Growing up, we used to have jimmies on our ice cream. Now, they are called chocolate sprinkles. Although there apparently isn't any connection, people thought that the sprinkles the name somehow related to Jim Crow. From what I know, it's actually named after an employee in the factory whose name was James and was not black.

It's funny to see an example of something harmless become racist because of the area deeming it to be racist, and this is only because the area itself is racist.

Gollywogs:

At the time they were considered just cute cuddly dolls for the kiddies but now we look at them and see the racism behind making dolls of stereotypical depictions of black people. But at the time, it wasn't a problem.

Same with some of the older Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck Looney Tunes cartoons, nothing hurts more really then to see beloved cartoon characters mocking ethnics by pretending to be in the Black and White minstrel show, but there you go.

^ This.

My sister when she was 17 at college (she is only like 19 now) was with some friend and they saw a gollywog in a charity shop window. My sister, as she does went "Oh that SO CUTE" and her black friend launched into a triad about how racist she had just been. Like.....Wtf. How is that racist. Its a doll. I fear we have come to a strange paradox where racial minorities are so worried they will be discriminated against that THEY are actually worse then most : /

This is of cause subjective and based on one observation. But there are similar stories from around where ppl have said something in complete innocence and been hauled up for it.

It has come to the point of where many people don't know what racism is; a word isn't racism. The intention behind it or context given 'might' be though.

Although this is evident by the many louder accusations of racism, like on Resident Evil 4, Mafia II, Left 4 Dead 2 etc...

The Confederate flag. Loved the Dukes of Hazard when I was a kid, and there's a big rebel flag on the side of their car. No controversy whatsoever. Now, a remnant of regionalism is "racist".

Before the flamethrowers come out: I think that a person who does something that is generally perceived to be racist is doing so in order to troll irl, making them what is commonly referred to as a dick. And that person is likely to be racist. But there is nothing racist about the flag itself.

in Germany it used to be Ok to call foreigners "ausländer(meaning foreigner)" but a while a ago that apperently became racist so we started calling them "Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund" which basically means that they migrated here at some point. It's incredibly annoying and also tends to make sentences incredibly long. And it's not PC in Germany to disagree with someone who is Jewish. Because they are Jewish and if you disagree with a Jew you apparently become Hitlers little helper.

racism is overblown these days. there are whole organizations to dealing with racism. in my opinion the NAACP is far more racist than most people. if white people had an organization that gave out awards ONLY to white people they would get the s#$@ sued out of them in seconds, however, the NAACP is allowed to do this. they also blow alot of crap out of proportion.
Black people are a minority. There's nothing wrong there. As a minority, they need to be assured fairness or try to achieve excellence by helping their own race. Being a minority starts you off at a disadvantage, so I have no problem with the incentives or awards given out to help even out things such as education and workforce. Some government programs I have problems with, but NAACP is totally legit.

And yes, being a majority and already getting numerous scholarships and awards, whites excluding other races would be racist.

Also, how is this related to the thread besides a loose connection to racism?

When I was younger people of mixed (black and white) race were known as "half-cast". This is not acceptable these days apparently.

BTW in a town called Harwich close to where I live there is a yearly event around christmas where Santa comes to town with his companion Black Peter who is supposed to be a representation of the devil! How bad is that?!

I found Toms owner from Tom & Jerry to be a bit of a racist stereotype
There are two hysterical retcons of that being released lately. The first is the original voice with slender white legs replaced for the original, and the other is a man with an accent-free voice. The first one is hilarious because of the incongruity, and the other is just weird because it seems too contrived, as if they're trying to avoid 50 racist and sexist stereotypes simultaneously, and just drawing attention to the fact through their efforts.

OT (again): Do they still show Speedy Gonzalez cartoons? I loved that character when I was a kid, but I don't think I've seen a single one in almost a decade.

'Baa baa black sheep' has suffered under the gaze of political correctness. Rainbow sheep is a variant now (stupid, isn't it?). Nevermind the fact that you do get sheep with black wool.

He's still around, got a job advertising broadband and TV for Virgin here in the UK so maybe he's decided to get out of the toon business for a while....like a carer brake or something.

Not sure, pobably reffering to African descandants of the high melanin count persuasion as blacks. But I think that's just found mostly in the bueaucratic world where everyone is incredibly sensitive.

Funny story, when I was litle my dad really like movies about the Vietnam War, and all the soldiers on said movies reffered to the VC as Charlies So, in my young mind I figured...

All Asians = Charlie

Yeah, I got in trouble for that obviously logical thinking for a young child in school a few times. It's funny because one of my best friends at the time was asian, and I called him a Charlie. He was cool with it.

There are actually black sheep in the world and they're not related in any way to bla- er.. colo- um... Afro-American people (or whatever the fuck the P.C. term is).

When I was a kid (15 years ago) we had a lawn jockey. You know, the black statue in jockey clothes with the big red lips and holding a gas lantern. Well, we had one made out of cast iron (easily 100lbs) and no one bothered with it.

We moved across town and put it in our front yard for 10+ years, again no problems. Black family moved in down the block and saw it while walking their dog and the guy got REALLY pissed about it. He came banging on my door, got himself into a rage (like in my face rage) and my dad had to show him off our property with a 12 gauge.

Now I see what he COULD be pissed about but I wouldn't go onto someone's personal property to tell them I don't like their choice of porch decorations.

Not racism, more sectarianism.

I have been going to Rangers games since before I could talk, so I picked up some stuff(however I did only say them at the football game and not at home because my dad told me its just fun at the games).

I suppose you could still say Tiger and it could be technically racist.
How?

In Sweden we have these delicious things called negro-balls. They look like this:

Obviously, there has been debates about the name...
In Norway we got negro toes, and man those are delicious too.

True story:

My dad first saw a black person when he was 4/5 and ran home to my Nan and told her he had seen another boy who 'had never had a wash in his life'

completely innocent but I guess it would be frowned upon now

And end the school year at church and singing our national anthem is also "racism".
Yeah, that really is fucking brilliant. Our national anthem is racist? Silliest shit I've ever heard.

Ah yes, the negro-balls. Delicious indeed, and I still call them negro-balls. I don't mean any harm with it, it's just what they're called. I refuse to call them chocolate-balls.
I actualy call those small ones chocolate balls.

But I tend to call the larger ones (the ones that are usualy found in stores and usualy have coco on them) negro-balls.

I've never actually been racist and meant it, me and my friends are racist to each other all the time. We don't mean it and its just a bit of a laugh, its not like we walk down the street calling each other names ect.
