I like how you've played everything from Morrowind, one of the most popular WRPGs to Mass Effect 2, and even more popular game.
Both are great of course. Morrowind is still one of my favorite games of all time.

Also I really didn't like FF13, make of it what you will.

Nah, I'm a fangirl and struggling. It's series of great ideas, strung together by one long corridor.

Now, Final fantasy VI, there's a game worth getting the snes out for. Or an emulator... or something.

While games like FFVI and FFVII are fantastic games i feel like they are not great starting points mainly because they are out-dated in terms of graphics and game speed. They are great to play if you like that style of game(which i def do) but i think its a better idea to kind of ease into it with a game that is a little newer(and therefore plays a little faster and looks better). I know if i had never played a jrpg and then picked up FFVII or Legend of Dragoon i would probably get frustrated by how slow it is(not the story but the gameplay). I would go with something like FFX(beautiful and still runs relatively smoothly even by current standards yet is still turn based which rules) or kingdom hearts.

I've never played a JRPG before, but as I understand it the kind of person who really likes WRPGs (such as myself) wouldn't like JRPGs. Or so I've heard.
Not at ll, I love both WRPGs and JRPGs
you have a pretty catchy name there if I do say so myself.

on topic:
like what they said above ff13 isn't a good starting point start with the tales series

I haven't played FFXIII, but if you really want my opinion, JRPGs were greatest during the SNES era which gave us great titles like Chrono Trigger, Secret of Evermore, Super Mario RPG, Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy VI (aka Final Fantasy III), and others. Although some relativity recent JRPGs that are pretty decent include Star Ocean: Till the End of Time and Dragon Quest VIII (although you'll probably get lost around the middle of that one).
If you looking to get into JRPGs and are a WRPG fan, I'd suggest starting with any of the titles I've listed.

I may be going against the flow here, but I would actually recommend Kingdom Hearts II as a starting point in the JRPG world.

It's relatively recent, it's an action RPG so you won't have to get used to the turn-based system (which is a bit of an acquired taste), but it still has a storyline very typical of other JRPGs. What's more, the gameplay is superb, and I imagine you'll be able to pick it up for all of about six or seven pounds. I can't imagine that you wouldn't have a blast playing it, I certainly did (although it has to be said I probably did get slightly more out of it having played a lot of Final Fantasy first, as there are some characters who cross over between the series).
Ummm wouldn't it make a lot more sense if he played Kingdom Hearts I first ? and MAYBEEE c.o.m.... just my opinion but starting in the middle of the story yeaaaa not a good idea.

OT: I haven't played 13 yet so i don't exactly know how it works out story wise... depending on the consule of your chioce their are plenty of other games for you to try other then final fantasy 4,6,7,or 9. I would try chrono trigger if you want a old school JRPG. The world ends with you (twewy) is a good jrpg for a handheld system (ds).(chrono trigger is also for ds as well) FF6 is a good rpg yes but it is a little hard to find now for modern consolse ( i think it is on virtual console) My personal recomendation though would be one of the two i named above. they are good starting points into the genre.

What most people have been saying, a good intro to the JRPG scene is a "Tales" game by Namco. While I don't know how the next gen ones have fared, but Tales of Symphonia for the Gamecube and PS2 is great. It keeps the JRPG style story, with some twists, the leveling up and all that is pretty much JRPG cliche, but the gameplay is superb. You have the normal world map overworld, that you go to walk from town to town and etc, with some "random" encounters (you walk along, and some random monster sprites will appear on the world map, some will chase after you to start a fight, or some will just stay still, so you can choose your fights), and the in-battle combat is somewhat similar to a fighting game, you have your team (which you can set their tactics, somewhat like Dragon Age, i guess), and you have your normal attacks, and then you can set your special attacks to different buttons ie. a forward A move can be your sword thrust or you can make it a sword barrage. All together its an extremely fun experience, lasting me about 40-60 hours worth of play time.

you wouldn't enjoy FF13 since it takes about 20 hours to get good, I not sure if many people have the patience for that, maybe try FF12 I hear it's much more action based.
