I may be dating myself here, but I experienced the same phenomena back in high school when Titanic came out. I had (girl)friends in my class who saw it in the theater 12, 14, and even 20 times (by their own admission), for no other reason than they found Leonardo DiCaprio to be hot. That's it. I asked them what they thought about the plot or the special effects, and their response was usually "Who cares? Leo is amazing."
So there it is. James Cameron's most successful movie (pre-2009) wasn't because of his script or his vision or his budget, it was because of that wonderful chemical process known as puberty that makes teenage girls insane.
Twilight benefits from the very same process.
As usual, science explains all
Thanks so much for making
me feel old for remembering exactly what you're talking about. I hope you're happy!
But seriously, that reaction to Titanic annoyed the crap out of me for a good long spell - the movie wasn't any good until the bloody ship started sinking, grah! So it would have been nice if I could just shake my head sadly and offer my condolences to the members of the younger generation for having to put up with Twilight fangirls, but I get to experience all of that annoyance first hand thanks to my Twilight-obsessed younger sister. Note that when I say "younger", I mean younger by
slightly more than one year, making her well more than old enough to 'know better'.
Hearing her sing the praises of crap that
literally every other member of her family tells her is crap[footnote]Our mother was subjected to the movie and reported that "the acting was so bad, it felt like watching a Spanish soap opera, only without any of the fun". I gave her a high five when she told me that.[/footnote] is insufferably annoying. I am
not looking forward to the after action report on Eclipse (she is of course watching it right now with a slew of her (female) friends) that I will inevitably be subjected to, not looking forward to it at all.
