I've done a few bits and bobs here and there on nearly everything. Watched anime, read some manga, played most style of games including tabletop RPGs.

Won't fucking touch Dr Who though. Only thing worse than Doctor Who is a Doctor Who Fan

Well, there are some things that I've never really had the chance to get into, but I find to be interesting, like tabletop gaming, while other things I just don't really like, such as Doctor Who and most superhero comics.

I'm a part of the comic crowd here. I guess I just never had much exposure to western comics. Even as an otaku, it took me a long time to get into reading manga. So now we have superhero movies and such, but it doesn't really do anything for me. I just wish anime and manga got just as much love here as western comics and superhero movies do. Instead Hollywood wants to turn anything anime/manga related into a white-washed snooze fest. Do Americans hate animation that much?

I never got into comic books.

It's not strictly through a lack of interest - I'm the first to admit that I adore the design of women like Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, X-23 etc - but moreso because of the price tag. You end up paying quite a lot of money for not a lot of content. I could buy a book for less that theoretically should take me longer to read than a comic (but that isn't always strictly true because I'm quite a fast reader).

The overwhelming love for Joss whedon some people seem to have. I enjoyed Buffy, Angel, Firefly and some of the other stuff he has done but really dont understand why he is lauded as some sort of genius.

For all intents and purposes he just writes the same character over and over again with maybe a single gimmick thrown in to make it look different from every other one.

I mean the biggest one is the hero who spouts a suprising amount of comic relief and flits between brooding and life of the party with an audible clunk.

Comics and most Japan stuff.

So I don't even know what a manga is. It's like a fruit though, isn't it?

Most of it, to be honest. Especially the sci-fi, "typical" fantasy settings with dragons and dwarves and so on, lord of the rings, star wars, star trek, american comics (way too hard to get into), mmos, and I could continue, but I think it'd be easier to say what I am into.

Which is mostly manga (and some anime, but it takes too much time to watch it), most kinds of videogames, and forum RPing, which I regard as more writing my part and character of a story than actually "roleplay", seeing as I tend to avoid the ones where the outcome relies on random dice more often than a well-written description of what and why you're doing it. I like the marvel cinematic universe as well, but I don't think that's much of a geek thing, considering how many does. Heck, I'm not sure most videogames count as a geek thing anymore either.

But yeah, I don't exactly feel like much of a "geek", and I certainly don't refer to myself as one.

Lots of Western TV. Doctor Who, Sherlock, Supernatural, Firefly, Game of Thrones, Walking Dead. Stuff like that. Never could get into them. Not even entirely the fandom (though I won't lie, the fandom does bother me. Shippers are almost the #1 most irritating thing I see on the internet). They just don't grab me that much.

Manga I could never really get into. Though that was mainly because physical manga is hard to get where I live and ridiculously expensive. Doesn't have the same feel when reading it online. That was until I found The Voynich Hotel. I could reread that so many damn times.

Comics for me as well. I love all things Superhero both during my childhood in the 90s when we had stuff like Batman TAS, Superman, Justice League, X-men, Spider-man, Fantastic Four and I love the Marvel movies now but comics themselves were never my thing.

There are a few exceptions. I started reading Fables when The Wolf Among Us came out and enjoyed them but I stopped at 52. That is my perfect ending.

I have also read some of the bigger Hellblazier stories which I enjoyed.

Don't let Queen Michael see you say that shit. Haha. Nah I think manga is Japanese anime-illustrated novel things. I think so in any case. I might be completely off the mark. It's got something to do with books though. Books from Japan.

Star Trek, Doctor Who, Game of Thrones, The Big Bang Theory, My Little Pony, Marvel, Agents of Shield and the Star Wars "Expanded Universe". Most anime (there're 5 or 6 exceptions) and comics in general. Graphic novels I can deal with, but the serial kind? Fuck that. Dungeons & Dragons, role-playing board games and LARPing, Warcraft, LOL and MMOs in general.

Also YA fantasy series like Dresden Files. It's an awful little niche from which it's very difficult to crawl out once you're in, I think.
As a fan of Dresden Files can I ask why you don't like them? I don't think you are wrong, everyone has the right to their opinion, I would just be interested in knowing.

First and foremost I avoid series in general. If your story can go on for 3 to 15 entries, I'm not interested.

The first book was lauded as "Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Philip Marlowe", and Joss Whedon doesn't cut it for me. His brand of humor of "every character is sarcastic and speaks with the deadpan sensibility of a teenage girl" is too infantile for me and has been played out thousands of times. And "Wizard P.I." sounds like one of those badass concoctions Americans love to toss around half-joking, half-serious, like "robot ninja" or "zombie pirate". I can enjoy such frivolities on webcomic-level, but even Dr. McNinja and Axe Cop ended up boring me with their lolwut. And why waste my time with something I don't respect or won't commit to on any profound level? I'm not saying I WILL NEVER READ A DRESDEN BOOK, but I will always have something better to read at hand, so it's very unlikely.

I guess My Little Pony, card games of any non-poker variety (I'm mainly referring to Magic and it's offspring, and Pokemon card games- that's a thing, right?), and comics were never really my things. I also don't really care about the new shows based on Marvel stuff- really don't give a toss for any superhero stuff, I guess. I also didn't really like/get into Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

I liked Star Wars before it became more than three movies, and I was REALLY into Doctor Who before it became modern- I still like it, but I liked the older stuff more, but I'm willing to admit it might be nostalgia.

Though I'm not a huge Star Trek fan by any stretch, I was turned off of Star Trek after the original series/the first six movies (Next to 2 of course, my favourite Trek movie is the one where they shot God in the face. Mainly because they shoot God in the face, with a Klingon Bird of Prey... blaster, or something. I think it was five. or six. The one without the whales, or the Hunt for Red October with Klingons. There- that should give you an idea of the depth of my involvement with the franchise.)

I know there may or may not technically be a "Geek/nerd culture" so to speak, since it's so diverse now, but I needed a title. Sorry.

I recently visited a buddy of mine and he told me that he really was getting into comics. He showed me some of newer ones he bought and was telling me the parts he really liked. I just didn't get it. It's cool that he was so into it, but I just couldn't share the enthusiasm.

There's too much about the comic medium that I just can't get into. Especially the Super Hero ones or topics even tangentially related to them. The stories seem so complex and convoluted. I wouldn't even know where to start reading them. Then there's the issue of paying for them. I feel like I wouldn't be getting enough value of compulsively buying these comics only to read them then do nothing. Not to mention the amount of retconning could turn the events in those issues meaningless. Then there's the art, which is just kinda... strange. It's hard to explain. This is overly nitpicky, I'm aware, but I'm not a fan of how some pages have one or two small frames then a HUGE frame playing out a dramatic punch or whatever.

For me, couldn't get into comics.

Runner up: Anime

What about you? What part of geek/nerd culture did you never penetrate? Certain genres of games? MOBAS? Fighting games? What about books like Tolkien and Rothfus? Maybe you took a pass on the latest crazy fandom like MLP, Dr. Who, or SuperWhoLock? Not into the new "popular" stuff like Walking Dead or Game of Thrones?

it being a culture. it was just an insult the popular kids used on us social rejects when i was a kid. now its some mainstream identity and a culture people choose to belong to.

Fair enough. I can understand where you are coming from. For what it's worth the writing and characters do get better after the 2nd book. the 1st Dresden was Jim Butchers first book after all. Plus he never really refers to himself as a P.I, he has a lisence so he can work with the police but he simply advertises himself as a Wizard. He is even in the phonebook under w.

But like I said we are all entitled to our opinnions so I would never claim you are wrong. It is actually quite nice to see someone who looked at something properly and then decided it was not for them as opposed to simply declaring they don't like something without knowing anything about the thing in the first place. Seem to be encountering alot of people like that recently.

Quoting Queen Michael here because the Escapist forum system is being buggy right now and won't let me quote people.

"And if you want a good superhero novel, I recommend Soon I Will Be Innvincible by Austin Grossman."

I second this recommendation, it's a very good book, and a fun deconstruction of comic book superhero tropes and myth-building. It's also really damn funny and an enjoyable read.

Queen Michael ---
"No worries. I make sure to check out every superhero novel I see, but this is the only one that seemed good enough to be worth reading. Someday I'll have to read another one"

I would recommend the Young Adult novel series by Brandon Sanderson (author of the Way of Kings, Stormlight Archive series)- The Steelheart Saga. It's an awesome book series so far, and is actually really damn funny. Basic premise is a lot like Heroes, or Rising Stars (the JMS comic story). A big light appears in the sky, and suddenly lots of people have superpowers. The twist....every...single..one of them, is a supervillain. So now it's a world of normals, versus a world of meglamaniacal supervillains, with a superiority complex and a tendency to vaporize people who mildly annoy them. The story follows a group of normals who are fighting the "Epics", and trying to find out their kryptonites so they can kill them, (cause very Epic has a weakness, it's just built in) The book series is great, and has been one of my most recent happy purchase when it comes to literature. Highly recommend it.

OT: For me I guess I would have to put comics into that category too. I even used to work in a comic shop back in the 90s, and I barely could be bothered to read any of them, they were all so similar. I also don't get The Big Bang Theory, though nerds/geeks might state the show isn't actually part of "geek culture", but it seems to be really fucking popular, and I just find it annoying and offensive as hell.

Huh, anime seems to be a popular choice for this topic

If people need help, just ask me or any of the anime fans and we can introduce you to some shows.

OT: it's related to anime but is more specific: the fanservice and slife of life shows. I can never understand the psychology behind the fans of shows like To-Love Ru or High School of the Dead. If I want tits and ass, I can find xetabytes of it on the net, I don't need to be dragged by the nose around for the chance of it that will either come with no impact due to circumstance or just the amount of content shown or we get nothing and continually get dragged around. If it's supposed to be funny, i genuinely don't see the humor of a faceplant or grope since they are so overplayed that i can just mark time. I really don't understand the appeal

A similar thing applies to slice of life though I am working towards understanding. Most shows feel like they are just superficially cute with no real character or are just boring with no dramatic tension. When Supernatural Battles Become Commonplace is the only one I really like now because the characters bounced off each other nicely while having an overarching conflict.

Card games such as Magic, Netrunner, YuGiOh, etc.

The problem is however that I think I'd like them if I took the time to get my head around them. Every previous time I've tried though I've just felt daunted by the sheer amount out there coupled with the potential cost.

The superhero scene too; be it films, comics, cartoons - whatever - I just can't really buy into them.

I consider myself fairly open-minded when it comes to fandoms, but I always found the obsession with MLP stupid and juvenile. This is coming from someone who enjoyed Powerpuff Girls and Foster's Home of Imaginary Friends.
