They are all other fine examples of what we are discussing, but I was actually thinking of Kings of Leon....the bizarre thins about KoL are that they don't enjoy playin theyre new songs because of this crowd of people who had no idea they exsisted before sex on fire....

Like i said, popularity is a curse!!!

Ah, I've experienced this recently. A friend of mine got me into Flight of the Conchords, quite a while ago, and for a brief time we discussed them alot..sent each other videos, etc. That died down after a while (although I continued to like them), and just recently I was wearing a Flight of the Conchords t-shirt. When he saw it, he made a derisive noise, so I asked him why, and he said "I hate them now...they've got all popular..and sold out and stuff.." and then tailed off. Lost for words, I simply gave him a slap around the head.

I hate this concept of "selling out". The purpose of the band is to make money. Call me cynical, but I would bet that almost all musical groups ARE concerned about the money they make, regardless of what they say about it just being about the music. Thus, we should not be surprised, or disappointed, when they do things that make them more money. Sure, be disappointed if you don't like their music anymore, but not because they made a high-budget music video, or got more 'mainstream' or something.

Well said, i remember when Moby got in shit with fans years back for supposedly "selling out", no, he made music, someone wanted to buy it, he sold it...whats wrong with that exactly?

If a carpenter made a table and solde it would he be called a sell out, I think not!

Well that depends. Did he go for years making tables that only appealed to a certain group, but then a whole bunch of people came around and liked him only for 1 table that wasn't quite like the others, more common, and they offered him a whole lot of money to make alot more tables just like that one. So he stopped making special tables for the small group in exchange for more common tables for the larger group that paid better.

I think that would make him a sell out.

well alot of what ive noticed is the people who don't appreciate the music or only listen (or claim to listen to a band) just because the "cool" kids do and they want to be more the like the rest of the soulless followers with no individual thought or idea

Personally I say love what you love and hate what you hate, just wondering what you lot thought?
What if someone loves underground and hates mainstream? They may not necessarily hate the music, but they hate being identified with the "mainstream" crowd. What do you do about those people?
Not trying to bash you, just posing a hypothetical :p

That's another bonus for liking black/death metal.

I get excited instead of angry when I find someone who likes the same bands that I do, because such people are hard to find.

They jump ship because they never heard of them until they became popular. I found out about my favorite band Muse when they were popular but they have good music so what do I care.

Exactly. I call it Slipknot syndrome. It's really just because the people who liked the band in the first place don't want to be asocciated with the new scum that listen to them.

I would call it Metallica syndrome or Green Day syndrome, but they did actually release some shitty albums (I'm looking at you St. Anger).

Although for myself I've found that for the most part I've unintentionally drifted into listening to more obscure stuff, like Frank Turner or ska in general, so it's not so bad for me.

If you jump on the bandwagon because you genuinely like whatever the hype is about - perfectly fine. Other than that I see little reason for it... wouldn't it basically mean that you have no personality of your own and require the personalities of others to define yourself? It's somewhat of a sad thought...
this sums up all my thoughts on the issue

Because they think it's cool to be different and want to stay different.

I mean I do too, but it's harder to defend it when I tell people I like Sara Bereilles and Taylor Swift. For some reason people get hung up on that even though I listen to a lot of other music too.

I don't care if its popular or not. If their music (or what ever) remains good and I still like it then I'll stay on the ship. But if they become total crap, I will jump off the ship, but remain on a life raft which is their older music (which I already liked).

I usually just like whatever i like..my two favorite artists are Billie Holiday and Suicide Silence, so i like a lot of different stuff..But i agree: Slipknot syndrome comes with most anything that comes popular (i actually grew up in Iowa so i was one of the first 1,000 people who liked them lol..even though i was like five then) but i dont know. I grew up listening to Korn and Slipknot so ill always be more into that scene, no matter what else gets "popular."
Obscure bands are amazing too. Captain Squeegee & The Soap Suds for life :)

As something becomes more popular, more people know about it.

Say, there was a book you knew nothing about. Suddenly, everyone has it. You find it because all your friends have it. You read it and enjoy it.

Does that mean you love it BECAUSE it's popular? Technically, but only in a broad sense. You like it because it was your style of writing, good pacing, or whatever you find appealing.

People who are absolutely average with nothing special about them try to be different by antagonizing the conformity. If they like something, and suddenly everyone else likes it, they do not want to be seen as jumping on the bandwagon or joining in on a fad, they want to be individuals, so they stop liking it. In their own way, they are conforming by purposefully responding in kind with the mainstream.
