That one genre you will always HATE

Because I am not above blatantly ripping off and diametrically opposing other threads, let's take a moment to ponder on those genres that will always be relegated to the coldest, blackest, most reviled corners of our hearts.

For me, it's bullet hell games. They're nothing but a frustrating clusterfuck of particles arranged in the most UNFAIR formations possible that you can only learn to navigate through trial and error. There's no difficulty curve, it just goes from "Hey, time your dodges and watch out for the warnings before big attacks and you're good" to "You'd better just sit down and memorize the formations and stages because there's no way in hell to strategize or anticipate ANYTHING." When the upper end of your difficulty curve requires clairvoyance, you know the balance in your game is nonexistant.

I used to also hate tower defense games, but Plants VS Zombies won a warm place in my heart. I guess what I found different about it was the pace wasn't so breakneck and I constantly had a good idea of where I stood. I played Sanctum once for like 19 minutes but I just felt like I couldn't SEE everything I had and I couldn't tell the difference between all the enemies. So it seems there is at least one tower defense game out there for me (and soon to be two when PVZ2 comes out!).

So Escapists, what is that one genre that just always makes your blood boil, without exception?

Captcha: Cross the rubicon. I feel like that's a reference to something...but I don't know what it is.

Tower defense games for me. They all lack orignality due to the limitations of the gameplay mechanics, and they seem to be the most recent "go-to" genre for developers looking to make a quick game and a quick buck. Mostly, though, I just can't stand playing them.

MOBAs are another genre I hate, if only because of the vitriolic communities that spring up around those types of games.

Post-apocalypse wasteland/desert games. Fallout usually gets praised, but I find myself not really wanting to replay anything due to how boring the environments are. I just got done ranting about Rage and it's funny I ever thought it would be fun since Mad Max type themes/settings always struck me lazy and boring storytelling. 2009's Red Faction: Guerrilla also failed with this...as if making the location Mars would hide the fact that is plays like the future release Rage, but without any of the gimmicks.

As of now, military shooters. I've come across all different kinds of shooting games that I've enjoyed, be it for the story or for the unique gameplay, but I've yet to find a military shooter that I enjoyed even slightly.

Hate is a strong word. I don't think there is any video game I really HATE. MOBA style games like League of Legends and Dota 2 might come the closest in terms of instilling hate inside of me, but that is because it is solely based on the community. While I enjoy the Dota 2 game for what it is, I sometimes HATE playing it. So I won't count that.

I think I would say MMO's are my least favorite genre. Kind of for the same reason as MOBA style, but with more reasons. I get really bored in them quickly for some reason, I don't like having to look for a group to go into a dungeon, I don't like not being able to name my character what I want to because the name might be taken, ect, ect, the list goes on. I am very much a casual gamer, so I like to just have fun and to take my time. I still sometimes think about getting into another MMO, but ehhh.

Online RTS games are another genre I don't like. I like playing single player, but the online aspects always stress me out too much. Although I played Halo 2/3/Reach pretty hardcore in my day. I think shooters I am most comfortable playing online because I am best at them.

MOBAs. Only one I've played is League, and though I have a twisted relationship with it as I love it because awesome moments keep me coming back to it, I also hate it because it is so full of shit. Since I haven't played any other MOBAs yet it would be pretty unfair to condemn the genre based on one game, but if it is indeed more or less reflective of the genre as a whole than MOBA's are a hideous genre.

Not so much a genre, but post-apocalyptic settings bore the hell out of me. There's so much that could be done with them, Metro for one is proof of that, but the majority appear to be straightforward modern day nuclear/zombie holocaust in a ruined city with the odd regional area adventure RPG. I was going though Kickstarter the other day and more than half of the recent adventure type games I'd come across appeared to fall into this.
Why not post-apocalyptic Medieval, or post-apocalyptic futuristic? Why not a post-apocalyptic RTS or vehicle-based game. The post-apocalyptic concept itself is brilliant and there's a lot of potential in it but we seem to be seeing the same take on it over and over again.

Sports, I guess. I have a rather strong dislike of sports in the real world, so you can only imagine my feelings of sports in video games. It's one of the only genres I'll never be willing to try.

I don't think there are any genres I will absolutely refuse to play, ever, but I will never, ever give one single red cent for a modern cover based shooter. They are just boring to me, they feel so slow paced. I like fast, arcadey shooters or open world shooters that give me freedom of approach. I know, I know, squad based have tactical depth or something, but I just don't care. The core mechanic bores me. I've played CoD with a friend when I was over at his house and we were waiting for the guests to arrive for a party, but that's about it. And CoD can actually play fast sometimes, on some maps.

I don't HATE any particular genre. I get bored very quickly with a sports game though, any sports game. I have just one copy in case I suddenly contract friends and that's all they want to play. Other than that, no sports games whatsoever - closely followed by racing games.

FPS for me. I get motion sickness from them, so it's a non starter. I did play old school FPS like Quake back in the day, but as soon as you could look up and down it killed me. I'm also not interested in them because I love storyline, and many (not all) don't have the amount of story I'm looking for.

I guess I could say sports games as well, but since I'm not at all a sports fan I don't even notice them. I don't hate them, I just know they aren't for me.

It's not hate, but one genre I've almost consistently never had any interest in is sim-type racing games.

Closes I may have got was Need For Speed Underground back on the gamecube.
But aside from that it's really really not for me.

Oh and RTS too, most certainly. But that's only because I'm 100% proficient at sucking eggs while playing them.

The FPS genre holds no special place in my heart to be honest. Is because I suck at them, no it's because I just can't enjoy them. Mainly because I'm the kind of person that loves stories in his games and I love a wide open area. There are a few exceptions to me not liking the FPS genre, but overall I don't like FPS games, mainly military shooters.

Sports games, I'll die before I'm forced to play modern foot ball, basket ball, base ball, soccer, and even racing games. the press X to win interactive movies are just as bad.

That's a joke, yes? I know nothing about history and even I know that one... though that may partially be because I took four years of Latin... >.> I wish it were better possible to interpret tone over the internet.

OT: Nothing so strong as 'hate' (I feel like a broken record repeating that in these types of threads), but there are certainly genres that I rarely find myself seeking out and enjoying.

Real-Time Strategy is a primary example. I'm enjoying my time with Starcraft, but I'm playing it for the story before I move on to Starcraft II, and making liberal use of cheat codes that grant tons of extra resources so I don't need to manage my build order and mining quite so stringently. Practically every other RTS, with the sole exceptions of the RTS/4X game Sins of a Solar Empire and Warcraft III, I've gotten bored of or infuriated at after an hour or two. I would like to make a distinction between strategy and tactical games, though--I quite like the micromanagement aspects of Starcraft, and as such enjoy games that don't focus quite so heavily on base-building and resource management.

Fighting games are another example; Mostly because I'm terrible at them. Just the worst. I have fun with Super Smash Bros. (I was actually quite good at Melee some five or six years ago), and adore BlazBlue for the purely insane story, but the only fighting game I've ever been able to wrap my head around controls-wise were the Dragonball Z Budokai games, everything else tends to fly right over my head when it comes to combos and chains and breaks and supers and I don't even know what else.

Racing games tend to bore me more often than not as well, though I can't really determine what a deciding factor is in whether I'd like them or not... I like WipeOut, Mario Kart, Star Wars Episode 1 Racer, Need for Speed Hot Pursuit (the original two and the remake), I liked Sonic Riders of all things back in the day, and I imagine I would like Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing if I played it, but every time I see a racing game I just get overwhelming feelings of "Eh..."

Oh, wait, I've got one, though I suppose it's more of a sub-genre than anything else. Sandboxes. Never have I enjoyed a game because it was an open-world sandbox, and I find that particular quality tends to be one of the first things that will render me bored with a title if it doesn't otherwise wow me somehow.

There are no genres that I really "hate", just some that I enjoy less than others. Sandboxes tend to bore me, just like any kind of serious simulations. Other than that I pretty much enjoy all of them.
Although, there's one setting that I just freaking hate! It's 40-60s or whatever Mafiosi America. HAAAATE IT. Hate games in that setting, hate movies in that setting, hate TV shows in that setting.

Huh... I was prepared to come here and say fighting games, but then again, I feel the same for sports, racing (although I like some, F-zero was awesome), simulators and bullet hell games. I don't really hate any genre, just, really, really dislike them. I suppose it's really any game that's supposed to be realistic and/or frustrating that tends to rub me the wrong way.
