24 here. I was obsessed with the franchise while growing up. As soon as the 3D games started, I sort of trailed off. (I didn't have a Dreamcast when the original Sonic Adventures was released, although I really wanted it.)

Bought Sonic Generations the other week.

First reunion I've had with the old boy in a long time.

I hope Sonic Team take the praise for the that game to heart.

We don't need horrible extra characters, angsty teen plot and Shadow the goddamn fucking GARRGHH!!!

I think that the problem with sonic for a while was that the story was taking itself to seriously I don't have a problem with the characters themselves though
They should have taken the Mario route.

Barebones plot. Almost silent protagonist, and concentrate totally on the gameplay.

I don't play Sonic for the story, I play it for the adrenaline rush.
I think that the bearbones plot idea might get a bit boring after a while and sonic doesn't really seem lik the guy to even try to stay quiet

After playing generations, I'd have to disagree.

Classic Sonic didn't say a single word throughout the game, his facial expression explained how he felt about every situation.

That might be nostalgia talking, but the little guy was far more endearing than 'too cool for school' modern Sonic.

for modern sonic to stay quiet tails would probably have to jump in and say something in a cut-scene. and then immediately be hated by the fan base for it

I like Sonic. my favorite game to the series was probably Sonic's first 3D entry (not 2.5D) Sonic Adventure for the Dreamcast/Gamecube. I grew up with the game and still remember it fondly. I'm not particularly obsessed with the Sonic franchise more as obsessed solely with SA and SADX (Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure DX for those of you who don't know the Acronyms). I always thought he was a pretty cool character even now.

I played many of the old games as well which I enjoyed and when I had a Wii I downloaded several of the first games on the virtual console. I always vastly preferred the new, slim look of Sonic to the old, I'm a bit fat with stubby legs yet somehow I can still manage to run at the speed of sound sonic. Not that I have a problem with the old sonic, I just found that thought rather funny. I never really got that far into Sonic Adventure 2 Battle but I would like to buy it and finish it and no Sonic game has really had me crazy interested since then until Sonic Generations. I liked the Sonic Advanced series and Sonic rush series a fair amount though.

I also drew sonic characters... y'know, when I was 10. Sometimes I still doodle Sonic, but I mean Sonic, not some creepy-ass "Fanic" character with a shitty name and equally shitty powers i.e "Oooh, I'm tanukiyashainunekokittenbunnyaikoikaisexylovemastervampiiwolfkouhaisempaichanonic and I am some kind of mutant upright bunnydogcatvampire hybrid that can jump to the moon and control the alignment of the stars!! And I'm mysteriiiouuus!!! Fear me!!!". Of course, I don't spend my personal time at home drawing him, just doodling him in class on a homework assignment or two and scratching him out with pencil and erasing over it.
BTW I'm 17 years old. So I wasn't alive when Sonic first released.

18 Years old. Sonic was the first thing I ever learnt to draw. I played and loved all the original games, read the comics and watched the TV shows, played Sonic Adventure 2 (which I didn't mind) Sonic Heroes (which I quite liked) and Shadow the Hedgehog, and Arabian Nights (which I loathed) then didn't bother to get any titles afterward until Sonic Generations, which I have to say I adore. Yes, much like Pokemon, for me it is largely nostalgia talking, as I prefer the old-skool side-scrolling levels to the three-dimensional ones. Just the sound of the skid is enough to bring a smile to my face.
I'd describe myself as more of an honorary member of the fanbase who remembers what it used to be rather than whatever the shit it's doing now. I mean Werewolves, Black Knight... seriously, what.
And yeah, we don't need more characters. They should have ended it after Knuckles.

At about 11, I found a Sonic fangame and decided to put him in Google. About an hour of interested Wikipedia reading later, I decided he was interesting but put him out of my mind because I couldn't actually play any of his "proper" games. At around that time, a kids' magazine our school got a bunch of subscriptions of put an ad for Sonic Heroes on one page. I might be chronologically confused, but at the time I thought the game would have been pretty cool to play.

Age 12. [redacted due to Fifth Amendment]

12-15. Heard a lot about how Sonic's games all sucked after the first few, but I couldn't know for sure because I'd never played any of them. Regardless, I got pretty turned off, but not so much that I didn't get Rush and Dark Brotherhood for my DS (neither of which I actually beat.)

15. Browsing in a game store for no real reason other than to pass the time, I came across Colours for the Wii and decided "yeah, might as well." Fell in love because, despite the bad level design in a lot of places, it still seemed unique and interesting. I still hold it up as when Sonic's games "finally got good again" to people who think that was Generations (which has about as much bad level design.)

16 (this year). Steam Christmas sale. Friend of mine bought me Generations on its sale day. <3.

Personally i never really got into the Sonic series, sure when i was young, we got the original Sonic and a console as a hand-me-down, but other than that, the rarity of new games was proportional to the special occasions we had, which only encompasses Christmas and Birthdays.

So all in all, i've probably gotten into Sonic during the 3D generation with Adventure 1 and 2's Gamecube's remakes....Heroes wasn't that good...personally i think to more newer Sonic fans, the inclusion of Team Chaotix and the random/less serious plot to the previous 2 games probably gave a bad aftertaste to the audience.....

Maybe the population of Sonic fans simply got overcome with more newer and younger fans compared to the older side of the Fanbase, so in reality, the older fans would know that the characters of Team Chaotix came from Knuckles Chaotix, whereas they'd give the idea to newer fans to recolour their own characters....and god forbid that it happened with Adventure and Adventure 2.

As a final note, i think the 2D games manages to keep a near-consistant reputation in enjoyability, though the 3D ones are usually hit or miss. (the near miss being Heroes, and the misses probably being Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic 2006, Unleashed and possibly the Sonic Storybook games?, haven't heard much about the storybook games compared to StH, 2006 and Unleashed)

19 here.
Liked pretty much all of the Sonic games up to and including Sonic Heroes.. the series then fell on it's face... into a spiky pit... in a minefield...

Sonic Generations was fun though, if Sonic Team were smart they'd let themselves go out on a high-note after that, but I think it's safe to assume they won't.

To be fair the only reason you could see his face was because of his proportions and because of the 2d plain meaning it was always in view. Even though 2-d is the best format for sonic games I doubt it will ever go back. Mostly because if the people I know who play games are anything to go by people will complain that it is in 2-d because sega's lazy because inherently 3d>2d. They have no respect for the fact that a z axis isn't an automatic endorsement. Oh and OP not really a fan so no comment.

No I mean, Classic Sonic, ala Sonic Generations...

I'm all for the 3D gameplay, but classic stumpy Sonic just fits the tone of the games a lot more. His face told you all you needed to know.

Ok here it is. I'm a fan of sonic games up to the end of the Adventure series. (though i hated 3d blast and wasn't that fond of spinball) After adventure it's hit and miss for me. And you may hate me for saying this but i will say it anyways(deep breath) SONIC AND THE BLACK KNIGHT WAS AN ENJOYABLE EXPERIENCE AND SONIC RUSH WAS THE BEST HANDHELD SONIC GAME IN YEARS SINCE SONIC BATTLE. I LIKE BLAZE THE CAT! Sorry it had to be said. Truth be told Shadow the hedgehog was a mistake and that mistake was giving him a gun and a shitty follow up story And i know Blaze the cat has been brought in way to much after rush. Although I do believe Blaze the cat deserves a game. And and this is how often i believe friends should be in sonic game.

Shadow: Once every 2 games only available as multiplayer mode

Blaze the cat: Almost never. The first real new character with a decent story. We need to savor her and not ruin it with her crossing dimensions on the regular basis.

Tails: Every single game as a playable character and integral to plot. Bring back sonic and tails Co-op!

Knuckles: .....As much as I love Knuckles, he's here too much. He is supposed to be guardian of the master emerald but he loses it every single game. Make it seem like he is competent at his job.

Rougue .....No

Eggman....We need a new villain because I can't take him seriously anymore(I we keep him make him make sense)

Everyone else can go. I never want to see Chaotix Amy or Silver again. AND I SWEAR TO GOD I WILL HUNT DOWN SEGA EXECUTIVES IF THEY EVER MENTION BIG THE CAT!

oh and i'm 22

For me the plots are a big part of why I like Sonic. Which is probably why the first games didn't interest me that much (I played them after Adventure 2, which was my first Sonic-game).
I just find the horribly serious melodramatic plots that are badly written hilarious, and I have a soft spot for characters that are trying too hard to be mysterious and cool (which is why I love Shadow. He is my favourite immortal angsty anti-hero hedgehog ever).

But if someone can't enjoy the plots in the "so bad it's good" kinda way, I understand they'd hate them.

Eh, I stopped with the Sonic fandom for years but always meant to grow back.

I was an Archie Sonic comics kid. So I have to say that I like the whole idea of stories. I always played the original Sonic games and wanted more. Always been addicted to cute stories and cute fictional characters. I guess I'm just a naturally lonely person, or something. I have plenty of friends, but I love the heck out of fictional characters and settings, too. And there's just nothing like the feeling when you actually get lost in a fictional world and feel invested in it. It's an unparalleled feeling of joy and absorption is what it is. A little bit sad because it's almost like you long to live there. But still it's a cool feeling when you're wrapped up in a fictional place.

So for me, when considering getting back into it, what holds me back is the daunting-ness of getting back to being entrenched in Mobius or whever the Sonic critters are living.

I say I'm a "gameplay person", but you know, I surely lie. I'm a fictional character person. I want someone to do something amazing with something I relate to and I want to get wrapped up in someplace. I don't just want to go fast or kill things or controls be fluid. I want an intimate experience with a beautiful other world with fascinating people in it.

Sonic qualifies as that but it's kind of daunting. Considering I'm already emotionally invested in so many other fictional worlds, there's so much material for me to catch up on, and it sounds like there would be hardly anyone to talk to about it that would be fun to talk to with. If anything, there's become this "furry stigma" against it since the characters are anthropomorphic.
