That's a nice reference.

Yesterday I was working my way through my third playthrough of Poacher to get the secret ending. After about 6 or so hours of on-off gameplay, I finally had reached the Judge. About 10 attempts later, I reached his final form. I was sort of dazzled that I had actually reached the final form, since the second form was annoying as hell.(The castlevania style boss where there are moving platforms and any thing that hits you knocks you back into an insta kill fall. However it was a bit more forgiving)

The final form was vertically moving platforms with the now blind and teeth-missing Judge below you. I was confused as to what I was supposed to do, so I just kept jumping like normal, thinking that I needed to run out some timer or something. 1:52 minutes later, I heard a section in the soundtrack that sounded familiar(I'd post it but I'm unsure if I'm allowed to). You see, the final part of the soundtrack to this boss form was a heavy metal(well, heavier) variation of the middle part of the Zero Punctuation intro.

At this point I was rocking my head so hard in glee that I almost fell, but I saved myself with a shotgun jump and figured out how to kill the boss.

So, what are some of your favorite references in Videa Garmes?

is Poacher an indie game? I've never heard of it, but I can assure you, if it's not, that probably was a coincidence, less then an homage.

It's...a game made by Yahtzee. So probably not a homage. But I also somehow doubt it's coincidence, either.

OT: Hmm, lots. There was Altair in the Witcher

Then there is Magicka...well, all of it. You can rarely go few paces without some reference cropping up - from James Bond through Star Wars, through friggin' Robin Hood and so on. But I think the one I would go with happens when a ship filled with goblins stops next to a village and one of the villagers yells out "Run to the hills! Run for your lives!". I just laughed at it the most, I think.

And Blood 2 had its fair share, too. Like finding a Predator lair and such.

I think the cheat codes in Heroes 3 Shadow of Death were quite cool - they were all references to the Matrix - like nwczion (all buildings), nwcagents (gives you black knights), nwcthereisnospoon (infinte mana), nwcwhatisthematrix (reveals the map), and of course nwcredpill and nwcbluepill (to win/lose immediately).

One of the most obvious ones to me is probably "Mysterious Wall Chicken" in Dust: An Elysian Tail.

DoPo stole Magicka.

And I'm curious to know how much of it was a joke by the developers vs. something the publisher legitimately wanted in the game, but this poster in Deus Ex: Human Revolution certainly makes me laugh every time I see it:

EDIT: Oh, Blizzard games are chock full of them everywhere you look too. Ranging from cheat codes in the first Starcraft game to achievement names in World of Warcraft, you stumble over them almost every five minutes.

I like how Hewie from Haunting Ground makes a cameo appearence in Resident Evil 4 (the dog you can free at the very beginning, who in turn will aid you against El Gigante - who also looks remarkably like Debilitas from Haunting Ground). I thought it was a nice reference overall. Leon even goes "Hey, it's that dog!" when he sees Hewie for the 2nd time. Obviously he's recognizing him from his previous encounter, but that's pretty much the reaction any gamer would get if they already knew Hewie from Haunting Ground.

Oh I liked the dead Not Indiana Jones outside Goodsprings in Fallout: New Vegas. There's a skeleton wearing a hat suspiciously like Indy's stuffed inside a fridge in the middle of a nuclear wasteland.

I'm not sure if I like the reference but in Persona 4 Arena, Kanji has a colour where his skin is crimson red. Fucking Tager references... I mean, Kanji has some bullshit grapples but I still feel I can win if I play REALLY safe. As in sit back and spam Ariadne's Weaves forever. Just for Kanji matchups I play Labrys as a keepaway character.

Tager just takes the liberty of deciding where your character goes at any time. It's really, really, REALLY annoying. I don't think i've ever once won against a Tager online. His basic throw does half Mu-12's health. May as well just AFK the rest of the round at that point.

I did see a Hazama themed Naoto colour which looked AWESOME as well but it's either a purely fan made one or it's in the extra colours I haven't unlocked. I would get motivated to learn Naoto properly if I could actually have that colour.

Not really a reference, but I thought Snake's Blu-Ray moment with Otacon was quite funny. Otacon basically tells the user to switch discs, at which point Snake corrects him by saying that since it's a Blu-Ray disc there's no need to switch, and tells him to get a grip. ^^

The only one that springs to mind is finding Altairs's body in The Witcher 2. I know I've encountered way more, but my memory fails me.

Here are some good ones that I can think of off the top of my head.

I'm surprised I haven't seen this one show up in the thread yet. It's so damn random too.

Granted Swan and Journey were published by Santa Monica, but still a very nice little reference.

...with Portal turrets!

The myriad of references in the Monkey Island games always make me smile, alot of them are references to other Lucasarts titles like Sam & Max, Day of the Tentacle and the Indiana Jones games. They're pretty overt too. Like a statue of Sam & Max in front of the Giant Monkey Head on Monkey Island in the first game (which is a Tentacle statue in the special edition) or Indie's Hat in the antique shop in MI2.

I was also a fan of the HP Lovecraft references in TES: Oblivion and Fallout 3. In Oblivion there was a small village (I forget the name) that had a quest called 'Shadow over [village]' which is a reference to The Shadow Over Innsmouth. And Fallout 3 had the Dunwich Building which had a pretty creepy mini-quest in it.

Oh, I just remembered another one.

There's a Psychonauts reference in a side-room of the Queen's Castle in Alice: Madness Returns.

I had to smile when I found that one.

Here's another one, I think the first code to the first safe in Dishonoured(I think it was 0541? And I'm spelling honour the way it should be. Shut up auto correct) was referencing something, but I can't remember what it was.
Next, in the mission where you
go after Daud
, there is a room where an apprentice is training. The room reminds me a lot of one of the training missions in the first Thief. I'm unsure if this is a coincidence or a reference

I was so certain that you'd linked me to a picture of Link there. What a wasted opportunity.

OT:
I can't think of any off the top of my head, other than the Scarface reference in GTA: Vice City. There's an apartment you can enter and in the bathroom there's a chainsaw and a huge bloodstain on the wall.

I was playing The Witcher a couple of days ago and walking past a random NPC who suddenly starts whistling The Imperial March from Star Wars

Mercenaries:playground of Destruction is full of references

- CIA Agent Buford is talking about a C130 gunship being so powerful "it's like one of those Star Destroyers from that space movie"

- the scrolling text on the news reports features references like "Coruscant:Lawsuit filed over faulty space station exhaust port","Egyptian artifact found packed in crate in government warehouse since 1936" and "Odo island scientists baffled by giant footprints"

- the collectibles in the game are ancient treasures and blueprints.Among these can be found the Death Star Plans,Ark of the Covenant,Kessel Starchart and Episode VII screenplay

- if you attempt to fire a weapon with no ammo your character will remark "What am I supposed to use?Harsh language?" a line from Aliens

In the Infamous games, there's a Sly Cooper logo on Cole's backpack.

Also, in Crash: Twinsanity, you can see Spyro briefly appear in a cutscene in that treasure room near the end of the game.

In the L4D games, Louis can say: "This is just like Counter-Strike!" and Ellis can say: "Dude, this is just like Team Fortress 2."

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

What is this I don't even

Anyway, I like the death scream that is also present in other media.
The Wilhelm scream? I almost pissed myself laughing when I first heard that in Red Dead Redemption. I'd had the game for about a year and then suddenly I notice it, and now I can't stop noticing it!

In Destroy All Humans! 2 after destroying a building during a specific mission Crypto will remark:

Naturally, referencing the greatest video game of all time makes that the greatest reference of all time.

Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines has an endless supply of them. Think of a classic 80s/90s sci-fi fantasy movie. There will be a reference to it in the game. I found it more annoying than anything else - it isn't interesting or funny, and it serves as constant reminder that I am playing a game.
