I grew up listening to the Beatles (from a very early age), but the first song that I remember hearing and understanding was
<spoiler=A Day In The Life> This isn't the version I first heard, but it's my favorite. It's a better, more modern mix than the original, without the fade in/out from Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise)
I am now a veritable fanboy/aficionado, and have almost everything they ever released, including live shows and the Anthology series of CDs and DVDs. (338 Songs and 10 DVDs...yeah...)
__

I first heard "play Crack The Sky" performed live at a student show, after which I immediately found the orignal.
<spoiler=Play Crack The Sky> I F***ING LOVE THIS SONG.
I loved what I heard, decided to get more, and more, quickly becoming one of my favorite bands. I have all four albums, b-sides and live shows.
__

"White Shadows" and "Clocks" got me hooked on Coldplay.

Misery Business by Paramore. First time I had even heard of them was a friend showing me a video of Haley playing an acoustic version of it. I've had a crush on her ever since.

Hmm,
Cage The Elephant - Ain't No Rest The Wicked, after hearing it in the opening credits of Borderlands
Tilly & The Wall - Pot Kettle Black, after hearing it in the soundtrack for Midnight Club LA

Bizarrely, the thing that got me into way too many bands was the soundtrack to Trigger Happy TV (if anyone remembers that) i ran straight out and got albums from dEUS, Mercury Rev, The Dandy Warhols, Grandaddy and a bucket load of others.

Of course there is always the terrible pain of hearing an amazing song somewhere, getting the album and finding out that the rest is complete garbage (I Monster, i'm looking at you here!)

I first heard Daft Punk's 'Around the World' in a flash game being looped over and over.. (wait, isn't that what the actual song is like) ... soon thereafter I investigated DP and fell in love.

Also first heard Plug-In Baby by Muse at college, learned to play it on the piano before I learned the lyrics or heard of the band. XD
