The Stanley Parable, it is SO good.
Heres the video for its HD remake; GO PLAY IT, it will only take you about 30 min to play all of the endings, but it is amazing.

Age of Wonders

The series did fairly well but it just seems to have become completely forgotten over the years which is a pity because it was a fantastic series. Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic has got to be one of my all time favourites even, such a damned good game!
Oh sweet mercy. Yes! So much wasted summer holiday spent on that game.

It Came From The Desert.

It was awesome and I remembered it the other day and I used to play it a lot.

Disgaea good luck hearing that much about it.
Disgaea is pretty well known I would have thought.

Soul Nomad and the World Eaters would be a lesser known one by the same company. It was also really good.

Ever heard of Dark Fall?

You've never heard of Dark Fall.

That's a shame.

It was a deliciously creepy adventure/ghost-hunter game set in an ancient, abandoned hotel where ghosts talked to you, the atmosphere was positively painful, and the scares were GOOD.

I always thought that "lights in the hallway turning off towards you" was cliche and inherently not scary, until Dark Fall did it. I suppose the fact that I survived without a scratch made it even worse, because the malevolent force was just TAUNTING me.
It's available on GOG.com.

There's a sequel as well, apparently.

The Saboteur. Oh how I love The Saboteur. It's GTA meets Assassin's Creed with a hint of Just Cause, set in World War II France. A little bit buggy, but that's because the dev studio was shut down before it was released.

I miss Pandemic Studios.

Two sequels actually, with the third on returning to the train station area of the first.

Before this gets flooded with games that are in no way underrated (and it will), I want to toss out Call of Cthulhu Dark Corners of the Earth and Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. I think both of those games have tons of great qualities and are absolutely worth playing, but some flaws and middling review scores have made them more or less forgotten.
I see your Dark Messiah of Might and Magic... And I raise you, Might and Magic (1-8). Everytime I try to recommend it to someone they confuse it with Dark Messiah which makes me think the damn thing isnt as underrated as people keep saying.
Thank both of you. Now I don't have to write in this thread. All is already said.

Also:
I don't understand how critics praise Dishonored and dismissed Dark Messiah. I really think they have a couple of things in common.

Two sequels, actually.

The first one is the best, and any patient horror fan should play it.

Gah Ninja'd It's not exactly old but this is the first game that came to my mind when I saw this thread. I bought it randomly in a steam sale and found it really surprisingly good.

Little Big Adventure 1&2

You play a guy in a blue robe who throws his magic ball at people; talks to a godess; travels to different worlds and can call lightning down from the sky, killing anyone on the screen.

Oh, and did I mention jetpacks? Because jetpacks.

What's not to like?

Alien Hominid on the ps2.....all of the charm of a Metal Slug Game with cool crudely drawn art style....difficult in single player though !

Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines (I know that the internet is huge on this game, but if I were to tell any other gamer whom I know in person they'd have no idea, even my pc gaming friends)
Friggin' agreed. I'm on my first playthrough of that game and I can't believe I had missed it for all those years! It's buggy as hell, even with the fan patches, but it's pretty damn good! I'd certainly call it underrated, but not really forgotten. It seems to have this niche carved out for itself that won't let it die. Which is appropriate I guess.

My underrated and forgotten pick is Way of the Samurai on PS2. It was basically a video game version of Rashomon, with a story that only took maybe two hours to beat (and was only supposed to take place over the course of two days). However, it put most branching path narratives to shame, because you could really play those two days in any way you wanted, and every decision you made had unique consequences. The combat was cool too, since depending on your sword type you could have a laid back, reactive stance, a frenzied low stance with aggressive movements, a ninja fighting style, etc.

And it had permadeath, which makes you get attached to your character REAL quick!

Cryostasis the sleep of reason, while maybe not a gem it is something unique with a very chilly atmosphere and most certanly worth playing also it's around 10 euros on steam so yeah no reason not to play this one.

You know what, I'm going to change my #1 to Way of the Samurai as well. I couldn't agree more sir. Best game that no one has played. I've seen EVERY ending, and spent countless drunken hours with friends in duels... So much fun, so much depth, and it perfectly captured a genre of movies that totally shaped my childhood (Akira Kurosawa forever!).

Plus it so underrated I forgot to mention it. XD

You sir, are awesome for reminding me!

Legend of Legaia for the PS1. Bought it for the unique combat system. Read reviews that dismissed the story as SAVE THE TREES! The world had a lot of charm though, and by the end I was surprisingly invested in the storyline. Wish Sony would put this one on their ps1 classics.

Shadowman for N64. A dark and mature world that played like a mix between zelda and tomb raider. And this on the N64 was a rarity. And while I'm at it, I just thought of Jet Force Gemini. It got a lot of praise when it came out when Rare was a juggernaut but I don't seem to hear it listed as one of the great N64 games. I sure had fun with it
