"that's just your opinion"

i've been seeing a lot of arguments and people being upset because "everybody should keep every opinion they have to themselves". And though this is kind of good advice, i think that when somebody's life starts interfering with yours either indirectly or directly then you should speak up about it! then not get shot down just because "thats just your opinion" people have a right to speak up when they think something is wrong. and when somebody tells you to stop doing something they consider stupid its not an "unwanted opinion" its advice. you don't need to hate it just take it as it is.

what do you think about this escapists?

People on this site rarely have hated my opinions, but if they do, I don't generally pay any attention to them unless they want to talk about it like two mature adults in the form of a conversation instead of silly internet hate.

But yeah, like Matthew said, it's up to you whether you let it affect you or not.

true, but that is on the internet. and i give -1 fucks about what others may have to say on the internet.

but i have faced a lot of this in every day life away from the internet.

I think it is important to keep in mind that opinions are just that and your own opinion is not golden fact. You won't change everyone's minds and you're not always right. Just act adult and clearly state your opinion and be prepared to disagree, you'll avoid many an argument doing so.

............. is this not exactly what i am speaking out against. like said, this is a fairly good idea. but when somebody is being obviously stupid like lets say sitting in a bar while pregnant, is it just your opinion to say that person is making a bad choice?

and lets just say some guy is being a real dick to you, is it just your opinion that he should stop?

EDIT: i also believe that sometimes arguments/debates are needed to get important points across.

Technically yes on the first one. The second would actually be my request.
I view arguments and debates as two different things. Arguments are just a back and forth attack match while a debate is a point by point showing of views and evidence. You're not necessarily trying to convince someone during an argument but in a debate you are(although you're still unlikely)
In my post I was speaking more in context of discussion rather than actual at the time issues, but I still sort of stand by myself. I think people should be allowed to be stupid so long as it doesn't negatively effect others, to a certain point of course(such as the pregnant woman example you gave as I would argue that may effect her unborn child).
Although I should mention that my post wasn't necessarily an argument against you, but more my general feeling on the topic at hand.

An important distinction needs to be made between informed opinion and uninformed opinions.

Generally, discussions between those with informed opinions are a lot more respectful than those between those without such information. But I think people need to realise that an informed opinion has greater validity than an uniformed one.

For example, the opinion of the Professor of English Literature at Oxford University regarding the various literary interpretations of Joyce's Ulysses is a damned site more valid than mine, and I accept this - and thus (as I am completely ill informed on the subject) hold no opinion on the subject whatsoever.

yeah i understand that it was not against me but it still does raise a few points that i wanted to refine.

like if a roommate kept leaving dirty dishes around and you told him that he should clean the dishes he made dirty only to get a reply of "well that's your opinion"
(i know people like this and my first example that's the main reason i made this thread)

The roommate would technically be right but his logic not sound. His inaction would be negatively effecting me so I think that I'm allowed to stomp his opinion at that point. Assuming him doing the dishes is the proper arrangement.
I agree that debates and arguments at their core aren't too different, but the anger involved goes a long way.

I try to always point out in comments that might offend that it is merely my opinion, even though that should be blatantly obvious. This saves people the hassle of messaging me to tell me that what I said isn't a universal truth (because I'm clearly arrogant enough to think that )
But as said above, you don't have to let something affect you. If someone doesn't like or want your advice or opinion, then fair enough, that's their problem, and you need say no more.

I think the expression of our opinions is very important, and it's more in the way we say them most of the time. Respect other people's opinions, and no problems will arise.

Right, opinions. You know what's funny? Watching people react to saying something like "It sure is. So?" Most are too proud of the initial response to know how to react to someone simply acknowledging the statement.

More seriously, if they think their opinion, which is all we have, is so much more important, who cares what they think. Some people can be reasoned with when you have a differing opinion, and you may be able to have an enjoyable or even enlightening discussion, and those that don't aren't worth acknowledging any further.
