Have you ever just been going along in a horror game, and something so incredibly creepy happens that chills run down your spine right away and you just know something bad will happen soon?
For me, I was playing the Path -- I was meandering around the playground with the Girl in White, and suddenly these words were put on screen.
'Wolves are just dogs, but werewolves are like people.'
FFFFFFUCK ME SIDEWAYS.
I don't even know why that scared me so much -- I think it's just because it showed me more than I'd like to know. I literally got started on the thread after that happened, because of the chills that ran down my spine, and thus I want to know if anything similar happened to you lot.

I don't have such a vivid example but the first Dead Space did that to me a lot. You just knew that something was always going to happen, that every corridor would hide montruous things and would scare the living crap out of you! So, yes and no. Yes i know the feeling and no, I never had an experience exactly as yours. I will give that game a try though!

I'd definitely suggest it. The ambience is brilliant in the game, there was more than one occasion I'd be walking and the ambience would scare me so much I started sprinting - I thought something was chasing me.

I remember that incredibly frightening moment in first F.E.A.R.
<youtube=Fo7HA7Y89XI>
I screamed like a little girl. Twice. And unlike the guy in a video once I saw Alma I jumped from the ladder and immediately turned around...

Not exactly a thing like you describe, OP, but one of horror games' biggest "Oh, fuck." moments was in Silent Hill 4. I had just again returned from the dimension of unspeakable horrors to the name-giving The Room only to find out that the unspeakable horrors had started to creep into the real world, my previously safe haven. Plopp - the sound of the clump of fear sitting in my stomach doubling in size.

When you fight the ghost kids in PREY, they run towards you if you get close. That's some really scary stuff when you're not expecting.

My nerves were replaced with pig iron and my tear ducts were burned out with flashbangs.
I no longer experience the emotion known as "fear" and am incapable of experiencing a state of startlement.

But this one time I played Call of Pripyat and went out for a trip to some anomaly fields in Zaton during nighttime. Needless to say, it ended up being my first encounter with a chimera. Which at the time I wasn't aware existed (being a new addition to the STALKER series).
So I'm just strolling along happily in the dark, with my torch the only source of illumination, then I hear this sorta mix between a bear and a lion roaring. Then something swipes me from behind. I panic and sprint forward, and the fucker jumps after me and bites my head off. I had no idea what the fuck just happened and my heart pretty much jumped out through my ribcage.
Good times.

The Regenerator in Dead Space, the one that can re-grow limbs.
After freaking out because it's a necromorph I can't kill, I dash into the next room thinking I'm safe. Then he busts in through a vent. I run into the next room. He busts in again.
I had the most helpless sense of "nowhere is safe" from that freaking encounter.

Other than him, the bear from Condemned 2.
Man, he never gets old.

The worst part is the ************ comes BACK in BOTH sequels :( In 2 it's near the very end so it's not too bad but in 3 he shows up EVEN EARLIER THAN IN THE FIRST ONE so I was basically running around making gross sobbing noises as I tried to get away from the damn thing.

Even riding the train to another area didn't save me ;;
Yeah I haven't picked up Dead Space 3 for a while because of that...

Oh, jeez. Cry of Fear.

I was playing the Co-op with three other friends for the sixth or seventh time (It's honestly really difficult, so we never made it past halfway), when we finally managed to get to the next area. (We were having trouble fighting a Giant, since we had no ammunition left and only batons.) Now, we had to walk in this creepy abandoned house, expecting monsters to come screaming at us anytime. It was full of tight corridors, spooky crawlspaces and gaps in the ceilings; - A recipe for disaster.

But nothing happened. As such, I took the lead as is normal (Everyone else seems to hang behind me). As we begin to ascend to the second floor, the bloody stair breaks out under me, and I land in a nigh-pitch black basement.

Cue a DOZEN screaming creatures crawling at me, howling and slashing with knives. I was the only one who fell in, so it was a desperate, though short-lived, battle. I managed to shoot one of them with my shotgun, but due to the reload time I had to switch to my glock. Then I tried to run away, but I heard a chainsaw rev up. Some spiky, tall...THING with said chainsaw pops out of nowhere and cuts me in half. Or, well, slashes me and I die, anyways. Still though, it was terrifying.

Oh, and don't get me started on the time I was stuck in a crawlspace with some drooling, blind monstrosity crawling behind me. I couldn't turn around to shoot it, the exit was a ways off, and it moved faster than me...

Only time I've been terrified in a video game. Well, SCP Containment Breach was pretty scary, but nothing else has bothered me.

I still remember the fear that Commander Keen's Dopefish inspired. I had never been truly scared of anything in a video game before that relentless creature began to chase me.

When I first played through Quake 1 back in the day, I remember being scared in this one place where you fall down into a pit of brown water with a bunch of zombies around you.

The first few minutes of the Resident Evil remake for gamecube. It was the first resi I'd played, and was going around going 'There's meant to be zombies. Where's the zombies? Why aren't there any zombies?'
I got myself so worked up I had to turn it off for a good couple of hours before going back to it and finding the first one...

The ending of dead space. The helmet-removal scene.

Alma raping you in Fear 2.

The tyrant in RE1 smashing through a wall chasing you, only to do it again 30 seconds later when you thought you had gotten away.

When you encounter the first licker in RE2, as it crawls across the window.

I was playing System Shock 2 late at night and I was in this tiny room with window behind me. I was fooling around with something and I heard movement and turned around but there wasn't anything I could see so I went back to whatever I was screwing around with. I finished what I was doing and turned around to find a hybrid pressed up against the glass and just silently staring at me without a sound. I immediately quit to desktop and didn't play it for a few days. I have no idea how long he was just there staring at me because I was in that room a while and find that terrifying.

The regenerators in Resident Evil 4. Nothing scared me remotely in the whole game until those things came along. Especially the very first one, where you step out of a door and it's literally standing in front of you, walking towards you with that slow, erratic breathing. If you don't run past it fast enough, you're literally trapped with this slow breathing, seemingly invulnerable thing.

From then on, every time I heard that slow, loud breathing, I'd just freeze and take a long, hard look around. Creeped the shit out of me.

Amnesia

In the sewers, with that one monster just chilling right next to the exit. He was facing away from me, towards the exit. I'm like SHIT.
So I tried to distract him by throwing a rock, but it fell short and didn't go past him. Instead it stopped in between us. He took one look at me and went apeshit.
I almost legitmately shit myself as I'm mashing my keyboard going, "Awshitshitshitshit!" Before he chased me down like... gah.

Not my favorite moment in gaming.
