Shotgun. It works in Left 4 Dead, it works in Team Fortress 2, and it works in Half-Life 2. How can you go wrong? Now if only I could put it into mario galaxy...
Old Melee Weapon: The flanged mace - say farewell to thy teeth, knaves!
Present Melee: Pigsticker knives - It's true that everything is better with bacon involved.
Future: I guess it'd be a taser - non lethal takedowns always impress.

Present Projectile Weapon: M4 Carbine - they look nice.
Future Projectile Weapon: The OICW - it has everything on it apart from a kitchen sink.

Shotguns! Pick any one. I find it very difficult to get on with an FPS if they have a rubbish shotgun (or, shock horror, don't have one!)
Most recently, Borderlands impressed me with the shotguns I had at my disposal. The one that fired rockets was fun yet pretty useless, but I finished the game with some beast that did monstrous damage, fire elemental, and because of my levelups held 8 shells and reloaded super-quick.

Past Melee: I'll take a Zweihander please. Large, crushy, and generally nasty.
Present Melee: A large kitchen knife will do me just fine in close range, but for general utility, the crowbar rules all.
