I was all too happy to take advantage of that.

Loads of Fighting game bosses fit into this category but the two most annoying for me were Seth in SF4 where I could only beat him on normal with my mains forcing me to either play on easy if I wanted to havea chance with a new character im not familiar with or just play to him and reset or change character on normal and above. I just couldnt stand his design and ripoff fighting style and his stupid laugh as he correctly guesses the way you werent blocking again and again as he mixes you up and combos you to death aslo he has insane priority it seems when the comp controls him on his moves.

Other one was Alpha152 in DoA 4 where you had to face her at the end of every arcade and time trial again no problem with my mains but otherwise its one mistake and boom half your health gone she could literally kill you in two hits if she wanted or she could troll and hit you with 16 hit combos that would do the same damage as one of those big hits.

SNK is also notorious for ridiculous bosses but the above two are the ones that stand in my mind as terrible bosses they were so bad they actually stopped me playing the game because I disliked them so much. Thankgod DOA5 dosent make the same mistake and there are no bosses outside of story mode more should follow this example imo.

All the time I've sunk into White Knight Chronicles is rendered worthless when Dinivas shows up to help Brimflamme. The game's relatively normal until the Brimflamme battle. The whole area right before the fight can be gone through at like, level 45. I'm now level 58 and STILL can't beat fuckin' Brimflamme + Dinivas. Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck these guys.

Most recently it was the sanctuary guardian in Dark Souls. I hate that thing so much. It was strong against the build I was using and I couldn't find anyone to summon so I was on my own.

The only boss that gave me that much trouble before would probably be Yunalesca from Final Fantasy X.

the Divine Dragon's soul in Legend of Dragoon.

In the 4th disc, you go to the destroyed Winglie city of Mayfil, also called "The Death City" where the Winglies funnel the souls of the world to their ultimate judgement, which . . . by all indications is hell. During your trip there, you fight pretty much every dragon you fought previously in the game. Including the Divine Dragon. Except this time around, you don't have plot items to take out two of it's weapons and make the fight fair, and it's also scaled to a much higher level too, so you're at a HUUUUUGE disadvantage. Not to mention, chances are if you got this far, you're like I am and are ever ready for the sometimes impossible to be ready for boss fights and thus NEVER use dragoon form unless you know it's an important story boss. Since each of these fights are optional, basically being the choice of "freeing" the souls of the dragons or letting the dragons' souls all be funneled directly into Hell. (I guess the Winglies were so convinced of their own superiority they wanted to ensure Heaven had NO ONE ELSE in it.)

Gods on high how hard that fight is. Just . . . dammit . . . dammit Divine Dragon, and dammit Lloyd! stealing things he has no damn right to.
