I really like studies like this, mainly because when you pull these statistics, they hardly ever account for the situation of a woman entering as male during profile/in game name sign ups.
And yes, this happens - you'd be surprised how much having an effeminate name or character marks you out for all sorts of different treatment. (Fat, Ugly or Slutty anyone?)

The problem is even if there aren't as many women as men (or other "minority/majority" comparisons) playing AAA hardcore games (yeah, there's probably not).
They generally don't play AAA and I've always wondered if this was indicative of woman generally not enjoying competitive atmospheres. You also don't see many women who enjoy sports, poker, or chess at a comparable ratio to men that do
Quick question, could that answer be anymore based on opinion?
First off: What's considered AAA?
Is it multi million dollar competitive pure 3-d, non-indy development? Most of the games I've brought as of late have been indie devs or small companies - most recently? Heavy Bullets.
What's considered hardcore? Isn't that purely up to how seriously you take the game?
I play extensive amounts of ranked solo in MOBAs - specifically LoL, DoTA, Smite and Dawngate (the last 2 to a lesser extent to the others). Some people consider that to be 'hardcore'
I also play 'hardcore' (single death no respawn league) PoE, I don't really have a softcore character (aside from a lvl 42 I haven't touched since I started the game) I play 'hardcore, casually'. I don't play like I'm calculating and squeezing out every drop of damage I can get, I play hardcore because I like the danger and the fun of it - it isn't hard-faced seriousness, its fun with some risk. (For the sake of any further questions, I'm a minion/spell hybrid build witch around lvl 60 in default hardcore league, also considering building a room clearing ranger for Vaal pocket runs)
Are we talking console games only?
I've been gaming since I was 8 (female) and I haven't brought a console game in quite some time (at least 6-8 months), last ones I remember getting were Halo 4 and Skyrim (regretted that one).
How about non-FTP?
Some people don't consider PoE 'hardcore', and only view Diablo 3 as such - same with League and DoTA.
I don't think there's a term more subjective then 'hardcore'.
You talk about competitive atmospheres, does that mean that only pvp games can be triple A or are we counting only 'Hardcore' AAA pvp games? That sounds pretty niche if you ask me.
