The Accent Game

So...this has been something that's been bothering me. I have no idea what the hell I sound like and I'm pretty sure most people don't know what they sound like either. So, I thought it'd be fun to just have others guess so we can sort of get an idea. Use vocaroo or youtube or whatever, though vocaroo is probably the easiest way. You can choose to tell if the people got it right or not. I might tell you where I'm from later on, but I just want to see where this goes, haha!

Yeah! No matter how hard I try, I don't think I'll ever get rid of my Yankee accent. So, while you got the country right, you didn't get the right region, though I do like to think I sound like I'm from there, haha! Some people think I'm from another region. I won't say which one so I can keep people guessing, but they thought I was from a state I've never been to before.

If you didn't tell me that English wasn't your first language, I probably would have guessed your from England. Though, it sounds like you picked up the accent from the entirety of England. But, then again, I am a Yank, so I'm not used to knowing what the different regions were like. I thought you sounded Cockney until you said "It's dreadful" in which you sounded like you were from the North. As for where you're originally from, my ears can't pick it up, haha!

You don't stress any vowels and didn't use any regional colloquialisms so really any where west of the Mississippi, probably from a high population center. You mentioned a Spanish speaking coworker so I'm gonna guess that you're from the Southwest.

I'm originally from Washington State. I've pretty much got no accent except when I stress O's like a Canadian; 'aboot' for about 'uut' for out. I watch too much hockey. I've gotten mistake for a Wisconsinite for it recently.

I seriously don't think I've ever thought myself to have a heavy accent. And if I have any mannerisms indicative of one I've never noticed them. But maybe there really is something there I'm not noticing. I'd probably have to talk for longer and more naturally than I did here, lol.

Yep, I really can't hear anything on this one. I think your even more neutral than me, haha! I'm going to guess anyway and say your from the Midwest...why? I don't know, I feel like it's a pretty safe guess. Unless we're talking about the way oop north guys, the midwestern accent sounds pretty normal to me for some reason.

You actually got the region correct, but you were a little too specific in what kind of city. Even if you look at my state, it's not very high in population. At my job, I do meet a lot of people with a thick accent, but, usually, the younger people don't have that sort of state accent for some reason. I'm not sure if I ever talked like the people around me. Maybe I did when I was younger and I dropped or maybe I just learned to talk from the movies or whatever. When my brother came back from Boston, he said he never realized how thick our accents were until he came back after a year, but he still thinks mine is pretty neutral. Though, I've gotten comments that I sound very like I'm from Minnesota or Wisconsin for some reason.

Originally from the deep South, actually. Never picked up any manner of Southern accent, but they're really not as common as you think. At least, I'd say so. Of course, part of it might be that I lived in or near more populated and urban areas than really rural ones.

Having gone to school at the University of Illinois at Champaign and knowing how many Hispanic people there were originally from Chitown, it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest. I had a really great burrito place on my dorm's street opened by a Hispanic guy from Chicago. Not to mention my favorite part of the Chicago marathon was passing all the streets corners lined with mariachi bands.

I'd record, but I don't have a mic on this laptop and having been raised in Washington state I've got an incredibly neutral West coast accent.

How does the saying go? 'Tha can allus tell a Yorkshireman, but tha cannot tell him her much.' ?
I like Yorkshire accents more than most of the other Northern English accents. I go to uni near Newcassel and the people there are downright incomprehensible. I was once stopped in the street by a guy who asked 'Stryuuraightmate?' I simply nodded, and he seemed pleased, so I guess it worked out.

My nationality is hardly a secret, so many of you won't have to guess. However, if someone who doesn't already know can identify what state/region of my country I come from just from my accent I will be crazy impressed.

I love these threads. Something about hearing people's voices is really... humanizing I guess. Even more so than seeing a photo. Voices are just more alive and less static.

Well, you're pretty clearly American.

If I had to narrow it down further I'd say the northern half, just because you don't sound stereotypically southern.

And now I'm going to feel pretty damn foolish if you say you're from Texas or something.

So, you're obviously from England.
You don't sound cockney.
You don't sound southern, although admittedly I have only the vaguest idea of what English southerners sound like.
You're sure as shit not Welsh.
So... northern? I don't know the names of the regions of England, but you'd be, say, closer to the Scottish border than to London, yeah?

Ah, fuck it, enough people have guessed so I can know that I don't sound southern, haha!

I'm actually from Oklahoma, which is right above Texas. I think the accents are pretty similar(but don't tell that to Okies, because they kind of really don't like Texans).

When I started asking people(when they've had no context) they say I sound very Midwestern, which is weird because I don't know what I'm doing to sound like them that 0_0 Though, when I admit I'm from the more southern region, people say "Oh, yeah, I can hear it" but there was that one terrifying night when a Minnesotan told me she could hear that I'm from the south(which makes it even weirder because I've had more than one person tell me I sounded like I was from Minnesota or Wisconsin).

Maybe I'm just really shallow, but I actually don't like the way some people talk where I live and I try really hard to sound neutral, but I think I've just gone the other way, but I can live with sounding like I'm from the north though, haha!

Anyways, I'd try to guess yours and, maybe it's because of your soar throat, but I was stumped. I looked at your profile and now I'm like "D'oh..." Oh well. Good show ^_^

Interesting! I suppose if I had to describe my own accent, it'd be rather neutral with bits of Welsh sneaking in every now and then. I have a feeling it was a conscious thing, as I wasn't too fond of the strong South Wales accent when I was a kid.


These days, I regard my previous attitude as snobbery.
