On a similar note, there was some mention of the Doctor only being able to regenerate 12 times. This makes him the last Doctor technically, but he obviously wont be.

Basically I think they're going to bring up the "only 12 regenerations" thing, pull something out of their arse to get around it, but make it so the next Doctor is female. I'm totally calling it here people, consider yourself spoilered, the 13th Doctor will be a chick.
I'm fairly certain they already said something to that effect in The Sarah Jane Adventures a few years ago.

They've said a couple of times that they won't be bound by the 12 regenerations thing. At least I think RTD did. The implication has always been that it was a cultural restriction rather than a biological as the Timelords in the previous series managed to give and take away regenerations. Now that the Doctor is the last surviving Time Lord he can probably do whatever he wants.

Weird considering he's been in the DW universe twice already (although that's happened with a few characters) but I'm really pleased with the choice.

Besides, if it doesn't work out, he can always fuck the fuck off!
I remember the girl who played Martha being in an episode before she became a companion, and I think Colin Baker played a part in Tom Bakers run. It most likely wont be explained .
Colin Baker's appearance on the show previous to being cast as the Doctor was actually during Peter Davison's run. Less than 2 years separated his appearance as an antagonistic captain of the Capitol Guard on Gallifrey (and therefore a Time Lord himself) and his taking up the role of the Doctor. Replacing the actor he had played opposite. Just one of the many controversies of Colin Baker's run....
During Tom Baker's run his Time Lady companion regenerated, and deliberately took the appearance of a character they had met in the story just previous to her regenerating.

And just to completely bone the establishment, Bruce Willis as the new Doctor.

Tee hee.

I'm glad we're getting another Doctor who seems naturally dignified, and distinguished, while experienced all in appearance alone. Getting younger, and younger Doctors for the sake of winning over young American demographics was getting tiring rather quickly.

Never got into Dr. Who, so here's a 'shrug' from me. But I'll share this nugget of Fun Fact:

I wasn't even aware a new Doctor was being chosen. Looks interesting either way, I was getting tired of the "young hip but not really" Doctors.

Now if Moffet could write a decent companion Doctor Who would be a good show again.
Agreeing with this. The whole "Female companion fancies the Doctor but is still-a-strong-female-character-nonetheless" thing was getting kind of old. Could we not have a female lead who didn't flirt with him continuously?
I know everyone goes on about Rose Tyler ad nausium, but it was a really good example of a decent character interaction without making it overly romantic.

Would be nice if we could also get some male companions again (thinking Captain Jack kind of thing, though perhaps less cheesy this time round). Not necessarily all the time, but now and again - like a recurring character.

Also, aliens. I liked what they did with the friendly Sontaran and the lizard woman (forgot name) last series, even if it was played for gags and the series itself was kind of weak. Would be good to have an alien passenger for a few episodes, even if they weren't a fully-fledged companion.
