A fairly common thing when listening to music you like is that not everyone agrees that it's as good as you proclaim. But then there's the nay-sayers that go as far as to say that what you listen to is in fact not music, but just pointless noise. This is mostly seen when talking about extreme metal genres and progressive music, but I've heard people say it about most genres.

Whenever I hear it, it's always said in such a disrespectful manner. I admit, there is much music that is more difficult to get into than others, but no need to say it doesn't take talent to create it.

So what's your band or genre that you really enjoy but other people dismiss as utter shite with no musical talent?

The one I've been called out on the most would be Yersinia, a Swedish metalcore/hardcore punk band. I really enjoy them, and it's not like it takes anyone to make it, but people seem to think that there's no coherent thought or creative writing to it.

All music is pointless noise. Enjoy what you like, no matter the sound. I like most genres and I'm getting slightly attracted to that band.

EDIT: If you want a band that makes most people think is just noise.

Also my favourite band. RIP N12LLY.

I'd have to say Amon Amarth. None of my friends seem to get why I listen to them because they can't understand the Lyrics but Hell I can understand them easily.

Whenever I play this song My mom always asks me how I can stand this music and that it is just noise. I always tell her "It is just noise but it's good noise the crap you listen to is bad noise"

Mind if I hold onto that phrase? Seems strangely poetic.

Incidentally enough, I think that glitch music is awesome.

If you like that you may like Venetian Snares, though he uses more classical symphony/jazz samples. Even mixing them too. He's pretty cool.

EDIT: Or even some Team Sleep, anything where the drummer is Zach Hill is amazingly glitchy/trippy/eccentric/awesome!

I am about to blow your mind with stupidity. Please take this as representative of the average intelligence level of my friends and regular associates:

One of my friends recently declared my music taste as shit because I was listening to Bach's Toccata and Fugue. His reasoning? "Anyone can make that noise, it doesn't even have lyrics!"

In retrospect I really should have slapped him.

Music is music and personal taste is just that. Theres stuff i hate, noisy screeching for no real reason i hate. Why have a band when every one is awesome apart from the singer? Or the growling singers that just sound fake. That annoys me.

But we can all slag down bands we hate or dont like. But again its down to taste. As for bands, i love The Nepfilim or Fields of the Nephilim. Love them.

Look at my avatar, now back to me...you get the drill. Pretty much anything I listen to with screamed/growled vocals gets branded by certain people I know with the tired platitude of 'it's just meaningless noise'. It's funny that they use that particular phrase whilst the intent of thier statement completely ignores the musicianship. Really this kind of blanket statement just divulges their own ignorence of the subject at hand, it doesn't actually display any reason for their distaste of the band/genre in question.

There's not actually a whole lot going on in that song, the words are muffled and the guitars are probably 2 or 3 notes in all, only very bassy so most can't really hear it

Nice video editing anyway, matches the mood they were going for

Grindcore.. is stupid. I don't like hard core metal really, but I can understand others liking it. Grindcore, however, is on another level. Literally ANYONE can do it. Turn all of your shit to LOUD and start screaming/banging on things.

That is only your opinion, I find that song rather boring but whatever... I'm not part of their audience like you

... ehdyuh... huh... just... bwuh?! Anyway, yes, you really should have...(!)

Good grief, how dare he?!

OT: I love me a good bit of big band jazz, but my old man can't stand it, questioning its purpose in the evolution of popular music. Mmm, yeah...

I enjoy chiptune, but even most gamers seem to dismiss it as nothing but NES nostalgia.

And even then, few people who acknowledge that chiptune outside of old games exists, its mostly chiptune trying to be something its not, or bad automated 8-bit covers.

What just kills me the most, though, is when people insist that no sounds produced by a computer can ever compare to an analogue instrument.

I'm sorry, but no. I'm not that musically inclined, but I'm into fine art, and even there, analog is not God.

I just played all of the videos embedded on this page at once. Talk about "meaningless noise" but to be completely honest, I am actually enjoying the crazy wall of sound I am experiencing. I think I've discovered something really special....

Unless you've created a piece consisting entirely of feedback squeals, explosions, random electronic beeping, and distorted screaming all played at once with no semblance of a pattern, the odds are you haven't created something I'm going to describe as "meaningless noise" and "not music". Even the incoherent screaming bullshit bands that kids these days seem to enjoy are still demonstrably performing music, just horrible music that seems to go out of its way to make listening to it as unpleasant as possible (which is why I don't).

Don't have any examples myself because to the best of my knowledge no one has ever said that about a band I enjoy.
