The least safe now are doctors, because there were a lot of lay-offs few months ago and it may occur again.
I'd say that doctors'(that is, people with jobs in hospitals) careers are relatively secure and safe. My parents' jobs aren't threatened(surgeon and pediatrician, if you're wondering) and neither is my job(I'm not technically a doctor, more of a phlebotomist, just to keep living relatively comfortably while in med school).

But yeah, just in case, I've been saving more money and just living a bit more frugally.

I'm staying at home for a year longer than I thought, but it's no biggy I suppose. I'm saving up money so whenever I can actually afford an apartment I can go and get one.

I'm really struggling to find a job, and the only limits I have are which ones I'm physically able to get to by car in under 30 minutes... But I'm applying everywhere I can, from places like Quizno's to the local drugstore, and I'll be applying to a gas station...

I got laid off a couple days ago, so I'm feeling the pain, alright. Luckily I've got a pretty good amount of money saved up, but I'm not looking forward to looking for another job - and I don't care what you say, Nerdfury, I'm not working at fucking McDonald's...

I'm going into construction industry ... up til only 6 months or so ago, there was a huge shortage in civil engineers, so much so that there were 3-4 graduate places per engineer. Now some of the largest companies in the UK have around 2 places IN TOTAL ... nobody is hiring. It sucks as I have spent 5 years in uni to get my masters, plus around 16months of work experience with a company and may not get a job out of it. Some people only think that it is the laborers and site workers that have been affected by the recession, but it has hit very hard on designers and engineers up the scale. If I can get a job now (a very big if), I will be looking at 16 to 17k a year, rather than the 23-24k that they were offering previous.

So to sum up this rant, there are less jobs for the high skilled in construction with less pay and I do not see it changing in the foreseeable future.

Also, stop blaming the economy or the recession for your laziness. Get a job. There's no shortage of honest work available.
True, but there's a severe shortage of decent work. Call me picky, but I refuse to work for big supermarket/fast food chains, because they pay around AUS$6 per hour (they seem to love taking advantage of Minors). I've found one at my local video rental shop, but I'm editing my Resume at the moment to look presentable.
You see? There's your exact fucking problem. You "won't" work for _____ because it's too low paying or beneath you. You know what? Those jobs are still jobs, and given your indication you're a minor, they're the best you're going to damn well get until you've got experience.

I started as a telemarketer for an internet provider, then I moved onto life insurance and now I have a great job that pays me $28 an hour to write emails, not to mention other bonuses. And all it took was a year of crappy telemarketing to waltz into it.
Yeah, but I know quite a few places that are available/less grueling/pay more than a Fast Food Chain. And with that knowledge in mind, I'm working on getting one.

Well, dad, who always lectured me on investing and how I should buy a house mid-bubble had most of his money in banking stocks and is now just about wiped out. God willing he lives to a ripe old age but I suppose that would have been my inheritance...

Right now I have everything in cash holdings so am sitting pretty while others squirm. Got my eyes on the indices... will move to gold, treasuries, or durables if things get really hairy but for now I think the U.S. dollar is recovering nicely from its bottom and still has some room to go.

Well, I live in Australia, in the Illawarra, which has an unemployment rate of approximately five million per cent. Had I stayed in my uni degree to be a primary school teacher, I'd be fucked, working part time (IF I could hold on to a part time job around here: stores close every few weeks etc) and after 4 years get out onto a 5 year probation on horrible pay with a huge HECS debt (for the degree).

But I dropped out and got a mechanical apprenticeship at a coal mine, and they throw money at me to get underground. I'm locked in for a 4 year contract with a huge employer, so hopefully after those 4 years things look a bit better.

It hasn't affected me in the slightest. I have a great job that pays me well, I've just bought my own apartment and I've made no cutbacks to my enjoyment at all. I save money for a rainy day and still enjoy life and buy the things I want, when I want.

If you want to buy PC hardware, get it from MSY Technologies. They have stores around the country. I bought my current PC for $1900 or so about a year ago, when the same system would have cost me double elsewhere.

Also, stop blaming the economy or the recession for your laziness. Get a job. There's no shortage of honest work available.
What kind of job you have? On topic it hasn't affected me "yet" it probably will if i don't get a better job but i can't find one. Damn college education. It isn't worth shit these days.

I work for an internet provider, which has no end of work available. There's a constant attrition of staff, because they keep hiring young people (who don't get paid less than me, so they don't hire young staff so they pay them less) who keep quitting because they're bored, or because they're not mature enough to understand that they have to do a decent job and quit, or because they suck and get fired. Those of us who do well remain, and worst case scenario is I can always move into a less desirable position for the same money.

I haven't noticed any change. Ya, a lot of the big companies are going under, but there are seriously like 7 major car manufacturers besides ford (that I can name off-hand).
