Oh jeez... Let me count the ways.
Pokemon - My first big "I give up" moment. I was an obsessive Pokemaniac from ages 13 to 15. The obsession petered out as I got close to 16, but when I started to see the previews for Ruby/Sapphire and I realized that they were going to keep making new creatures and that the character designs were going to have to get more and more weird to keep up that momentum, I was like "yeah...I'm out..." I still enjoy the original generation. I've sunk dozens of hours into FireRed as a fun/nostalgia trip, but past Gold/Silver, I just can't bring myself to care.
I've brought this up on another thread and got jumped by newer-gen Pokemon defenders, so let me say this: I'm not AGAINST any of the creatures or games from Gen 3 forward. I haven't even played them, so I can't and won't judge them. I just don't care about them. I'm indifferent.
Dragon Ball Z - My newer obsession, from ages 16-20. I lost interest after I discovered that there is a lot of far superior anime out there. I still have my CCG cards and happily play the odd game with an old friend of mine, and I still have an attachment to the show in a nostaglic/campy sense, but going back to watch some of my old DBZ DVDs really cemented for me that I had outgrown it.
Final Fantasy - This one is borderline. I was a hardcore Final Fantasy devotee from ages 16-24. I've played all the (non-MMO) main-series games from start to finish as well as a number of the spin-offs, and I never felt that the series had jumped the shark. Then, similar to the DBZ situation, I started playing Western RPGs and games from non-RPG genres and realized that there were better fish in the sea. When Final Fantasy XIII landed, that was what put me on the edge. I don't think that it is as bad as many of its detractors believe; it was just a huge disappointment compared to the build-up, it had some serious design flaws (and I'm not even talking about the linearity, because I didn't mind that!) and most of all it didn't live up to its potential, especially where the story is concerned. Final Fantasy Versus XIII is Squeenix last chance to prove to me that they haven't lost it completely. If FFVersusXIII is bad, or never comes out, I'm done.
